Congress to proceed with local body polls after August 15

HYDERABAD: Fresh off its three-day protest in New Delhi over enhanced reservations for Backward Classes (BCs), the ruling Congress has decided to go for the much-awaited local body elections in the state, insiders insist.
Sources said the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is likely to convene a Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting on August 13 or 14 to review the party's protest in Delhi, counter-strategies of the BRS and BJP, and preparations for the polls to elect sarpanches, MPTCs and ZPTCs across the state. The meeting date is expected to be finalised on Monday or Tuesday.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, along with his Cabinet colleagues, MPs, MLCs and senior Congress leaders, staged protests in the national capital demanding that the Union government pass a bill sent by the Telangana Assembly and an Ordinance seeking to raise BC reservations to 42% as well as amend the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act to remove the 50% cap.
The government is likely to notify local body polls after August 15 or 18. The State Election Commission has reportedly completed arrangements to conduct elections for MPTC and ZPTC positions. Existing reservation patterns are expected to continue, with district election officers (usually collectors) tasked with finalising reservations at the village and mandal levels.
Although legislative attempts to mandate 42% BC reservations were not successful, Congress plans to implement this informally. The party also intends to challenge the BJP and BRS to adopt similar BC quotas while distributing tickets. BJP state president N Ramchander Rao has indicated that the party is open to allotting a large share of seats to BC candidates.
BRS leaders have suggested, without formal confirmation, that they may field more BC candidates than the Congress.

Today in Politics: INDIA bloc parties to march to EC office in protest against Bihar SIR

The Opposition's march to the Election Commission (EC) headquarters against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar will be held on Monday, a source said last week. The march, earlier set to be held on August 8, was rescheduled after the death of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. Popularly known as Guruji, Shibu Soren died at a private hospital in Delhi. The Congress is protesting against what it calls large-scale manipulation of electoral rolls in Bengaluru's Mahadevapura constituency in the 2023 Assembly polls. At a meeting of the INDIA bloc parties on Tuesday morning, Opposition leaders agreed that SIR remains the key issue for the Monsoon Session, and they will continue protests inside, as well as outside, the House, pressing for a debate on the issue. Opposition parties have warned that the exercise may lead to disenfranchisement of many, and have called it 'vote-bandi' and 'vote-chori' (vote theft). The Centre will introduce an updated version of the Income Tax Bill after incorporating changes suggested by the Select Committee in the Lok Sabha on Monday. 'To avoid confusion by multiple versions of the Bill and to provide a clear and updated version with all changes incorporated, the new version of the Income Tax Bill will be introduced for the consideration of the House on Monday,' sources said. The Select Committee, chaired by Baijayant Panda, had suggested a host of changes in the Income Tax Bill, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha on February 13. Soon after its introduction in the Lower House, the Bill, which will replace the six-decade-old Income Tax Act, 1961. The 31-member Select Committee had favoured continuing tax exemption on anonymous donations made to religious-cum-charitable trusts in the new law, besides suggesting that taxpayers be allowed to claim TDS refund even after the ITR filing due date without paying any penal charges. The government in the new Bill has exempted non-profit organisations (NPOs) from taxing anonymous donations received by purely religious trusts. However, such donations received by a religious trust that may also have other charitable functions, like running hospitals and educational institutions, will be taxed as per law, as per the Bill. The Maharashtra Congress unit will hold a two-day residential workshop for its newly appointed office-bearers at a hill resort near Pune from Monday. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will inaugurate the workshop virtually. Senior leaders, including All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala and state Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal, will be present at the two-day event, a party statement said. Former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, legislative council group leader Satej Patil, Congress Working Committee member Balasaheb Thorat, and other senior leaders are also scheduled to attend the workshop. There will be several panel discussions and interactive sessions. The Political Affairs Committee of the state Congress is also slated to meet during the workshop, the statement said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh Marg on Monday. The PM will plant a Sindoor sapling at the residential premise and will also interact with 'sramajeevis' on this occasion and address the gathering, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The complex is designed to be self-sufficient and is equipped with a full range of modern amenities to address the functional needs of the MPs, it said. – With PTI inputs

Not a court: P Chidambaram's swipe at poll body over notice to Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader P Chidambaram has argued that the Election Commission of India is not a court but an administrative body and cannot behave like a court while entertaining petitions or complaints. "The ECI is not a Court and cannot behave like a Court in entertaining petitions/complaints. ECI is an administrative body with responsibility for holding free and fair elections," he tweeted. advertisementTalking about Rule 20(3)(b) of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, he said that it will only apply to the case of a specific decision made by the ERO accepting or rejecting a 'claim' to be included in the electoral rolls and will have no application in case of alleged massive manipulation in electoral roll of an entire Assembly ECI is not a Court and cannot behave like a Court in entertaining petitions/complaintsECI is an administrative body with responsibility for holding free and fair electionsBesides, Rule 20(3)(b) will apply only to the case of a specific decision made by the ERO accepting— P. Chidambaram's tweet comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was asked by Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to submit documents supporting his allegation that a voter cast her ballot twice in last year's Lok Sabha the letter, the CEO referred to Gandhi's recent press conference, where he claimed that certain documents in his presentation were 'EC data' and alleged that voter Shakun Rani had voted twice based on records 'given by the polling officer.' The letter mentioned Rahul Gandhi saying, 'Es ID card par do baar vote laga hai, wo jo tick hai, polling booth ke officer ki hai. (This ID has been used to vote twice, the tick marks were made by polling booth officer)'.'You are kindly requested to provide the relevant documents on the basis of which you have concluded that Shakun Rani or anyone else has voted twice, so that a detailed enquiry can be conducted,' the letter Monday, the Members of Parliament from the opposition INDIA bloc will march to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls and alleged election MPs will be led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who has demanded that the election commission release digital voter rolls so that people and parties can audit them."Vote Chori is an attack on the foundational idea of 'one man, one vote'. INDIA bloc's ‘vote chori' march to Election Commission today, cops say ‘no permission granted'

Over 300 MPs from 25 opposition parties will march from the Parliament to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in the national capital on Monday to protest alleged 'vote chori' (vote theft) in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Gaurav Gogoi, and other parliamentarians from the INDIA bloc parties at a protest against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, during the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Friday.(PTI) Several parties– including Congress, Samajwadi Party, TMC, DMK, AAP, Left parties, RJD, NCP(SP), Shiv Sena (UBT) and National Conference – are expected to join the rally, scheduled to start at 11.30 am from the Parliament's Makar Dwar. However, Delhi Police is unlikely to permit the march to reach the EC office, less than 2 km away. A senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity told Hindustan Times that no formal request for police permission has been submitted. According to a Congress communique, 'MPs of Opposition parties (LS & RS) to march from Makar Dwar in Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan (Election Commission), New Delhi via Transport Bhawan at 11.30 AM, tomorrow, August 11, 2025.' No INDIA bloc banner; march to feature multi-language posters The protest, called by the INDIA bloc, will be held without the alliance's banner to accommodate AAP, which exited the alliance last month but has 12 MPs in Parliament. 'This is a programme of the Opposition and we expect AAP to join it,' Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose said. A senior Opposition leader said the TMC played a key role in persuading AAP to participate in the march from Parliament to the EC office on Ashoka Road. Protesters plan to carry posters and banners in English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and Marathi to oppose the Bihar SIR exercise and highlight alleged 'vote theft.' On Sunday, the Congress launched a web portal for citizens to register their support and demand accountability from the EC, urging release of digital voter rolls. 'Vote Chori is an attack on the foundational idea of 'one man, one vote'. A clean voter roll is imperative for free and fair elections,' Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi posted on X. 'Our demand from the EC is clear — be transparent and release digital voter rolls so that people and parties can audit them. The fight is to protect the democracy.' Rahul Gandhi's voter fraud allegation Last week, Gandhi alleged that over 100,000 votes were 'stolen' through five types of manipulation in Mahadevapura assembly segment in Karnataka's Bangalore Central constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. 'We started examining the details and discovered that approximately 1,00,250 votes were stolen in the Mahadevapura assembly,' he claimed while presenting the findings at a press conference. The Election Commission, in multiple social media posts, rejected Gandhi's claims as 'incorrect' and has asked him to submit the data of alleged dubious voters under oath.
