AP partners with WEF for energy centre in Amaravati
Vijayawada: In a significant move to establish Andhra Pradesh as a global hub for innovation and sustainable development, the state government partnered with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to launch 'WEF-AP Centre for Energy and Cyber Resilience' in Amaravati. This initiative aligns with the government's ambitious 'Swarna Andhra Vision 2047'.
A Government Order issued on Thursday formalized the establishment of this centre, which will operate under the WEF's global Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) Network. Notably, it will be India's first thematic C4IR centre and will focus on two critical areas: energy transition and green industries in collaboration with WEF's Centre for Energy and Materials (CENMAT) and AI-led digital transformation and cyber security, in partnership with WEF's Centre for Cyber Security.
This initiative stems from high-level meetings with the WEF in Davos and is poised to position Amaravati as India's leading center for green energy, sustainability, and cyber security.
The project is being spearheaded by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, with the overarching goal of enhancing AP's international profile and attracting significant investments in clean energy, Artificial Intelligence, and digital infrastructure.
The centre's key objectives include elevating AP's global standing, fostering international partnerships, supporting the growth of green industries, enhancing cyber security capabilities, and running pilot projects in clean energy, smart grids, and the application of AI in sectors such as agriculture and governance. Furthermore, it aims at upskilling the workforce in cyber security and emerging technologies and connecting the state with prominent global platforms like the WEF's annual meeting at Davos.
The state government has allocated Rs 36 crore to support the Centre's operations for three years. It will initially function from Vijayawada or Amaravati and will be governed by a high-level committee chaired by IT Minister Nara Lokesh.

Uttar Pradesh fares better in buying fodder for stray cattle than wheat for PDS
Uttar Pradesh has procured more cattle fodder than wheat in terms of target achievement (in percentages ) this year, despite the state requiring over 70 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of wheat annually to meet its public distribution system (PDS) needs, reflecting changing rural priorities and marketing dynamics. According to official data, the state government fixed a minimum target of procuring 60 lakh MT of wheat at the minimum support price (MSP) of ₹2425 per quintal from farmers this marketing season. Despite widespread publicity and procurement drives, it managed to purchase just a little over 10 lakh MT — achieving only about 17% of its target. The government began the wheat procurement for 2025 on April 1 through 5853 purchase centres across the state. The procurement season will end officially on Sunday. Officials attribute the poor procurement to higher prices being offered in the open market. 'Farmers are increasingly preferring private buyers who offer rates above the MSP and added conveniences like timely pickup, cash payment and transport assistance,' said a senior food and civil supplies official. 'The persistent low procurement trend has been observed over the last few years, with global disruptions such as the Russia-Ukraine war also impacting grain trade flows and pricing,' he added. This shortfall is likely to force the Centre to step in and fill the deficit by diverting wheat stocks from Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns in other states, which is bound to increase the transportation cost significantly. In contrast, the state has fared far better in buying bhoosa — the dry wheat chaff or straw used as fodder for bovines. The government collected over 8 lakh MT of bhoosa this year, primarily for feeding stray cattle housed in more than 7,000 gaushalas (cow shelters) across Uttar Pradesh, and this collection stands at about 90% of the target. These shelters accommodate nearly 13 lakh animals, mostly abandoned or unproductive cattle, with fodder expenses forming a substantial part of the state's animal care budget. The department of animal husbandry fixed the target of collecting around 9 lakh MT bhoosa for stray cattle through a drive between April 15 and May 31. Of it, 26,62,198.16 quintal was sought to be collected through donations while the rest 62,11,795.72 quintal was to be purchased by the government from farmers at the rate of ₹850 per quintal. The stark contrast between the two figures — 90.55% of bhoosa procured versus just 17% of wheat — underscores the growing challenge in securing foodgrains for the PDS through MSP operations, even as the state remains committed to cow protection policies. Experts warn that unless procurement becomes more farmer-friendly or MSPs are revised to match real-time market prices, states like UP will continue to struggle with meeting their foodgrain buffer needs through local sourcing. Principal secretary, food and civil supplies, Ranvir Prasad said the objective of the MSP was to ensure that no farmer had to sell his produce below the threshold price fixed by the government. 'Despite our best efforts, many farmers preferred their wheat to private players since they offered a better price to them and the government has no issue with farmers getting a better price than the MSP in the open market,' he said.

A 500-kilowatt solar project is being installed to power the Delhi Assembly, which is on track to become the first in India to run completely on renewable energy. The plans are also in place to upgrade the assembly's infrastructure, including the renovation of the House before the Monsoon Session, the creation of a modern e-library and the transformation of the historic assembly premises into a cultural and heritage site. "This was once the site of India's first Parliament. We now plan to establish a legislative museum, guided tours and interactive exhibits with help from the IGNCA and the National Archives," said Gupta. The chief minister highlighted the ecological and governance benefits of the project. "One tonne of recycled paper saves 17 trees. With this step, the Delhi Assembly is moving towards sustainability and efficiency. The e-Vidhan project marks a significant leap towards strengthening transparency, efficiency and environmental responsibility," said Gupta. She also pointed out the contrast with the previous government's resistance to central reforms. "Under the BJP's administration, a new reform is introduced every day. First the solar system and now a paperless assembly," she added. Bisht on his part hailed the project as a decisive step in transforming the Delhi Assembly into a "technologically empowered and transparent institution". Union Minister Khattar reviews progress of Fatehabad nuclear power project
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday reviewed the progress of the nuclear power project being implemented by NPCIL under the Department of Atomic Energy in Haryana's Fatehabad district. Khattar, along with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, visited the Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) and reviewed the progress of North India's first nuclear power plant. The minister said projects like GHAVP will play a vital role in helping India achieve its net zero emission target by 2070. "This project is a visionary step towards making India a leader in the field of nuclear energy technology and ensuring energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Khattar said. Speaking to the media later, Khattar said that unit one and two are now expected to be operational by 2031. "By 2031, two power units will become operational and in 2032, two more power plants will become operational. These four units will produce 2,800 MW power, out of which Haryana will get 50 per cent of the power and 50 per cent will go to the central pool so that it can be used wherever needed," Khattar said. Khattar said, "In January 2014, the project was given clearance. Generally, the time period given for setting up nuclear power plants is thirteen to thirteen-and-a-half years, but I was told that there have been some reasons for delay, which include technical and administrative reasons". Asked about his recent statement that the government is working on a framework to standardise the default temperatures of air conditioners in the range of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. He said many feel consumers will benefit from the move and it will also result in power saving and uninterrupted and reliable power supply. Saving power is necessary. Last year's peak power demand was 250 gigawatt and we have touched 242 gigawatt till June 13. Meanwhile, Khattar was apprised by the officials of NPCIL's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Nearly Rs 80 crore has been spent on community development activities like the construction of roads, and schools, provision of medical vans, and development of an astro turf hockey ground, an official statement said. "Atom on Wheels" mobile exhibition van was highlighted as a key outreach initiative to educate and engage the public on nuclear energy and safety. Meanwhile, according to a Haryana government statement, Chief Minister Saini reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction works at the project site and directed the officers to complete all works as per the prescribed standards at the earliest. Saini emphasized that nuclear energy is a better source of power generation from an environmental point of view. According to the statement, in the review meeting, Jivendra Kumar Jain, Project Director of NPCIL, gave a detailed presentation about the project. The statement said that during the meeting Union Minister Khattar stated that this ambitious project will not only fulfill the long-term energy needs of Haryana but also benefit the entire northern region of the country. During the review meeting, the Union Minister received detailed information about the ongoing construction works and instructed officers to ensure timely completion in accordance with established safety standards. He emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about nuclear safety, so that there are no misconceptions among the general public. He directed officers to engage with residents in nearby areas and inform them about the safety measures in place. Highlighting the advantages of nuclear energy, Khattar said nuclear power plants are more cost-effective in the long-run and have minimal environmental impact compared to other energy sources. Khattar instructed the officials concerned that over 20,000 saplings be planted within the nuclear plant premises during the upcoming monsoon season to promote environmental sustainability. According to the statement, the Union Minister stated that all states have been urged to explore the feasibility of setting up nuclear plants and to ensure that at least one nuclear power plant is established wherever possible. He also emphasized the need to expand existing nuclear facilities to meet future energy demands. Khattar stressed that to achieve better outcomes; the construction of the Fatehabad project should be expedited. He added that any challenges encountered during the process should be promptly communicated to both the Central and State governments for resolution. After the meeting, Khattar and Saini visited the project site and inspected the ongoing construction work. The Chief Minister directed officers to not only focus on completing the current phase of construction but also to prepare a roadmap for the timely commencement and completion of the second phase of the project.
