BJP MP Seeks Bharat Ratna For Poet Bhikhari Thakur Ahead of Bihar Polls

NDTV3 days ago
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding that Bhikhari Thakur, the legendary Bhojpuri poet, playwright, singer, and social reformer, be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
The timing of the demand, just ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, has drawn political attention. Bhikhari Thakur, often hailed as the "Shakespeare of Bhojpuri," holds deep cultural resonance in Bihar, particularly among Bhojpuri-speaking voters in the state's northern and central districts.
In his letter dated July 16, Tiwari described Thakur as a visionary who used theatre, music, and literature to highlight pressing social issues like child marriage, caste discrimination, gender inequality, alcoholism, and migration.
"Bhikhari Thakur gave the Bhojpuri language a strong cultural identity and transformed folk art into a powerful medium for social awareness," Tiwari wrote. He referred to Thakur's iconic works such as Bidesiya, Beti Bechwa, and Gabar Ghichor, which continue to be performed in villages and towns across Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Born in 1887 in Chhapra district of Bihar, Thakur came from a barber family and had little formal education. Despite that, he built a travelling theatre company that brought socially charged performances to rural audiences. His plays were not just entertainment; they were critiques of deeply entrenched social norms.
While Tiwari's letter emphasizes Thakur's cultural contributions, the political context is hard to ignore. The BJP has been working to consolidate support among Bhojpuri-speaking voters, and invoking Bhikhari Thakur's legacy could strike a chord with this demographic. Tiwari himself is a well-known Bhojpuri performer-turned-politican and has used cultural messaging effectively in the past.
"The Bharat Ratna for Bhikhari Thakur would be a moment of pride not just for the Bhojpuri community, but for Indian folk tradition as a whole," the letter says, adding that such a recognition would reinforce the message of unity in diversity.
There has been no official response from the Home Ministry or the Prime Minister's Office. It remains unclear whether the demand will be considered ahead of the polls.
Meanwhile, Bhojpuri cultural organisations have welcomed the move, saying Thakur's contributions have long been overlooked at the national level. "It's a long-pending demand. Bhikhari Thakur deserves recognition for giving voice to the voiceless through his art," a member of the Bhikhari Thakur Natya Kala Parishad said.
Whether or not the government acts on Tiwari's request, the letter has placed Bhikhari Thakur's legacy and Bhojpuri cultural pride, back in the political conversation ahead of a crucial election.

Nuns' arrest: BJP Kerala chief rejects Chhattisgarh CM's conversion allegations

Chandrasekhar said the party state general secretary, Anoop Antony, is already in Chhattisgarh to coordinate things and clarify the matter with the authorities there, and he himself would go there if needed. BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar categorically made it clear that his party would make all possible attempts to release the nuns from jail and bring them back home safe. Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) A day after Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai justified police action against two Keralite Catholic nuns in that state, the BJP in Kerala on Tuesday virtually rejected his statements, saying that they were not involved in any human trafficking or forced conversion attempts. Meanwhile, a delegation of Congress-led UDF MPs landed in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday to meet the nuns. Though forced conversion is a clear issue in states like Chhattisgarh, no such thing has happened in this particular incident, Rajiv Chandrasekhar said. 'We are confident that they (nuns) have not gone there for that (convertions),' he told reporters here. In a post on X, Sai on Monday justified the police action against the nuns, saying, 'Three daughters of Narayanpur were promised nursing training followed by jobs'. An attempt was being made to convert them by human trafficking by luring them, he added. Rejecting the Chhattisgarh CM's remarks, Chandrasekhar said it was just an allegation. 'We believe that no such things have happened there. It is an allegation. Let's see later who has made all these things and for what. Our top priority now is to protect the nuns from the case and bring them back home safe,' he said. When reporters asked whether the BJP condemns the act of Bajrang Dal, who reportedly behaved in an objectionable manner to the nuns, the leader said the party would strongly condemn the unjustified act by anyone. 'There should not be any ambiguity and doubt in that. We will come back only after ensuring justice for the nuns. That's the party's determination,' he said. Chandrasekhar also made it clear that Bajrang Dal is an independent organisation and the BJP is a political party. 'If they do wrong and act against justice, they will be punished,' he added. Criticising the Congress in the matter, the BJP state chief further said, as in other issues, the grand old party is trying to play opportunistic politics in this matter too. The anti-conversion law in Chhattisgarh was passed by the Congress party when it was in power there, he added. Meanwhile, Anoop Antony, who leads the BJP's delegation, met Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma at his residence and told reporters that the Chhattisgarh government assured them it would intervene in the matter in a justifiable manner. He hoped that the government will intervene. He also said more details of the case could not be divulged at the moment as it is sub judice. The UDF MPs, including Benny Behannan, Francis George, and N K Premachandran strongly condemned the arrest of the nuns and said they would go to the prison here and try to meet them at the earliest. 'We will first go to the prison and try to meet the nuns. Then, we will contact the officials concerned. Our aim is to get the nuns released at the earliest,' Behannan told TV channels here. Premachandran alleged that the arrest of the nuns over charges of trafficking and forced conversion was a deliberate and calculated move. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's justification of the police act was proof for the suspicion that it was carried out with the knowledge and support of the state government and the ruling political leadership here, he charged. Francis George, who was also part of the opposition delegation, sought to know how taking people for a job in a Christian convent would become human trafficking. He further alleged that the arrest of the nuns undermined the fundamental principles, freedom of movement, and religious freedom guaranteed by the Constitution. Before meeting the deputy CM, Anoop Antony said the party designated him to ensure a justifiable intervention in the matter. 'It is Chhattisgarh, and circumstances are different here. So, the objective of my visit is to ensure a justifiable intervention in the matter,' Antony told reporters here. The BJP Kerala unit, which came under vehement attack from political rivals and the church leadership, designated a delegation led by Anoop Antony on Monday to visit the party-ruled Chhattisgarh. The BJP's move came after two Kerala Ministers, P Rajeev and Roshy Augustine, visited the family of nun Preethi, one of the nuns arrested by the Chhattisgarh police. They had visited the family here as directed by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, to offer them the full support of the Left government. A Congress delegation, led by Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan and UDF MLAs, also visited the nun's family to express their solidarity on Monday. The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), an influential body of the Catholic church in the state, strongly condemned the arrest of nuns, calling it a painful and unacceptable incident, and urged the Centre to take justifiable action. The arrest of two Catholic nuns, hailing from Kerala, in the BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion triggered a political controversy in the state. EXCLUSIVE: NOMAD picks favorite Indian food, opens up on musical inspiration and deep appreciation for fans

With the rising interest in K-pop across India, an increasing number of artists are finding their way to the subcontinent to interact with their admirers and build a greater fanbase. During the finale of the All India K-POP Contest 2025 earlier this month, boy group NOMAD sought their first-ever visit to the country and impressed the fans with their performance! Speaking to us in an exclusive chat just a day after landing in India, the group appeared thoroughly intrigued and interested in all that was going around. Speaking about the high-tensioned and high-pitched people around them, leader DOY shared, 'Firstly, Indian people around us are very energized and passionate so we felt welcomed by them right as we landed.' He added how the members had the opportunity to try out some amazing Indian food, which had them hooked. NOMAD's introduction to Indian cuisine Youngest member Junho spoke about their most anticipated dish, one that even Koreans are crazy about, which was Chicken Makhni (Butter Chicken) and Dal Makhni, the first authentic tastes of which exceeded their expectations. Other members chimed in with their own favorites, including Mango Lassi and Gulabjamun, which they said were right up their alley. The classic Indian Samosa had taken over their sense, making them term it as 'special'. Member ONE revealed how it was a country they hadn't visited before and therefore were able to experience it with a clean slate in their minds, and made them glad to have decided to come. Among the many places they'd like to visit, one of the seven wonders, the Taj Mahal, excited them the most. Talking about their experiences as musicians, DOY shared that the visit to Los Angeles remained as their top pick, owing to the fun and learning-filled time that they had while in the USA. RIVR, mostly quiet throughout so far, perked up on being asked about their fans and recalled how the support made him appreciate them more each time, and work hard to release good content. DOY mentioned how maintaining their thoughts of why the members first began their careers as K-pop stars has been the biggest driving force for the group's unity. Giving a shoutout to some of their most-cherished inspirations, the group dropped some big names, including Park Hyo Shin, as their reason to pursue music. Summing it up, the team added that wanting to make the world a better place to live and provide strength to their listeners via their music is the purpose of dreaming about the idol life. The members reminisced about their debut day of February 28, 2024, when their families and friends cheered for their future, in hopes of seeing the team grow further. Much like their name, NOMAD, they wish to set their unique identity in the musical scene and leave a mark with their actions, much like graffiti. The group continues to live with that thought while working to get better each day.

Akhilesh Yadav questions timing of Operation Mahadev

Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday questioned the timing of Operation Mahadev, the joint anti-terror mission which killed three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack. The debate on Operation Sindoor started on Monday and will continue till Wednesday in Rajya Sabha. (PTI photo) Suleman, Afghan, and Jibran—members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed on Monday. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a discussion on Operation Sindoor, Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) central government of attempting to derive political mileage from the military action. 'Why am I not congratulating you on Operation Mahadev? All political parties had extended support to the government when the time was right. After all, why did the encounter happen yesterday?' Yadav asked. Also Read: Who were 3 Pahalgam terrorists killed in Operation Mahadev? Amit Shah reveals names The debate on Operation Sindoor started on Monday and will continue till Wednesday in Rajya Sabha. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also raised concerns about the unresolved aspects of the 2019 Pulwama attack, in which 40 CRPF soldiers lost their lives. 'If the government wants, it can find out how that explosives-laden vehicle managed to enter. Why can't you muster the courage to investigate that?' Yadav questioned. His remarks came in response to Union home minister Amit Shah, who had earlier criticised the Opposition for its perceived lack of enthusiasm over the operation. 'I was hoping the Opposition would be happy with the elimination of Pahalgam terrorists. But they seem depressed,' Shah said in the Lok Sabha in the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament. Shah informed the House that Operation Mahadev was conducted jointly by the Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police based on credible intelligence about the presence of militants in the Harwan area near Dachigam National Park, Srinagar. 'In this joint operation, the security forces neutralised three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack,' he announced. Yadav further alleged that the BJP was attempting to politicise the issue by bypassing recognised political parties. 'No formal political dialogue took place between the government and parties regarding the Pahalgam attack. Instead, you tried to extract political benefits by selecting your own delegation members,' he said.
