2026 Kia Telluride Goes Boxier in New Spy Shots

The Drive01-07-2025
The latest car news, reviews, and features.
It seems like not long ago that we welcomed the mid-cycle refresh of Kia's three-row family SUV, but in the brutal world of automotive product cycles, that was an entire lifetime ago. Kia's next-generation replacement is already deep in development, and production-ready bodies have already been spotted in the wild, doing SUV things. These prototypes appear to be undergoing hot-weather durability testing, making sure the car's powertrain cooling systems are up to everyday tasks—and then some.
There's still extensive vinyl wrap on these prototypes, but we can see that Kia chose to lean into the boxier design we saw on the updated first-generation model. That overhaul brought with it a more chiseled nose and the entire X-Pro aesthetic, which has proven successful for Kia despite its mild functional upgrades.
Judging by the grille and tire selections on display, we're looking at two or three trim grades here. There appear to be at least two configurations wearing knobby, off-road-adjacent tires (one with the rectangular mesh grille; the other with the white wheel 'accents' and vertical grille orientation). We suspect one is the X-Line, which leans more toward looks, while the other is the full-blown X-Pro.
We don't know specifics of what Kia has in store for the next-gen Telluride, but we have a pretty compelling crib sheet in recently redesigned Hyundai Palisade, which rides on the same platform and utilizes the same powertrains. Hyundai's new SUV will offer a hybrid powertrain for the first time, along with the returning V6. Those trailers in the gallery below aren't foils; the new Palisade hybrid can tow 4,000 pounds, and we have every reason to suspect the Telluride will keep pace.
2026 isn't far away, so we expect to see the new Telluride in the metal sooner rather than later. For now, you can check out these prototypes by swiping or clicking through the full gallery below.

Major EV warning as true battery range for big brands like Tesla and BYD exposed: 'Aussies deserve to know'

Australians considering buying an electric vehicle (EV) have been warned about the real-world battery range on some of the most popular models. Range anxiety has been a thorn in the side of the electric vehicle market for years as Aussie drivers fear they'll run out of juice on a long journey. Major strides have been made to push the maximum battery range for many EV manufacturers; however, these limits have been put to the test on our roads. The Australian Automobile Association grabbed popular models from Tesla, BYD, and Kia to see if they could go as far as they claimed. RELATED Electric vehicle warning as BYD records biggest month of sales in Australia Little-known Centrelink perk offers Australian students free flights ATO warning over $485 billion deadline for thousands just weeks away The AAA's investigation was part of a $14 million Real-World Testing Program to see how cars (including petrol and hybrid models) really performed in the wild. The Program recently discovered 25 out of 30 petrol and hybrid vehicles tested consumed more fuel than their lab results, and more than three-quarters failed to meet expectations. The next round of testing saw EVs taken on urban and rural roads, as well as on a motorway, and they had to contend with real-time traffic. They were also driven inside a lab to see how far the battery would last under perfect circumstances. Carmakers happily boast their vehicles can go certain distances on a single tank or full battery, with the latter used as a huge competitive edge in the EV world. Five electric cars were tested in AAA's program: BYD Atto 3 Tesla Model 3 Tesla Model Y Kia EV6 Smart #3How long did popular EV car batteries last? For the two Teslas, the Model 3 was able to go 513km in the lab, but only 441km on real roads, a 14 per cent difference. The Model Y had an 8 per cent difference, with the car driving 533km in the lab and only 490km outside. The BYD Atto 3 had the biggest inconsistency of 23 per cent, with the lab results showing a battery range of 480km, but a real-world result of just 369km. Kia's EV6 notched 528km in the lab and 484km on real roads, and the Smart #3 had the lowest variation of just 5 per cent, with 455km in the lab and 432km real-world battery range. "Australians deserve to know how vehicles perform on roads," the AAA said. "This testing provides accurate and relevant information to enable more informed decisions for consumers, businesses and fleets buying new light vehicles." Australian Electric Vehicle Association national president Chris Jones blamed the difference in battery range on multiple factors, including high or low temperatures, headwinds, steep terrain, and whether the driver uses air conditioning or heating features during their journey. He said EV makers needed to be more upfront about how far their cars could go so that buyers didn't shy away from them in the future. "It is frustrating that manufacturers are inflating the values when they really ought to be a bit more conservative," Jones said. "I would have thought a 10 per cent difference was reasonable but 20 per cent is pretty bad." Yahoo Finance has approached Tesla, Kia, and BYD for comment. EV subsidies could soon be axed under major overhaul The revelation could serve as a huge blow to the EV industry at a time when subsidies that won over many buyers are on the chopping block. The Productivity Commission is investigating the country's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and highlighted the generous handouts given to those who buy an electric car. It has recommended to dump the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions and state-based stamp duty discounts for the EV market. 'Now that the Australian Government has implemented the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), it should phase-out the exemption of electric vehicles from the Fringe Benefits Tax,' the interim report said. The NVES was implemented earlier this year and it gives every car manufacturer a CO2 target that they either have to meet or beat each year. That target is lowered each year until 2029, which will put increased pressure on brands to have zero or low-emissions vehicles in their fleet. 'The EV purchase subsidies and the NVES overlap, as they both promote the purchase of low-emissions vehicles," the Productivity Commission said. 'EV tax discounts subsidise car buyers to opt for EVs, while the NVES is a broader-based policy that aims to increase purchases of low-emissions light vehicles, including both EVs and more fuel-efficient fossil fuel cars.' The suggestion sparked outcry from the EV industry, with Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) CEO Julie Delvecchio saying the incentives proposed to be axed were "finally helping everyday Australians afford an electric car". 'Suggesting we end incentives just as Australia finally catches up to the rest of the developed world with an efficiency standard is short-sighted. We need both - they work together, not in isolation," she while retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error while retrieving data

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

Sporting bold styling and available all-wheel drive, the 2026 Outlander Sport is Mitsubishi's compact SUV designed for city-friendly driving. The baby crossover is the brand's most affordable option, but its aging design and limited features make it less competitive in a crowded segment. Subcompact SUV rivals include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Nissan Kicks, Mazda CX-30, and Subaru Crosstrek. What's New The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport returns unchanged from last year. Despite a 2020 refresh, it hasn't seen a full redesign since its 2011 debut. Its last updates in 2024 added a Trail Edition (which returns this year), free limited maintenance, a new SEL trim, and rear seat We Think Mitsubishi's most affordable model, the Outlander Sport, is a compact SUV that fits well in tight urban spaces and offers easy maneuverability for city dwellers. It's one of the brand's longest-running models, but although its size and price are appealing, there are notable drawbacks that limit its overall appeal. Styling-wise, it still carries the familiar Mitsubishi design language, and the available Trail Edition adds rugged touches for a more adventurous look. Mitsubishi also sweetens the deal with two years of complimentary limited maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. Unfortunately, the Outlander Sport shows its age. The cabin design feels dated, materials are basic, and lower trims are especially sparse on modern tech and comfort features. Fuel efficiency is unimpressive for the class, and safety ratings lag behind competitors. For shoppers in this price range, it's worth cross-shopping alternatives like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V, which offer better refinement, more features, and stronger safety credentials. Top-Ranked Competitors: MotorTrend Tested The Outlander Sport offers two engine choices. Lower trims come with a 2.0-liter inline-four making 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, while higher trims upgrade to a 2.4-liter engine with 168 hp and 167 lb-ft. All-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup. Not that we've needed to, but it's been a few years since we've tested the Outlander Sport. A 2018 model with the larger engine sprinted to 60 mph in an unimpressive 8.5 seconds. A 2015 Outlander Sport with the smaller engine was even slower, needing 9.0 seconds to hit 60 mph. In comparison, the 2026 Corolla Cross comes with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive models go from 0 to 60 mph in a decent 8.4 seconds, while all-wheel-drive versions lag behind at 9.3 seconds. MPGs and Range Both engines get similar fuel economy. The Outlander Sport returns 23/29 mpg city/highway with the 2.0-liter engine and as much as 411 miles of range. With the bigger 2.4-liter mill, highway mileage drops to 28 mpg, and the Mitsubishi can go up to only 395 miles. The Corolla Cross gets notably better fuel economy, which ins't a surprise given that it's a Toyota. It returns 31/33 mpg with FWD and 29/31 mpg with AWD. It's also available with an even more efficient hybrid powertrain. Safety Ratings and Features Safety testing results could be better. IIHS ratings are incomplete for the 2025 model, but NHTSA gives the small crossover a four-star overall safety, shy of the five-star top award. Automatic emergency braking Lane keeping Automatic high-beams Cargo Space and Interior Room Standard cargo capacity compares favorably to the also small CX-30 and Crosstrek, but once the backseat is folded there's more space in the Subaru (Mazda does not disclose maximum cargo space for the CX-30). Outlander Sport legroom is virtually identical to the CX-30, too. Technology Infotainment Features included with the base model consist of a 7.0-inch touchscreen and a single USB port. An 8.0-inch infotainment interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is unlocked with the trim just above the entry-level grade. A wireless phone charger is not available with any model. Sound System The base model is outfitted with a four-speaker system. All other grades receive a six-speaker setup. Available Upgrades The Outlander Sport can be equipped with heated front seats, pushbutton start, and universal garage door opener. Available upscale styling touches include leather-trimmed upholstery and racy red stitching on the parking brake lever, steering wheel, and shifter. Value Standard Features The Outlander Sport offers the benefits of a city car, namely small dimensions and decent fuel economy. It's also very affordable. Most of the features buyers want are standard on models above the entry-level trim, though. Recommended Trim The Trail Edition offers the most personality. It's standard with all-wheel drive and also scores the leather-trimmed interior and red stitching, as well as a hood protector and front, rear, and side protectors from the Trail package.
