Two nabbed as police cripple drug syndicate in Penang
Timur Laut police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the suspects — a 25-year-old local man and a 20-year-old foreign woman were detained during an operation by the district's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division at about 9.30pm on July 10.
He said the team seized 15 compressed packets of dried leaves, believed to be cannabis, wrapped in transparent plastic.
'The drugs are estimated to weigh 8.2kg and are worth RM25,420. They are sufficient for approximately 16,400 doses,' he said in a statement today.
Abdul Rozak said the total value of the drugs and items confiscated during the raid is estimated at RM46,890.50.
He said initial investigations revealed the syndicate had been active since early this year and was targeting the local market.
'Preliminary urine tests showed the male suspect tested positive for benzodiazepines. He also has four previous criminal records. The female suspect tested negative and has no prior record,' he added.
Both suspects have been remanded for seven days, from July 11 to 17, to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, along with not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Abdul Rozak said police will continue to intensify efforts to curb drug-related activities and syndicates in the state.
'We will strengthen cooperation with other agencies through information sharing and a holistic approach to combat drug distribution,' he said.

"The suspects will then take the money and leave the scene. It is reported that victims only realise their money is gone after the suspects leave," he said. He said all the suspects have been remanded for four days until Aug 6 and the case is being investigated under sections 379 and 380 of the Penal Code and sections 6 and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Five foreigners arrested for tourist thefts in Penang
GEORGE TOWN: Police yesterday arrested five Middle Eastern nationals in connection with thefts targeting foreign tourists in Penang. RM300,000 worth of ganja seized by Kedah cops
JITRA: Kedah police thwarted attempts to smuggle about 93.77kg of ganja valued at RM290,600 and arrested four men in separate raids around Bukit Kayu Hitam from July 30 to Aug 2. Kedah police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah said that in the first raid, at Taman Lama Ladang Rakyat Laka Temin, Bukit Kayu Hitam on July 30, they arrested an 18-year-old and seized three black plastic packets containing 55 packages of suspected ganja weighing 57,352.85g in a bush area. "In the second raid, on July 31, we found two black plastic bags containing 35 packages of ganja weighing 36,414g near the first location. No arrests were made. "We conducted a third raid at 9pm the same day and arrested a 19-year-old in a car near a petrol station in Changlun. "The fourth raid was carried out at 5pm on Saturday (Aug 2), where we arrested two more syndicate members, aged 24 and 28, at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex,' he told reporters here on Sunday (Aug 3). The seized drugs are believed to be enough to supply over 187,000 addicts, he added.
