Airbus sees increasing demand for A400M fleet

The Sun21-05-2025

LANGKAWI: Airbus Defence and Space sees that its A400M is gaining traction across the region, driven by rising demand for versatile air mobility solutions in Asia-Pacific.
Its head of Asia-Pacific Zakir Hamid said the company is currently in discussions with several governments and is confident the aircraft's footprint will continue to grow.
He said Malaysia remains Airbus's third-largest market in Asia-Pacific, after China and India.
'For Airbus Defence and Space, a cornerstone of this partnership is the A400M programme, where Malaysia has played a pioneering role as the first export customer in the world.
'This year marks 10 years of A400M operations with the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), a milestone that reflects the aircraft's reliability and versatility. With over 13,000 flight hours, the RMAF is currently the most active A400M operator globally,' he told a media briefing in conjunction with the 2025 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) here today.
Malaysia's fleet of four A400Ms has supported missions ranging from military deployments and peacekeeping to humanitarian relief during events such as the 2018 Palu earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zakir also confirmed that Indonesia is on track to receive its first A400M in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the aircraft already painted and progressing through fuel and ground tests.
Airbus is also exploring options to expand the RMAF's A400M fleet, in line with its growing operational tempo and integration of advanced fighter aircraft.
At LIMA, Airbus announced a new milestone with the RMAF for an expanded in-service support contract for the air force's A400M fleet, which includes increased spare parts provisioning, enhanced services, and future upgrades to ensure continued operational readiness.
In parallel, Zakir said Airbus is keen to offer the A330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) as a solution to enhance the RMAF's operational efficiency further.
Already in service in the Asia-Pacific region in Australia, Singapore, and South Korea, the A330 MRTT combines strategic airlift capability with advanced aerial refuelling, significantly extending the range of fighter aircraft and strengthening national defence readiness.
Airbus is also exploring introducing the C295 maritime surveillance aircraft (MSA) to enhance Malaysia's border protection.
In service across Southeast Asia, Zakir said the C295 MSA offers advanced mission systems, search and rescue capabilities, and long-endurance patrol, which are ideal for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
'As regional partners assess future airlift, refuelling, and surveillance capabilities, Airbus is ready to deliver advanced, mission-ready solutions.
'We are proud to deepen our partnership with Malaysia and support defence and security operations across Asia-Pacific,' he added.

Japan to introduce automated driving system for official govt vehicles

The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry building in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. - Photo: The Yomiuri Shimbun file TOKYO: The government aims to introduce an automated driving system for vehicles used by national and local government officials for official duties, according to a draft strategy revealed Thursday (May 29) for the promotion of the digitisation of the automotive industry. With autonomous vehicles becoming more common, it has been pointed out that Japan is falling behind. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry as well as the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry are working to promote the introduction of the vehicles through more public-private cooperation amid intensifying international competition. For that purpose, government procurement will be utilised. As vehicles used for official government duties often use specific routes, it is believed that those vehicles can be easily replaced with autonomous ones. In autumn, the government will begin conducting pilot tests, in which autonomous vehicles drive regular routes back and forth between the economy ministry building and the Diet Building. Test runs for autonomous trucks are currently underway on a section of the Shin-Tomei Expressway. Starting in or after fiscal 2026, the tests will be expanded to include general roads between logistic facilities and expressway exits and entrances. If automated driving is realized on general roads, it will create an environment in which such services as automated deliveries and joint deliveries to improve load efficiency will become easier. Efforts to share data across automakers will also be strengthened. In addition, the government aims to strengthen the resilience of supply chains. Learning from the Covid-19 pandemic, when a shortage of semiconductor chips led to factory operations being shut down, a system will be established to enable automakers to share information regarding the procurement status of the chips, among other things, starting this fiscal year. The government will also study ways to enhance the convenience of services such as ride-sharing services, in which individuals use their private vehicles to transport others for a fee, by linking the My Number identification system to vehicle information. - The Yomiuri Shimbun

Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk investment incentive programme continues to grow

Many building projects in Sihanoukville have remained abandoned since the Covid-19 outbreak. - Photo: The Phnom Penh Post/ANN PHNOM PENH: An additional 10 investment projects with a total capital of US$154 million will receive special incentives from the Royal Government under the 'Special Investment Promotion Programme in Preah Sihanouk Province'. This brings the total number of projects benefiting from the programme to 297. The latest projects were approved during the 16th meeting of the programme's working group, held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance headquarters on Thursday (May 29). The meeting was chaired by ministry secretary of state Hean Sahib, head of the group. During the meeting, he briefed attendees on the current state of global trade policy and the protection of domestic industries, which have led to a rise in trade barriers and are impacting the Kingdom's exports, as well as industrial development and investment. He explained that despite these challenges, the government remains committed to improving the business environment to attract and boost investment in Preah Sihanouk through a strategy of 'retaining existing investors and attracting new ones', as well as resolving issues through the One Window Service Office system. 'This situation has created momentum for Cambodia to continue economic diversification and attract investment from other countries by doubling efforts to improve the business environment and draw in investors,' he said. Projects approved to join the programme will receive a number of incentives, privileges and procedural facilitation within the framework of the programme, which will continue to be implemented until the end of 2025. According to the meeting, four of the ten newly approved projects are related to stalled building construction, while four are entirely new. One is for the expansion of a previous operation, while one is an existing project. With a total investment of $154 million, the ten projects have the potential to create around 1,200 jobs. The projects include factories, commercial buildings, general education institutions, floating ports, hotels and residential buildings. According to the working group, since the programme began in 2024, 297 investment projects have been approved. They have a total estimated capital of $7.029 billion and will create approximately 53,000 jobs. In June, the working group plans to inspect around 30 proposed projects. The group is continuing to encourage businesspeople and investors to apply for special benefits, such as tax incentives, administrative facilitation and procedural easing related to investment. Im Senghour, head of Century 21 Zillion Holding's Sihanoukville branch, told The Post on May 29 that after a sharp downturn during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the construction, real estate, tourism and overall economy of Preah Sihanouk began to show signs of recovery in 2024. He added that government policies aimed at revitalising the economy in the province are starting to yield positive results, particularly by reviving previously stalled activities. 'The 'Special Investment Promotion Programme in Preah Sihanouk Province' is gradually bringing progress, although its impact is not yet strong, as all of this still depends on the global economic situation,' he acknowledged. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

US says it will start revoking visas for Chinese students

WASHINGTON: If applied to a broad segment of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese university students in the United States, the move could disrupt a major source of income for American schools and a crucial pipeline of talent for U.S. technology companies. President Donald Trump's administration has sought to ramp up deportations and revoke student visas as part of wide-ranging efforts to fulfill its hardline immigration agenda. In a statement, Rubio said the State Department will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from China and Hong Kong. 'The U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students,' he said. The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. China's foreign ministry previously vowed to 'firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests' of its students overseas, following the Trump administration's move to revoke Harvard University's ability to enroll foreign students, many of whom are Chinese. China is also at the epicenter of Trump's global trade war that has roiled financial markets, upended supply chains and fueled risks of a sharp worldwide economic downturn. The decision to cancel Chinese student visas comes despite a recent pause in the U.S.-China trade dispute. International students - India and China together accounting for 54% of them - contributed more than $50 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. University ties to china under scrutiny The State Department has broad authority to issue and revoke visas. The administration last week cited Harvard University's ties to China as among several reasons for revoking its ability to enroll foreign students, a move temporarily blocked by a U.S. judge. Rubio's statement did not offer details on how extensively the visa revocations would be applied. Even a relatively small number could disrupt the flow of Chinese students seeking out higher education in the U.S. that began in the late 1970s from Communist-governed China. Recent decades saw the United States become the destination of choice for many Chinese students looking for an alternative to China's intensely competitive university system and drawn to the strong reputation of U.S. schools. Those students typically come from wealthier families able to afford the high cost of U.S. universities. Many of those have stayed after graduating and have been credited with contributing to American research capacity and the U.S. workforce. The number of Chinese students in the U.S. dropped to about 277,000 in 2024, however, from a high of around 370,000 in 2019, pulled lower by growing tension between the world's two biggest economies, heightened U.S. government scrutiny of Chinese students, and the COVID-19 pandemic. As the U.S.-China geopolitical rivalry has escalated into what many analysts consider a new form of cold war, U.S. agencies and Congress have stepped up scrutiny of China's state-sponsored influence and technology transfers at American colleges and universities. Washington has become increasingly concerned that Beijing uses open and federally funded research environments in the U.S. to circumvent export controls and other national security laws. Greater scrutiny and uncertainty over visas has led more Chinese students to opt for schools in Europe, and more graduates now return to China to ply their trades. Yaqiu Wang, a U.S.-based human rights researcher who came to the U.S. from China as a student, said Beijing had indeed taken advantage of U.S. academic openness to engage in espionage and intellectual property theft, but called Rubio's announcement 'deeply concerning.' 'Broad revocations and blanket bans would not only jeopardize the rights and livelihoods of Chinese students studying and working in the U.S., but also risk undermining America's long-standing position as the global leader in scientific innovation,' she said. During Trump's first administration, then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo led a drive to rid U.S. university campuses of Chinese government-funded Confucius Institute cultural centers, saying they worked to advance China's 'global propaganda and malign influence' and to recruit 'spies and collaborators.' As a result, many U.S. institutions cut ties with the centers. On Tuesday, Reuters reported the U.S. Department of State had halted new appointments for all foreign student and exchange visitor visa applicants, according to an internal cable. The Trump administration has expanded social media vetting of foreign students and is seeking to ramp up deportations and revoke student visas as part of wide-ranging efforts to fulfill its hardline immigration agenda.
