'Diogo was an incredibly important player for us. Having him in the side changed the dynamics,' Klopp remarked, underlining the tactical flexibility and cutting edge the forward brought to his squads.
Before arriving in England, Jota's career began in his hometown of Porto with Paços de Ferreira. A 2016 move to Atletico Madrid saw him loaned back to Portugal before finding his stride at Wolves under Nuno Espírito Santo. 'I wanted to join a club that...': Liverpool's record signing Florian Wirtz reveals why he is thrilled to join the Reds
Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz are thrilled about joining Liverpool, with the Reds aiming to defend their Premier League title in the 2025/26 season. Here are some of their thoughts as they get ready to play for Liverpool. After winning the Premier League title in 2024/25, champions have made significant signings in the summer transfer window, making a statement to their rivals that they are no longer the same frugal entity that used to refrain from splashing big money on players. As of now, the Reds have spent over £250 million in the summer transfer window and have acquired the services of eight exciting players. Two of them are Milos Karkez and Florian Wirtz. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Liverpool broke the bank to sign midfielder Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and made a club record by spending £116 million on the player. They got Milos Kerkez at £40 million from Bournemouth. Both players are proven and are expected to enhance Liverpool's capabilities multifold. More from Football Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez thrilled to join Liverpool Ahead of the start of the new season, both players engaged in a preview session with JioHotstar and shared their excitement about joining the club. 'I'm thrilled. It's an honour and a privilege to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world — the biggest in England. I'm truly delighted and excited for the journey ahead.' Kerkez, who will have the duty to fill the big shoes of Trent Alexander-Arnold at the club, said. The attention then moved to Florian Wirtz, who revealed why he chose Anfield as his next destination. 'I wanted to join a club that I consider among the top three in the world, and for me, Liverpool was one of them. I was really impressed by the people here. The vision they presented, and everything the club had to offer. In the end, deciding to come to Liverpool was an easy choice.' Stephen Warnock pays tribute to Diogo Jota Former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock was also a part of the segment. Warnock honoured the late Diogo Jota's legacy and praised the club for retiring his No. 20 shirt. He discussed what the new signings will bring to the table, as Warnock also expressed confidence in Mohamed Salah's ability to continue delivering goals, citing his hunger and desire as key factors in his success. 'When you think of Diogo Jota, the constant smile he played with is exactly what you want to see from footballers — someone who truly enjoyed every day on the pitch. He never took his football for granted, especially being at Liverpool. Jota understood the struggles he overcame since childhood to reach the very top, and he genuinely appreciated the career he was given. That showed in every single game he played,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The 'Forever 20' will appear on Liverpool's shirts, with the club retiring the number as well. This leaves a legacy — it was an incredible gesture from Liverpool Football Club, and the decision has been echoed globally as the right thing to do.' 'What was absolutely vital for Liverpool, knowing they would be without Trent Alexander-Arnold, was figuring out how to replace that creativity. Yes, he is a right-back, but he so often steps into midfield—sometimes a match is flat, and he's the one who unlocks it with a killer pass or a moment of vision. You need more players like that. With his absence, you recreate that by bringing in someone higher up the pitch who can provide that kind of spark. Frimpong coming in at right-back—I don't see it as just a traditional right-back role, but more of a utility position. And with Kerkez on the left, I've watched him for a couple of years and believe he's the ideal Liverpool type of player.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'There will always be questions about whether he can maintain his performance at his age, and if he still has the hunger and desire. But you can already see that he absolutely does. That hunger and desire are what make him elite—one of the best players in world football. No matter how wealthy he is, how well he's paid, or how well he's looked after, it's about delivering week after week. I believe he'll be back and scoring a hat-trick of goals again.' Catch all the action from the Premier League 2025-26 season, August 16 onwards, LIVE & Exclusive on Star Sports Network and JioHotstar.

‘He didn't understand football': Wayne Rooney hits back after Tom Brady questions his work ethic
Wayne Rooney and Tom Brady (Images via Getty Images) When Tom Brady bought into Birmingham City, no one expected the NFL legend to become the star of a football (yes, soccer ) feud. But here we are. In Amazon Prime's new docuseries Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues , the seven-time Super Bowl champ doesn't just sip the tea, he pours the whole pot on Wayne Rooney 's short-lived managerial stint. His main gripe? Rooney's work ethic. And Rooney? Let's just say he fired back with a perfectly curved shot, claiming Brady 'didn't really understand football. ' Now, fans are throwing jerseys and tweets in the air, picking sides like it's a derby day. Tom Brady's blunt critique of Wayne Rooney's time at Birmingham City Tom Brady became a minority owner of Birmingham City in August 2023, right before the club brought in Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as manager in October. Hopes were high, but the honeymoon barely lasted, Rooney's 83-day run saw just two wins in 15 games, and the club was eventually relegated. In the docuseries, Brady didn't hold back: 'I'm a little worried about our head coach's work ethic. I mean, I don't know, I don't have great instincts on that.' Tom Brady blasts Wayne Rooney 😳 He also called the squad from Rooney's tenure 'lazy and entitled,' and admitted that replacing the coach wasn't enough to stop the slide. For Brady, leadership energy and day-to-day drive are non-negotiables, and he clearly felt something was missing. Wayne Rooney claps back with a football reality check Wayne Rooney wasn't about to let that go unanswered. Speaking to BBC in an interview, Rooney said: 'Tom came in once, which was the day before a game, which is a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well at the time. Maybe he does now, Rooney called Brady's comments 'very unfair,' pointing out that Brady reportedly visited the training ground only once and on a light day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo He also stressed the major difference between NFL's 17-game season and the year-round grind of football, hinting that Brady might not fully appreciate the demands of the sport on players and staff. Fans are already picking their fighter Social media is doing what social media does, turning this into a full-on sporting civil war. NFL fans are nodding along with Brady, praising his 'championship mindset.' UK football fans, on the other hand, are rallying behind Rooney, insisting the American legend doesn't get 'proper football.' Memes, sarcastic tweets, and even mock match posters are making the rounds. Whether you're wearing a Brady jersey or a Rooney scarf, one thing's clear, Birmingham City just landed in the global spotlight for all the wrong (or right, depending on how much you love drama) reasons. And with the docuseries still fresh, the debate isn't slowing down. Football, meet American football, now fight.
