Chandrababu Naidu promises steps to improve the lot of fishermen in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has said the coalition government in the State will take steps for early completion of the construction of 11 ongoing fishing harbours in various parts of the State to provide livelihood opportunities for the fishermen community.
Mr. Naidu was speaking after launching the Matsyakara Bharosa scheme at Budagatlapalem village of Etcherla mandal in Srikakulam district on Saturday.
Under the scheme, a financial assistance of ₹20,000 is provided to each eligible fisherman family during the period of fishing holiday enforced between April and June annually.
Interacting with the fishermen community on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the Budagatlapalem harbor and Mulapeta seaport in Palasa Assembly constituency would be completed in one year.
Mr. Naidu said ₹258 crore had been deposited in the bank accounts of the eligible families in spite of the financial constraints being faced by the government.
'It is only the TDP government that is taking special care of the fishermen community as it has understood its financial struggle during the fishing holiday period,' he said.
Apart from the ₹20,000 financial assistance, the government was planning to support the fishermen by offering them concession on diesel required for boats and purchase of nets and other equipment. he said.
Additional income sources
'We will also ensure that fishermen have additional income sources by establishing seaweed cultivation centres near the sea coasts,' Mr. Naidu said.
Mr. Naidu observed that optimum utilisation of marine wealth would improve the per capita income of the fishermen families in the State.
He said around 555 fishermen villages existed close to the sea coast in Andhra Pradesh and their incomes would rise with the construction of the fishing harbours, including one at Budagatlapalem.
Skilling centre
The Chief Minister said a skill development centre would be established in Etcherla constituency to impart training to the youngsters from the fishermen and other communities so that they would land jobs in industries such as pharmaceutical companies located in the constituency.
He criticised the previous YSRCP government for imposing a debt burden of ₹10 lakh crore on the State without any development agenda. He said social security pensions worth ₹33,000 crore were being extended to various sections in spite of the financial hurdles.
Kovvada issue
Speaking on the occasion, District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar explained about the initiatives taken for the benefit of the fishermen community.
He referred to the R&R package for the families of Dharmavaram that were displaced due to the land acquisition for the construction of the nuclear power project at Kovvada of Ranasthalam mandal.
Responding to the issue, the Chief Minister assured to take up their grievances with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu, Andhra Pradesh Ministers of MSME and Agriculture K. Srinivas and K. Atchannaidu, Vizianagaram MP K. Appalanaidu, and Etcherla MLA N. Eswara Rao were present.

Andhra Pradesh's Class 10 results triggered a controversy, with the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) blaming Education Minister Nara Lokesh for large-scale mistakes in paper evaluations. The party is demanding his resignation, saying thousands of students were unfairly marked and their futures put at YSRCP Student Wing submitted a complaint to the School Education Commissioner in Mangalagiri, accusing the government of rushing the evaluation process and forcing teachers to check papers in just seven days. MLA emphasises govt.'s commitment to green development
Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Sudheer Reddy on Thursday said that the State government's is committed to ensure development with minimal carbon foot print. At a programme organised by the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) commemorating World Environment Day at Renigunta, The MLA underscored the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment. 'The World Environment Day is not just symbolic, but a call for action to individuals, communities and governments to take sustainable steps for the future.' Mr. Reddy also highlighted the various green initiatives taken up by the TDP-led government under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He recalled the significance of the NTR Green Vision project, which aimed to increase forest cover across Andhra Pradesh through large-scale tree plantations involving public participation, particularly students. Further, the MLA noted that the TDP government, during its earlier stint in 2014-19, had made Andhra Pradesh a frontrunner in renewable energy by establishing massive solar and wind power projects, especially in districts like Anantapur and Kurnool, and set ambitious targets to generate over 10,000 megawatts of clean energy. Waste-to-energy projects were also launched through a government order in 2017, to manage municipal waste scientifically and sustainably. The event was marked by the participation of several dignitaries including TUDA Chairman Dollars Divakar Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Greening and Beautification Corporation Chairperson Mannuru Sugunamma and Tirupati Municipal Corporation Commissioner N. CM Naidu, Pawan Kalyan launch one crore plantation in a day programme
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan launched 'Vana Mahotsav' to plant one crore saplings across the state on World Environment Day on Thursday. They, along with Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, planted the saplings at ADCL Park in the state capital, Amaravati. The leaders visited the stalls arranged by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) on environmental protection. PCB Chairman Krishnaiah explained to the Chief Minister the steps being taken for plastic recycling. The Chief Minister directed officials to formulate a special policy on recycling. He asked them to give him a report on this every 15 days. Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu, in his post on 'X' said that nature is not the property of anyone. "Everyone is responsible for protecting the environment. It is our duty to protect forests and water resources. That is why the government has taken up a large-scale tree planting programme. On the occasion of World Environment Day, today, we are requesting everyone to participate in the programme of planting one crore trees in one day," CM Naidu said. "This year, the theme of World Environment Day is plastic pollution eradication. Let us do our part to reduce plastic pollution. Let us take a pledge to protect the environment," he added. Pawan Kalyan, who is also the Minister for Forest and Environment, stated that a clean and healthy environment is the greatest gift we can offer future generations. "Let us act responsibly and take up the duty of environmental protection. Let's plant saplings, prevent water pollution, and work towards the conservation of wildlife," Pawan Kalyan said. Meanwhile, the Forest Department said that Andhra Pradesh currently has 29 per cent land under green (tree) cover. The state government has set a target of increasing this to 50 per cent by 2047 by greening various types of land available with the farmers, the Revenue Department, institutional lands, lands along roadside, railway lines and canals. Out of the total geographical area of 1,62,923 square kilometres in the state, 48,978 square kilometres has green cover. Green cover is planned over an additional area of 32,483 square kilometres. According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, this year World Environment Day is being celebrated with two themes - 'Vana Mahotsav' programme and 'End plastic pollution' to achieve the goal of a 'Swachh Andhra Pradesh'. A record one crore seedlings will be planted by various departments and other stakeholders across the state in a single day on Thursday. During the 2025 planting season, the Forest Department, Rural Development, Pollution Control Board, Horticulture Departments and others have set a target of planting 5.58 crore saplings over approximately 1.8 lakh hectares in all districts across the state.
