BBC EastEnders legend Natalie Cassidy hits out at bosses as final scene was cut

Daily Mirror28-04-2025

Natalie Cassidy left EastEnders earlier this year after 30 years in the role of Sonia Fowler but she says show bosses decided against airing an emotional goodbye to Phil Mitchell
Soap icon Natalie Cassidy has opened up about her EastEnders exit - and she isn't satisfied by how BBC bosses handled her goodbye.
The 41-year-old, known for her long-running character Sonia Fowler, bid farewell to the show earlier this year following an impressive three-decade stint on the Square. Fans recently witnessed Sonia's dramatic Walford exit via a speedboat, complete with her trademark trumpet in tow.

But it wasn't the perfect goodbye. It appears the writers decided against showing an emotional scene between Sonia and Phil Mitchell, who bonded over the sudden death of Jamie, who died on Christmas Day in 2002 after being struck by a car driven by his rival Martin Fowler.

Speaking on her Off The Telly podcast, which the soap great hosts with Joanna Page, Natalie said the scene was axed from her on-screen exit and she wasn't happy about She said: "I felt quite emotional but d'you know what? Maybe I've missed it because I wasn't watching it properly, but I feel like they cut out the scene, which was my favourite scene.
"It was Sonia and Phil, and me and Phil just having a moment in the Square. I didn't see it. I might have to go back and have a look. I'd be really cross [if it was cut] because it was a really nice scene." Natalie added: "I've had loads of DMs and messages and stuff just saying how people have shed a tear, but a happy tear. It was nice and joyful, it wasn't sort of depressing, and [I] didn't leave in a black cab, it was just fun."
After her exit from EastEnders, Natalie shared her desire to explore "other projects" but felt it "wasn't fair" to request time off from the producers for filming. Speaking to Bella magazine, she said: "I left because I felt the time was right to do so. I was ready for a change, after 32 years.
"And EastEnders is a factory with 60 cast members and 300 staff so they can't cater for someone who says, 'By the way, I need two months off to do this, another three months off to do this'. It's not fair. It had to be a clean break so I could focus on other projects and spend time with my family, which I haven't been doing in recent months."
Post-EastEnders life has been bustling for Natalie with several new ventures. The star excitedly broke the news last month about her upcoming book, Happy Days, which is set to give readers a glimpse into her experience balancing life as a mother.
Natalie also took to the airwaves with a special segment on Virgin Radio. Chatting about her foray into radio with Joanna, Natalie replied: "It was really good. It was nerve-racking, but again, it's just another thing to tick off the list. A little bucket list of firsts, but it was good."

Huge fears for EastEnders' Linda as Phil unleashes his rage on Elaine

Linda Carter's (Kellie Bright) wellbeing is the subject of much concern in EastEnders next week as Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) clocks how stressed she is. The landlady of the Queen Vic is forced to pick up the pieces for mum Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe), who is set to make a reckless decision in the wake of her fears about George Knight (Colin Salmon). George, as viewers know, has been keeping secrets from Lainey, such as a secret kiss with his ex Sabrina and his involvement in making her love rival Cindy Beale's (Michelle Collins) opening night a success. With Elaine's head elsewhere, Linda ends up doing the lion's share of the work at The Vic, which leaves Phil incredibly concerned. As a busy night gets underway at the establishment, with Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) and Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan-Levy) among those in attendance, Elaine declares that the prosecco is on the house all night, which leaves Linda utterly reeling. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Phil pops in for a drink with Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) and it doesn't take him long to realise just how much Linda is struggling with the extra workload and therefore he offers her a helping hand. Elaine, meanwhile, offers to book Priya a singles cruise, telling her she can pay her back later. Linda witnesses £5,000 leave the business account and she's utterly horrified. Wasting little time in confronting Elaine, the Carter matriarch demands answers. Elaine, however, is completely indifferent to the situation, dismissing Linda's concerns entirely. The following day, Elaine wakes with a vicious hangover. Linda tries to talk sense into her mum, who once again shuts her down – and refuses to engage with her altogether. Phil continues to worry about Linda, who is quite clearly struggling under the pressure, and therefore he steps in and gives Elaine a piece of his mind, chastising her for treating Linda so carelessly. Left with food for thought, Elaine decides to speak to Linda, who continues to play down her true feelings. And let's just say that she is overwhelmed. More Trending Will Elaine realise that Linda can't do everything on her own? Will she come to realise the error of her ways where Priya is concerned? Linda has been Walford's resident agony aunt over the past few months, always on hand to offer helpful advice to those in need. But can she get the help she needs from those around her? EastEnders confirms arrest for Joel as he commits shocking assault

EastEnders teen Joel Marshall (Max Murray) is arrested after committing a shocking assault next week. As the BBC soap's dark incel plot gathers pace, the newcomer is questioned by police after inappropriately touching a passenger on the tube. Since arriving in Walford with his dad Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) and his partner Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) earlier this year, Joel has exhibited some disturbing behaviour. After it was revealed he had previously upskirted one of his classmates back in Australia, he recorded himself and Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) having sex without her consent. As well as making various misogynistic comments, he also encouraged friend Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to use his dad's credit card to view adult content online. Next week, the pair are on the tube home together when Joel asks Tommy to film him, unaware of his intentions. Tommy is horrified when he then witnesses Joel pretending to fall on fellow passenger, Isla, who he touches inappropriately. Upon arriving at the tube station, Isla reports Joel to the authorities, and he is swiftly apprehended. After Ross and Vicki arrive on the scene, Ross demands answers as Vicki comforts Isla and supports her decision to report Joel, hoping this might stop him doing it again. Later, Ross tries to get through to his son, who lies about what happened. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street?
