There's another major difference between the AI gold rush and anything that preceded it. And that's the possibility of AGI's arrival. During the Dotcom era, there was only one internet. There was no possibility that a new, better Internet could make the old one obsolete overnight. With AI however, this is a very realistic scenario. Should Artificial General Intelligence emerge in the next few years, as industry leaders increasingly suggest, we would witness disruption that dwarfs the dotcom revolution in both speed and scope. While the internet bubble taught us about hype cycles and gradual adoption, AGI's arrival would compress decades of transformation into months.
The economic shock would make the 2000 market crash seem like a minor correction. The dotcom bubble primarily affected tech stocks and speculative investments, leaving most traditional industries largely intact. AGI would simultaneously threaten every knowledge-based profession, potentially eliminating entire career paths overnight. Unlike the internet, which created new job categories as it destroyed others, AGI could replace human cognitive work entirely, offering no clear pathway for displaced workers to retrain.
The concentration risks identified from the dotcom era would become existential threats. During the internet boom, companies like AOL and Yahoo could emerge from nowhere to challenge established players. With AGI, the first organization to achieve breakthrough capabilities could establish permanent dominance. The winner-takes-all dynamics would be absolute. There's no competing with superhuman intelligence using conventional methods. Most critically, AGI eliminates the gradual adoption curve that allowed society to adapt during the internet revolution. The dotcom bubble eventually corrected, but underlying internet technology continued advancing. With AGI, there may be no second chances. The first deployment could fundamentally alter the trajectory of human civilization. Unlike the internet's democratizing potential, AGI could concentrate power so completely that traditional market corrections become impossible.
The dotcom bubble showed how quickly hype can outrun substance, and how painful the correction can be. But it also proved that real innovation survives and reshapes the world over time.
AI may follow a similar pattern, but the scale is different. The pace is faster, the concentration of power greater, and the risks more profound. The AI truly is a point of no return. Why a young Aussie has rejected a $1billion offer from Mark Zuckerberg
An Australian artificial intelligence expert has reportedly turned down a staggering billion-dollar offer from Mark Zuckerberg 's Meta. Andrew Tulloch, a University of Sydney graduate who grew up in Perth, spent more than a decade working at Facebook 's parent company before joining rival OpenAI. In February, Tulloch co-founded AI start-up Thinking Machines Lab with former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati. The company is now reportedly valued at US$12 billion (A$18.5 billion). According to the Wall Street Journal, Zuckerberg tried to buy Thinking Machines Lab earlier this year, but Murati rejected his offer. Meta's CEO then attempted to lure the company's top talent, including Tulloch. Tulloch was allegedly offered a US$1 billion (A$1.55 billion) pay package spread over six years, with the potential for even more through bonuses and stock performance. However, the Perth-born 'genius' turned the offer down. Meta later told the Journal the reported US$1 billion figure was 'inaccurate and ridiculous.' Mr Tulloch moved to the US in 2012 and spent 11 years at Facebook's AI company, where he rose to the role of distinguished engineer. Mike Vernal, a former Facebook executive who worked with Mr Tulloch, said: 'He was definitely known as an extreme genius.' In 2023, he moved to OpenAI, the research organisation behind ChatGPT, before joining former colleagues in forming Thinking Machines Lab this year. The start-up cites its mission of making 'AI systems more widely understood, customizable and generally capable'. Mr Tulloch was a vice captain at Christ Church Grammar in Claremont, Western Australia. He achieved an ATAR of 99.95 in 2007 before graduating with first class honours and the university medal in mathematics at university in 2011. He graduated with the highest GPA in the Faculty of Science. The Australian worked at Goldman Sachs as a quant while studying at the University of Cambridge. He completed a masters in mathematical statistics and machine learning before embarking on his career in AI. Zuckerberg has a history of attempting to poach rival companies' employees. OpenAI boss Sam Altman revealed in June Meta had offered US$100million bonuses ($155million) to his staff in an unsuccessful bid to convince talent to switch teams. 'I'm really happy that at least so far none of our best people have decided to take them up on that,' he said.

Bills RB James Cook on not practicing Sunday: "Business"
August 3 - With his contract dispute ongoing, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook showed up for Sunday's mandatory practice but did not participate. Instead, the 25-year-old stood off to the side and spent a short amount of time on an exercise bike. After practice, when asked why he did not participate, Cook offered just three words: "Oh, nothing. Business." Sunday marked the first time Cook did not participate since requesting a contract extension during the offseason. The two-time Pro Bowler, who shared the league lead with 16 rushing touchdowns last season, wants to become one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL. Cook also was asked whether he was holding out or planning to suit up for Monday's practice. Again, Cook kept his response short: "Business." The Bills provided no comment on Cook, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Cook -- who did not attend Buffalo's voluntary offseason team activities but did participate in the mandatory three-day minicamp as well as the first eight practices of training camp -- was not on the team's list of injured players leading up to Sunday's practice. Entering his fourth year in the league, Cook has put together back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. His 2,638 rushing yards are the most among his peers in the 2022 draft class. The Bills traded their first-round pick from that season, cornerback Kaiir Elam, to the Dallas Cowboys in March. The ultra-wealthy are ditching their second homes in London and buying up luxury properties in glamorous Miami, a new report has found. Ultra high net worth (UHNW) individuals, people with a net worth of more than $30 million, make up an exclusive group with a population of around 480,000. Members of this elite group own an average of three properties per individual, and a report from the information services firm Altrata found that Miami is the leading city for them to purchase luxury second homes. 'Miami is the most popular second-home location in the US, and globally, with a total of 13,211 UHNW second-home owners,' according to Altrata's report, Residential Real Estate 2025: Spotlight on the World's Leading Markets for the Wealthy. Notably, the Billionaire Buyers in London mid-year 2025 survey conducted by Beauchamp Estates found that over 70 percent of wealthy sellers are ditching their second homes in the UK capital and heading to cities such as Miami. Miami real estate agents told the Daily Mail they have worked with numerous international clients buying trophy homes in their city. 'We've seen some interest from London-based buyers recently, many of whom are reallocating funds from the UK market into Miami, diversifying their holdings,' said Maria Kuzina, owner of Miami Luxury Real Estate. 'London buyers currently represent, I would say, around three to five percent of all international buyers in the luxury market.' Jay Batra of the Batra Real Estate Group said: 'Miami continues to attract a diverse range of international buyers. Colombians, Brazilians, Russians, and Canadians are among the largest groups of foreign nationals investing in second homes here, drawn by the city's vibrant lifestyle and unique real estate opportunities. 'Miami Beach has historically seen 70 to 75 percent of its homes owned as second or third properties by buyers from across the US and around the globe.' He said driving factors bringing the ultra-rich to The Magic City include the warm weather, sandy beaches and low taxes. 'Miami has experienced strong growth of its wealthy second-home population over the past five years,' Altrata's report said. 'The city has long been a popular location for wealthy buyers seeking an additional residence, attracted by Florida's favorable tax regime, warm climate and coastal setting.' Kuzina said her clients are drawn to Miami because 'it strikes a perfect balance between lifestyle and investment opportunities'. 'Miami remains a top choice for international buyers due to its year-round sunshine, tax advantages, waterfront lifestyle, and its growing status as a global luxury hub,' she added. 'Today's buyers seek high-end, move-in-ready properties with privacy, premium amenities, and architectural distinction. Branded residences are particularly appealing as they offer world-class design, luxury services, and strong resale value.' Miami real estate agents told the Daily Mail they have worked with numerous international clients buying trophy homes in their city Batra explained that his international clients are looking for properties on the water with ritzy amenities. 'Condo buyers are drawn to the stunning water views, prime locations, and vibrant lifestyle that Miami and Miami Beach offer, paired with the convenience of being steps from the beach,' he said. Miami at been at the epicenter of a condo crisis after the 2021 collapse of a condo building in Surfside led to a new law that requires condo buildings to undergo structural inspections and shore up reserves. This has meant that many HOAs have been hiking fees and doling out hefty special assessments to comply with the new rules, which has reduced demand for condos. 'In Brickell, the allure lies in luxurious high-rises with breathtaking views and top-tier amenities like pools, gyms, and more - all within close proximity to workplaces.' He added that buyers searching for houses rather than condos tend to look for properties with a type of longevity. 'For those searching for houses, priorities shift to spacious yards, waterfront properties, private pools, and a sense of privacy. Buyers also focus on neighborhoods with strong potential for long-term value and appreciation,' Batra said. 'Additionally, flexibility is key; they often seek homes that can be easily rented out for a few months to a year if needed.' Batra admitted that some buyers are wary of Florida's turbulent housing market due to soaring HOA fees, skyrocketing insurance costs, and in some cases, hefty special assessments imposed by homeowners' associations. 'Buyers, both local and international, are increasingly concerned about rising costs. High insurance premiums and common charges are climbing across the board, adding to the burden already posed by elevated interest rates,' Batra said. 'These combined expenses are making it more challenging to purchase and maintain homes.' He noted that some of his clients have opted to purchase their homes in all-cash to escape these burdens. 'However, I've observed a growing trend among cash buyers, who are stepping in to offset these monthly costs,' he said. 'In fact, the most recent transaction involved an all-cash buyer, reflecting the strong demand in this segment.'
