Peacemaker: James Gunn Teases John Cena vs. Batman in DCU
James Gunn wants to see John Cena's fight Batman in the DCU.
Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU officially kicked off last December with the animated Creature Commandos series. Gunn's Superman movie is now being released in United States theaters next month before Peacemaker Season 2, which is part of the new shared DC universe, arrives in August 2025.
At CCXPMX 25 this past weekend, per ComicBookMovie, Cena and Gunn were both asked who they'd like to see Cena's Christopher Smith character fight at some point in the DCU.
While Cena didn't have an answer, Gunn said that he wants Peacemaker to fight Batman at some point.
At this time, it's not clear who will be playing the Dark Knight in the DCU, as no official casting announcement has been made. A Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold is currently in the works and is being directed by The Flash's Andy Muschietti, though there haven't been a lot of substantial announcements since that project in some time.
Peacemaker Season 2, meanwhile, premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. The season will have eight episodes in total.
'The new season follows Christopher 'Chris' Smith, aka Peacemaker, the vigilante Super Hero as he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost,' the official logline reads.
Along with Cena, the cast of Peacemaker Season 2 includes Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sol Rodríguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury, Michael Rooker as Red St. Wild, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Filion as Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord.

Russell Simmons Sues HBO for $20 Million Over ‘On the Record' Documentary
Russell Simmons is suing HBO and the filmmakers behind the 'On the Record' documentary for $20 million, alleging they defamed him and ignored evidence that supported his version of events. The documentary, by Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick, centered on sexual assault and misconduct allegations against the hip-hop mogul from numerous women. It was distributed by HBO Max in 2020. More from Variety Elijah Wood, Moses Ingram, Lauren Holt, Josh Brener Join Rachel Sennott's HBO Comedy Series 'Mountainhead' Stars Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith Unpack Their Twisted Tech Bromance and Comparisons to Musk, Zuckerberg and 'Succession' Everything We Know About HBO's 'Harry Potter' Series Simmons' lawyer, Imran Ansari, filed a summons in civil court in Manhattan on Tuesday, alleging that the filmmakers 'disregard and/or suppressed' information provided by Simmons' representatives. 'Despite voluminous support for Mr. Simmons in the form of credible information, persuasive evidence, witness statements, and calls for further investigation by notable members of the media, politics, and the civil rights movement, the defendants simply disregarded it, and released, and continue to re-release globally, a film that tremendously disparaged and damaged Mr. Simmons with salacious and defamatory accusations that he vehemently denies,' Ansari and co-counsel Carla DiMare said in a written statement. The statute of limitations for defamation actions in New York is one year from the date of first publication. To prevail, Simmons will have to show that HBO is liable for more recent 'republication' in international markets. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, and was initially intended for Apple TV+ as part of Oprah Winfrey's deal with the streamer. However, Winfrey withdrew from the project, and the film ended up at HBO Max. According to the filing, Simmons' representatives lobbied HBO leaders at the time, including Casey Bloys and WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey, to no avail. 'Defendants were requested to review this evidence and information by multiple luminaries in media and politics, including but not limited to, civil rights leaders and members of Congress, and other high-profile black leaders; and board members within the Defendant corporation(s) itself,' the filing states. The filing seeks 'immediate removal' of the documentary from HBO's platforms, as well as at least $20 million in damages. Simmons has faced several sexual misconduct lawsuits, including from some of those who appeared in the documentary. In November 2023, he reached a confidential settlement with Sil Lai Abrams, who was among those interviewed, for $1,265,000, according to a court filing last year. In all, more than 20 women have accused him of sexual assault. Ansari is a partner at Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, the New York law firm currently representing Harvey Weinstein in his criminal retrial. Netflix has officially revealed the episode titles for The Sandman Season 2, which is its final season, and in a surprise twist, announced a bonus episode is on the way. Season 2 will arrive in two volumes: Volume 1 premieres July 3 with six episodes, followed by Volume 2 on July 24, which brings five more. But that's not all. Netflix will also drop a surprise twelfth episode, described as a bonus chapter, coming on July 31. The episode titles for the upcoming season are as rich and ominous as fans might hope. They are: 'Season of Mists' 'The Ruler of Hell' 'More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold' 'Brief Lives' 'The Sons of Orpheus' 'Family Blood' 'Time and Night' 'Fuel for the Fire' 'The Kindly Ones' 'Long Live the King' 'A Tale of Graceful Ends' 'Death: The High Cost of Living' Each title was accompanied by a first-look image, teasing familiar faces along with strange new ones. This final season is shaping up to be a visually rich and emotionally heavy run. The upcoming season will adapt several pivotal stories from Neil Gaiman's iconic comic, including 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Song of Orpheus.' In the next season: 'After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. 'To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. 'Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of The Sandman will tell Dream's story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.' Returning to the dreamscape are the Endless: Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Despair (Donna Preston), and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles). They'll be joined by new additions like Ruairi O'Connor as Orpheus, Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, and Laurence O'Fuarain as Thor a family of characters who are anything but ordinary. The Sandman comes from showrunner Allan Heinberg, who says he had already planned that the second season to be it's last before it was filmed in the summer of 2023. Netflix didn't confirm the end of the show until January of this year, around the same time of the sexual misconduct accusations made against The Sandman graphic novel author and series executive producer Neil Gaiman. The Sandman Season 2 Volume 1 hits Netflix on July 3. Volume 2 follows on July 24, and the surprise finale arrives July 31.
