Man arrested for sexual assault, abuse after woman files complaint in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: Film Nagar police have arrested a man on charges of insulting a woman's modesty and criminal intimidation, following a complaint filed by a woman who alleged sustained sexual, physical, and emotional abuse over nearly two years.
The accused, Archit Pasupuleti, has been booked under Sections 69 (sexual intercourse obtained through deceit), 79 (insult to a woman's modesty), 89 (causing miscarriage without consent), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the complaint, Archit was introduced to the woman through a mutual friend and later contacted her via Instagram. They entered into a relationship during which he allegedly promised to marry her, but instead subjected her to repeated sexual assaults and physical violence.
The woman stated that he coerced her into sexual acts under the guise of love, often involving choking, slapping, biting, and other violent behaviour, which left her physically and psychologically traumatised. When she confronted him, he allegedly responded that this was his 'way of showing love.'

Principal booked for abetting suicide of nursing student over caste-based harassment
Navi Mumbai: The Panvel Taluka police have launched an investigation into allegations of caste-based harassment that reportedly led a 19-year-old nursing student to die by suicide on June 3. The student, a resident of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), was in his first year of a BSc Nursing programme at a private college in Poyanje, Panvel Taluka. According to the police complaint filed by the student's mother, the college principal repeatedly subjected her son to casteist slurs and derogatory remarks, which allegedly caused significant emotional distress. The complaint states that the abuse began shortly after the student enrolled in December 2024 and persisted over several months. 'Within a month of joining, the student's health reportedly declined. On the advice of the college principal, he was sent home to Sambhajinagar for medical treatment. It was during this period that he confided in his family about the harassment he was facing,' said a police officer involved in the inquiry. Despite his deteriorating mental state, the student returned to college in April, hoping to resume his studies. However, the harassment allegedly continued. On May 30, during a college event attended by his mother, she too witnessed hostile behaviour. According to the complaint, the principal demanded ₹5 lakh in fees and threatened to issue a leaving certificate if the amount was not paid. The student was also reportedly not allowed to accompany his mother to the Panvel bus stand. In the early hours of June 3, around 1:30 am, the student phoned his mother, expressing his anguish and saying he could no longer endure the humiliation. Alarmed, she alerted his friends, who rushed to his hostel room but found him hanging from the window grille. He was declared dead at the Panvel Sub-District Hospital. Preliminary inquiries suggest the student had enrolled at the college after failing to secure a seat through the MHT-CET. The institution had allegedly assured him of free education and accommodation under the SC reservation quota, but these promises were not honoured. Despite sharing his concerns with his family, he was encouraged to continue for the sake of his future. Following funeral rites, the mother filed a formal police complaint. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 — including Sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s), and 2 — as well as Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 352 (assault or use of criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Duo involved in 10 Cyber frauds arrested
Navi Mumbai: Two frauds with 10 cases of cybercrimes across Maharashtra and other states were recently arrested for a ₹4.71 crore online investment fraud in Vashi. The accused, identified as Vikas Prakash Gawhane, 27, an estate agent from Karanjade, and Manoj Vishnu Kalapad, 22, a BA student from Malegaon, are remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday. According to the Cyber police, the two men lured a 70-year-old retired government officer into investing in fake IPO and index trading schemes by promising high returns. The victim was contacted through WhatsApp and asked to download a fraudulent mobile application to facilitate transactions, said a police officer. Between November 2024 and March 2025, they persuaded the victim to transfer ₹4.71 crore to various bank accounts on the pretext of investment. 'On the app, his profit was shown to have tripled, and as the modus operandi of every online scam, when he tried to withdraw the profit, he was asked to pay an additional amount, which made the victim realise that he was duped,' said the investigating officer. Following a complaint by the retired officer, the accused have been charged under sections 66(D) (punishment for cheating), 319(2) (cheating by impersonation) of IT Act and 318(4) (cheating) and 3(5) (joint criminal liability) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Cyber police conducted a technical probe that led to a digital trail to the two accused. They were arrested on June 7 and remanded to four days of police custody for interrogation. It was found that the duo had opened a fake bank account in Panvel under the name 'Mahadev Construction' using forged documents. The police said that there is a third accomplice who is stated to be absconding. The suspects have used fake mobile applications, misleading websites, and WhatsApp groups to deceive potential investors, said a police officer. The interrogation revealed the accused's involvement in several other cyber fraud cases reported across Maharashtra and other states, suggesting the existence of a wider interstate scam network. On Wednesday, the two accused were remanded to judicial custody.
