Animal Husbandry Department felicitates outstanding employees with Independence Day awards

The Animal Husbandry Department honoured 67 employees for their exceptional services, during a State-level felicitation ceremony held at the directorate office, Vet Home, Vijayawada, on Wednesday (August 20). The event, organised in connection with the 79th Independence Day celebrations, was presided over by Director of Animal Husbandry T. Damodara Naidu. Dr. Naidu stressed the importance of ensuring that government schemes reach even the remotest parts of the State. He called upon employees to work in line with the government's vision and contribute to the 'Swarna Andhra 2047' goals. He emphasised the need for Andhra Pradesh to maintain its leadership in milk, egg and meat production across the country. He noted that the awards were instituted to motivate employees to render distinguished services in advancing animal husbandry and supporting farmers' livelihoods. Those felicitated included a Joint Director, three district animal husbandry officers, five deputy directors, seven assistant directors, eight veterinary assistant surgeons, one statistician, eight office staff, 12 para-veterinary workers, four livestock assistants, four disease diagnostic lab staff and three Gopala Mitras. Green Mission links India's heritage with future

Moodbidri: Marking India's 79th Independence Day celebrated recently with a message rooted in heritage and sustainability, the Oppiko Pachchevanasiri Abhiyan (Accept the Greenery Movement) organized a mass distribution of 6,241 saplings, seeds, and buds across select districts. The initiative, led jointly by Swasti Sri Bhattaraka Charukeerthi Jain Math, Alva's Education Foundation, and the Oriental Research Centre, Udupi, underscored the fusion of cultural tradition and ecological responsibility. Seventy-nine participants also took 'green pledges,' symbolising a long-term commitment to nurturing trees. Among the saplings were fruit-bearing trees and the endangered Talipot Palm (Corypha umbraculifera) — once central to India's civilizational legacy as palm leaves preserved Vedas, Upanishads, and epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Swasti Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka and Managing Trustee of Alva's Education Foundation, Vivek Alva emphasised that protecting biodiversity and reviving rainforests is a sacred duty aligned with national values of sustainability. Professor S.A. Krishnaiah, campaign founder, revealed that under the Green India Vision Ecological Studies (GIVES) initiative, over 1.3 lakh seeds and saplings have already been distributed, with plans to expand globally. This year's celebration also unveiled 'Bio-Trove,' a unique seed-collection model enabling steady replantation. Nearly 1,100 seeds were pooled and redistributed on Independence Day. Inspired by a 12th-century Jain inscription at Hirebevinur, the movement has grown into a national mission, blending India's ancient eco-wisdom with a modern vision of sustainable living.

Waste at Lalbagh flower show drops sharply

BENGALURU: Bengaluru's plogging volunteers and the Horticulture Department reported a sharp decline in litter during the 12-day Independence Day flower show at Lalbagh Botanical Garden that concluded on Monday, which saw a footfall of around 6.24 lakh visitors. Members of the Indian Ploggers Army, who combine jogging with picking up litter, reported that during the peak days of the show, August 15 to 17, they collected only about four sacks of dry waste per day, weighing roughly 6 to 8 kg each. In total, 12 to 13 sacks were gathered over three days. This is a sharp decline compared to earlier editions, when ploggers routinely picked up 16 to 20 sacks a day within a one square kilometre radius of the main exhibition area. Even in the January show, the group collected 10 sacks in a single day. 'I personally think that more and more citizens need to embrace 'Bring Your Own Cutlery' and carry their basic kit to avoid single-use disposables. Organisers should also opt for cutlery rentals when they anticipate huge footfalls,' said Plog Raja of the Indian Ploggers Army. M Jagadeesh, Joint Director of Horticulture (Parks and Gardens), told TNIE, 'We have collected one compactor truck of flowers, and another will be collected once the displays are removed. Dry waste such totaled about four compactor trucks. Last year, it was two trucks of flowers and six of dry waste, and this is a drastic decline.' He said visitors were informed in advance that no plastic will be allowed. Over the past four editions, the department has switched from areca plates to rented steel plates to serve food to 650 to 700 police personnel and staff, further reducing waste. 'The public has shown a behavioural change which was the main contributor to this decline,' he said.
