Tripura CM Manik Saha bats for better implementation of new criminal laws, hopes it will push up conviction rate
'We have seen that these are friendly Acts. To implement criminal laws, the stakeholders are required to work in coordination and benefit the common people. I urge you all to cooperate with each other,' CM Saha said while addressing a workshop on 'New Criminal Laws and NDPS Act' held for legal practitioners, the police, and administrative officers at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala.
'I think this workshop is a step in this direction. Awareness is very important. People don't know about that. But every person should know these laws, and for this, I think, awareness campaigns should be done vigorously,' he added.
'These laws reflect a victim-friendly, technology-driven, and time-bound approach to justice delivery… The FIR (First Information Report) can be filed from anywhere, any part of the country, or across the state without being physically present in the police station and irrespective of the jurisdiction. The victims are entitled to have a free copy of their FIRs. Victims are to be informed about the status of their cases every 90 days…' said CM Saha.

NAVI MUMBAI: A late-night joyride along the scenic Palm Beach Road nearly ended in tragedy for two young men when their Mercedes-Benz lost control and overturned in the early hours of Monday, leaving one of them critically injured. 'They were heading toward Vashi for a drive when the vehicle hit a slippery patch. Salman lost control of the steering, crashed through the divider, and the car somersaulted into the opposite lane toward Belapur,' said senior inspector Brahma Naikwadi of Nerul police station. The speed limit on Palm Beach Road is 60 kmph — making the estimated speed of the vehicle three times the legal limit. The luxury sedan landed mangled on its side, its roof crushed and windscreen shattered. The force of the crash left Sufiyan severely injured, while Salman miraculously escaped with minor injuries. A passer-by, alerted by the screech and crash, called the police control room on 112. Emergency services rushed Sufiyan to Apollo Hospital in Nerul, where he is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Salman was treated for superficial wounds at the same hospital. 'The car was a complete wreck. Fortunately, no other vehicle or pedestrian was involved, but a portion of the road divider and street infrastructure was damaged,' the officer added. The Nerul police have registered a case against Salman under section 281 (rash driving), sections 125(a)(b) and 120(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police are also investigating whether the vehicle's speed was corroborated by CCTV or GPS telemetry.

7 of snatching gang held in Rohini, stolen phones recovered
New Delhi: A gang of snatchers operating in Delhi's Rohini and adjoining areas was busted with the arrest of seven people, including receivers and mediators of stolen items, police said on Monday. The police added that 26 robbed mobile phones, a stolen motorcycle used in crimes, a dismantled two-wheeler, and a laptop used to reprogram devices were recovered from the accused. The breakthrough came following a snatching incident reported on July 10 nearC Bakery in Rohini Sector 6-7, where a woman was targeted by two motorcycle-borne assailants. A case under relevant sections of the BNS was registered, an official said. Two suspects including Pawan alias Lalla (25) and Abhitesh Gautam alias Cheedi (18), both from Karawal Nagar, were arrested. Subsequently, based on their interrogation, a mediator, Hemant alias Hemu (18), was also held, he said. The gang sourced stolen bikes through Vitul (24), who is previously involved in theft cases, and committed snatchings with Diwakar Sharma alias Paltu (25), previously booked for robbery and attempt to murder, he added. The stolen phones were funneled through Hemant to a receiver network. Those subsequently arrested were Atul (19), Vitul's brother, and Babar Malik (34), a phone shop owner in Baghpat, UP. Four iPhones and a laptop used to tamper with IMEIs were recovered. Seventeen cases have been worked out so far. Further probe is underway, the police said.

'Attacked With Chilli Powder And Machete': Tamil Nadu Techie Killed By Girlfriend's Brother

The main accused, 24-year-old Surjit, has been detained, said officials, adding that further investigation into the matter is underway. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, had reportedly gone to a Siddha clinic in Tirunelveli town on Sunday evening to meet his former schoolmate and suspected girlfriend, S Subhashini, regarding treatment for his ailing grandfather. Subhashini is a practitioner at the clinic. According to police, an argument broke out between Ganesh and Surjit, Subhashini's brother, outside the clinic. Surjit allegedly attacked Ganesh with a sickle. His body was later recovered about 200 metres from the clinic. The post-mortem was conducted at the Tirunelveli government hospital. Subhashini's family is from the Maravar community, a dominant caste group in southern Tamil Nadu, while Ganesh belonged to the Devendra Kula Vellalar, a Dalit sub-caste. Police said the woman's family had objected to their relationship.
