Congress rally against price rise starts by paying respects to Pahalgam victims

The Hindu28-04-2025
Senior Congress leaders inaugurated a rally to protest against the NDA-led Union Government, in Belagavi on April 28, by paying respects to the tourists from Karnataka who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir.
All leaders and delegates observed a minute's silence before the rally began. They mocked the price rise by garlanding domestic LPG cylinders. A few women beneficiaries of the guarantee schemes shared their experience and thanked the government of Karnataka.
Most leaders said that the prices of all essential commodities had increased in an unprecedented manner due to the 'wrong economic policies' of the NDA government at the Centre.
Asif (Raju) Sait, MLA and district unit president, welcomed the leaders. He said that the Congress had strongly opposed the terror attack in Kashmir. 'The Congress will support the Union Government in all the tough measures it plans and takes against terrorists,' he said.
He said that the Bharat Jodo padayatra by Rahul Gandhi was a historic event to spread the message of love. 'The ideology of the Congress is the ideology of the Constitution. All of us should accept and follow it. That is the only solution to our problems,' he said.
Laxmanrao Chingale, Chikkodi district unit president, accused the BJP of trying to make the life of the poor worse so that they do not have any time to reflect on the governance of the Union Government.
Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar said that the government of Karnataka is spending around ₹80,000 crore per year on various guarantees and direct benefit transfer schemes, which was unprecedented. 'We are the only government who have fulfilled our promises in less than 100 days. The State BJP has organised the Jana Akrosha rally only to distract people from the failures of the Union Government and the infighting in the State BJP,' she said.
'Karnataka BJP has not succeeded in its rallies. It has stopped them half-way. That is because the Union Government is behind the price rise, and not the government of Karnataka. The day they announced Jana Akrosha rally, the Union Government increased the price of domestic LPG cylinder by ₹50. It was a slap on their face,' she said.
'I urge you to compare the price of food items, cooking oil, petrol and diesel, gas cylinder, fertiliser, cement and other commodities. All this is because BJP leaders are supporting their corporate friends who are interested only in profit. After the Kashmir terror attacks, the Union Government should have arranged free transport for families of the victims. But there were no flights available immediately. The ticket prices were so high. The Centre should be ashamed of not providing transport to the victims. It was the Karnataka government that helped them return home safely,' she said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar, Ministers Satish Jarkiholi, H. K. Patil, K. H. Muniyappa, M. B. Patil, H. C. Mahadevappa, R. B. Thimmapur, MLAs Laxman Savadi, Baba Patil, Raju Kage, former MLAs Firoz Sait and Anjali Nimbalkar, AICC leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala, Nasir Hussein, and Gopinath P. were among those who addressed the gathering.

Edited excerpts:The bill is going to the President's office for her assent. We have been working on this for quite some time now. So, the rules are practically prepared and should be released soon. We are working fast on soon as the law comes into force, the legal provisions will kick have seen the online gaming sector has become a very major part of the digital economy in recent years. This sector has three segments. Two of these – online social games and e-sports – are useful for society. The third, online money gaming, has seriously affected our middle class, our rural families, our youth and our students. There are so many cases of suicides, addiction, and psychological behaviour getting changed because of disorders caused by online money games. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has even classified this as a gaming disorder as a part of their International Classification of Diseases. Feedback was consistently coming from every part of the country, whether Congress or NDA-ruled states, that this is harmful for society, and that action needs to be had been engaged with the gaming industry for more than three years. Many attempts had been made to make them understand the harms to society and even a self-regulating body was proposed. They themselves were getting feedback from society. Unfortunately, it was not effective. The way the harm to society was growing, this would have become a much bigger national problem than the problem of drugs. That's why action had to be taken. When the choice is between saving society, and one segment of an industry, then it is very clear that we have to save Minister Narendra Modi has taken many such strong steps in the past. When the chit fund scam caused a lot of harm to middle-class families, a very strong law was brought in. When the builders were not providing flats as promised despite having taken so many advances, strict action was taken, and the sector was brought under regulation. In this case, the PM focused on saving the affected middle classes, and youth. Saving them was the primary goal of this entire exercise. Parallelly, promoting the good parts of the game industry, game designing, and promoting the creators' economy are major parts of this authority will be created for taking the positive side of the gaming industry forward. Punjab demands Rs 60,000cr from Centre, cites pending GST, rural fund, other dues

1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Thursday urged the Centre to pay the state govt a total of Rs 60,000 crore, including a pending goods and services tax (GST) compensation and other outstanding funds. Cheema criticised the "arbitrary" rationalisation of GST tax slabs as a "gamble" by the Centre, calling it BJP's "jumlebaazi" (fraud). He also questioned the move to rationalise GST by slashing "sin tax" on goods like unmanufactured tobacco and cigarettes. After attending back-to-back meetings of the Union govt's group of ministers (GoM) on GST in New Delhi, Cheema told TOI that the state suffered substantial financial losses under the GST regime without receiving due compensation. "Centre wants to shatter the economy of the states and it is the biggest attack on India's federal structure. When states don't have funds to carry out developmental works, they will have to approach the Centre with folded hands for constructing schools and hospitals. Since the introduction of the GST regime, 27 exemptions have been given to various sectors and items, and rates have been revised 15 times already. It shows the Centre's GST system is faulty and needs to be corrected," he said. Providing a breakdown of the Rs 60,000-crore demand, Cheema said the amount includes Rs 50,000 crore for uncompensated GST losses, Rs 8,000 crore in pending rural development fund (RDF), and an additional Rs 1,000 crore that is set to be withdrawn from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna by dropping certain projects in the state. Cheema highlighted the financial impact on Punjab since GST regime was introduced. "Since the introduction of GST, Punjab has suffered a loss of Rs 1,11,045 crore," he said. He added that while the state's revenue projection was Rs 2,37,520 crore, Rs 1,26,485 crore was promised as compensation under the GST regime. The minister also voiced concerns over the Centre's handling of the compensation cess and the slashing of tax on "sin" goods. He alleged that Punjab suffered financial losses due to the Centre's "wrong policies". He added if the state had not joined the 'one-nation, one-tax' regime, its tax collection would have been much higher. Regarding the tax rate changes, Cheema accused the Centre of "gambling in the name of rationalisation" and randomly changing slabs. He cited the example of tax on unmanufactured tobacco being slashed from 90-98% to 40%, while the tax on cigarettes was reduced from 33-64% to 40%. He questioned how this could be a move to ensure people's health. He noted that the tax on processed food like pasta was proposed to be reduced from 12% to 5%. "At the meeting, we demanded that the state should be compensated on account of any losses due to rationalisation of GST rates," he said. Slamming the BJP, he said, "It is jumlebazi of the BJP-led Centre. They say people will celebrate Diwali, but they have played a gamble by trying to make some goods cheap and others costly... We have supported some of the changes, but the Centre should compensate the states for the losses." During his recent Independence Day speech, PM Narendra Modi announced that "next-generation GST reforms" would be unveiled by Diwali, referring to them as a "Diwali gift" and a "double Diwali" for the people. Address concerns of farmers, workers on priority, demands CPI(M)

The CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Committee has urged the Central and State governments to act immediately to address the hardships being faced by the farmers, workers, and citizens in the wake of floods, soaring power tariffs, and privatisation. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Thursday, CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao, along with Central Committee member K. Lokanatham and State Secretariat member K. Prabhakara Reddy, outlined the resolutions passed at the State Secretariat meeting. Polit Bureau members B.V. Raghavulu and U. Vasuki participated. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the party demanded ₹10,000 per acre compensation for crop losses in the Godavari region, urgent repairs to the tanks, canals, and roads, and a farmer-friendly crop insurance scheme fully funded by the Central and State governments. He said the party opposed land allocation to the LuLu Group malls in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, calling it harmful to small retailers, and urged use of lands for public and RTC development. He condemned the alleged forcible installation of smart meters and an additional ₹12,000 crore tariff burden. He said the party would observe August 28 as 'Pratijna Dinam' to commemorate the Basheerbagh firing incident. Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to the political parties to back the INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential nominee Justice Sudarshan Reddy, and criticised the YSRCP, TDP, and JSP for siding with the BJP-led NDA on the issue. He further said that the party opposed the alleged privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and forced land acquisitions, and demanded priority to tribal rights and Polavaram oustees' rehabilitation.
