Dolphins Officially Set To Face off Against First-Round Bust In Week 1
It's been a productive summer for the Dolphins, who are desperately trying to return to postseason play in 2025. The team tied against the Bears in the preseason opener and then came away with a win over the Lions last weekend. We've seen some players make their case for playing time in 2025, while we've seen others seemingly play their way off the roster.
We've known for a while now that the Dolphins will kick off the 2025 season against the Colts. However, we didn't know until today who the starting quarterback for the Colts would be. A couple of former first-round picks, Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson, have been battling for the spot all summer, and the team announced on Tuesday that Jones won the job.
This is a disappointing development for the Colts, who used the No. 4 pick on Richardson in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, Richardson has failed to impress in the NFL, and now it appears his time as the starter in Indianapolis could be over.
Jones hasn't been all that better as a pro, to be fair. The former Giant and Viking has failed to sustain success and could be running out of chances if he doesn't stick in Indianapolis.
Jones played in 10 games last season and threw for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Overall, Jones has two seasons of 3,000+ passing yards and has thrown 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions in his six-year career.
This is notable for the Dolphins as Richardson is much more of a threat with his legs than Jones. Richardson had just under 500 rushing yards and six rushing scores in 11 games last season, so that would've been another aspect for the Dolphins to worry about.
This will be just the second time Jones has taken the field against the Dolphins. The first matchup was in 2023, and the Dolphins went on to win that game 31-16 as Jones threw for 119 yards.

Bears will play their starters in the final preseason game
The Bears will play their starters in the preseason finale Friday night against the Chiefs. Bears coach Ben Johnson told Kay Adams on Up & Adams that Caleb Williams and the rest of the team's healthy starters will play. 'We'll go ahead, and we'll play,' Johnson said. 'We'll see how long it is. We're going to get through a couple days here of practice, and we'll determine for how long, but we need to go through this.' Is the Anthony Richardson era officially over in Indianapolis? In a surprising move, the Colts have named Daniel Jones their Week 1 starter over the fourth-overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport called it a 'dramatic shift' for the Colts. Richardson struggled mightily in 2024 after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury during his rookie season, when he played only four games. Last year, Richardson completed just 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards, with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games. He was benched at one point before being reinserted into the starting lineup. Richardson also came under fire for tapping out of a game against the Houston Texans during a third-down play because he was fatigued. In two preseason games this year, Richardson completed nine of 14 passes for 94 yards and no touchdowns. According to IndyStar's Joel Erickson, Richardson completed 59.1% of his passes in training camp, compared to Jones' 68.8%. Jones, selected sixth overall by the New York Giants in 2019, signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts this offseason as the Indianapolis front office sought to bring in competition for Richardson. The Giants released Jones last year after he went 2-8 in 10 games. In six seasons, he has a 24-44-1 record, completing 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns and 47 interceptions. The Colts face the Miami Dolphins in their season opener on Sunday, Sept. 7. An interesting thing has happened on the way to construction of the 'House that Victor Wembanyama' built. The San Antonio Spurs' pursuit of Project Marvel, a proposal for a sports entertainment district that would include a new Spurs arena downtown, could hit a snag. The Alamo City's recently elected mayor, Gina Ortiz-Jones, isn't mincing words in opposition to the fast-tracking of a new Spurs home. Asked if it concerned her that Project Marvel not coming to fruition may cause the Spurs to leave, Ortiz-Jones didn't hold back. 'That is a decision for the Spurs to make.' The mayor, who was elected in early June in a runoff election, is ramping her opinion that the city's fellow politicians shouldn't rush to serve as a rubber stamp for a project that would require hundreds of millions of dollars from both the city and the county. Ortiz-Jones consistently cites that the numbers off of which officials are operating regarding the costs come courtesy of the Spurs. She is pushing for an independent study and more analysis. The reality of the Spurs in San Antonio Always lingering in the background, even as they've enjoyed success uncommon in professional sports over the last half decade, the realities of a small-market NBA team have never left the Spurs. It's commonly noted that had they not lucked into David Robinson in the 1987 NBA Draft, the franchise – then in the rare midst of six consecutive losing seasons – would've left San Antonio. Despite decades' worth of long playoff runs and five championships, the Spurs still found themselves as passing mentions in certain conversations whenever the topic of the NBA's desired markets surfaced. Upon Tim Duncan's retirement and Kawhi Leonard's departure, the organization has found itself in a rebuilding era. Ownership has since partnered up with businesses in Austin, and the team will play two regular-season games in Texas's capital city for a fourth straight season this year. Talk of a permanent move up I-35 dominated local chatter for a while there. Then came the right to pick Wembanyama in the summer of 2023. It's no coincidence that talk of a new arena came to light shortly after the Spurs drafted the player many see as the next face of the NBA. Housed at the Frost Bank Center since 2002, a new arena would mark the Spurs' fourth home in the Alamo City going back to Hemisfair Arena, then the Alamodome. Spurs and the new mayor It's important to note that Gina Ortiz-Jones is not publicly advocating for the Spurs to leave. 'We are so far from that. Nobody wants that, but we don't need to operate from a place of fear,' she answered when asked about a potential Spurs move. Given her other related response (above), is she throwing down a dare? Probably not. More likely, she's attempting to negotiate. Time will tell whether her strategy works. What time – and lots of it – has already told us is how important the Spurs are to the fabric of San Antonio. The new mayor isn't immune to that reality.
