MGNREGA: 19 lakh man-days approved for Karnataka's Mandya district
The official shared the details of MGNREGA works during a meeting chaired by Minister in charge of Mandya N. Cheluvarayaswamy in the district.
Earlier, referring to the MGNREGA, the Minister said that although the rule mandates 100 days of employment, wages are released only for the number of man-days sanctioned by the Centre. 'If work is allotted for 100 days but funds are not released for wage payments, it will create problems in the future. This issue will be discussed with the Panchayat Raj Minister and officials concerned before arriving at a solution,' he added.
The Minister directed officials to identify taluks with high and low demand for MGNREGA work and make necessary adjustments for its smooth implementation. Priority should be given to labourers, he stressed, while issuing strict instructions to stop the practice of allotting MGNREGA works to contractors.
On the issue of providing loans to agricultural labourers, Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said banks should sanction up to ₹2 lakh without collateral. If details of individuals are provided, it will be easier to negotiate with banks, he noted, while assuring that a separate meeting will be convened to address bank-related issues.
Deputy Commissioner Kumar said that under Mandya city limits alone, over 2,000 poor families were without house sites, and about 35 acres of land was required. Since such an amount of land is unavailable within the city limits, a proposal has been sent to the government to treat land located 10 km outside the city (falling under gram panchayat limits) as a special case to provide sites, he added.
Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi, district-level officials, and representatives of various organisations were present.

SC to hear Jharkhand DGP appointment row on Monday
The Supreme Court is slated to hear on Monday a clutch of petitions challenging the appointment of Anurag Gupta as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand. As per the causelist published on the website of the apex court, a Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai and Justices K. Vinod Chandran and N.V. Anjaria will also take a plea seeking contempt action against Jharkhand Chief Secretary for "wilfully and deliberately disobeying" the guidelines laid down in the Prakash Singh vs Union of India case. According to the judgment, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is required to shortlist three eligible IPS officers with clean service records and sufficient residual service from a list submitted by the state. The state government must then appoint one of the shortlisted officers as the DGP, who must be given a minimum tenure of two years. As per the plea, the Jharkhand government has appointed Gupta without following the due process, as his name was not on the UPSC-recommended list. Additionally, it introduced a new rule to appoint Gupta, who was set to retire on April 30, 2025 and granted him an extension until April 2026. "These newly formulated rules are in blatant violation of the mandate laid down by this Hon'ble Court in the Prakash Singh judgment and subsequent orders. The state government has wilfully and deliberately eliminated the requirement for empanelment by the UPSC, a cornerstone of transparency and merit-based appointments, and replaced it with a state-controlled selection committee,' stated the petition filed through advocate Vivya Nagpal. In a letter to the state government, the Union Home Ministry said that Gupta, having turned 60 in April 2025, stands retired under the All India Services (AIS) rules and cannot continue in service. In July 2024, the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government had removed then DGP Ajay Kumar Singh before the completion of his two-year tenure. Ajay Kumar Singh was appointed DGP on February 14, 2023, and was due to serve until February 2025, but was removed prematurely.

Digital trail under scanner after Dharmavaram man's arrest for extremist links, says SP
Confirming Saturday's arrest in Dharmavaram town of Sri Sathya Sai district, Superintendent of Police V. Ratna on Sunday (August 17) briefed the media here, attesting that 42-year-old Kotwal Noor Mohammad, residing in the town for 15 years, was actively connected to the Pakistan-backed social media groups, circulating jihadi propaganda. The SP, along with Deputy SP (Dharmavaram) U. Narasingappa, disclosed that Noor Mohammad was initially thought to be a passive member, but he turned out to be an active participant in discussions intended to glorify extremist ideology. She said that the police seized the accused's mobile phone and some literature linked to the jihadi campaign in Saturday's predawn raid. 'This Dharmavaram incident is a clear proof as to how social media platforms are being mishandled and misused to negatively impact youth and gullible minds at the local level by the terrorist groups,' the SP said. Although Noor Mohammad was held on Saturday (August 16), the real investigation 'has begun now,' Ms. Ratna said, adding that the seized mobile had been sent to forensic laboratories to unravel his 'digital footprint' to map his network. She did not rule out the possibility that the accused might have acted as a recruiter or sympathiser beyond the Sri Sathya Sai district. The SP said that the case was booked under the stringent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Immediately after the arrest, Noor Mohammad was produced before the Kadiri court in the district and was shifted to the Kadapa Central Prison on a 14-day remand. 'We are waiting for the forensic revelations which will expose the depth of his involvement in the cross-border terrorism activities,' the SP said.
