EU hopes for a deal as POTUS and Ursula von der Leyen talk

Time of India07-07-2025
The
European Union
aims to reach a trade deal with the US after Commission President
Ursula von der Leyen
(in pic) and US President Donald Trump had a "good exchange", a Commission spokesperson said on Monday.
It was not immediately clear, however, whether there had been a meaningful breakthrough in talks to stave off the imposition of sweeping tariff hikes on the United States' largest trading partner. The clock is ticking down on a deadline for countries around the world to conclude deals with the US after Trump unleashed a
global trade war
that has roiled financial markets and sent policymakers scrambling to protect their economies.
The EU has been torn over whether to push for a quick and light trade deal or back its own economic clout in trying to negotiate a better outcome. It had already dropped hopes for a comprehensive trade agreement before the July deadline.

"We want to reach a deal with the US. We want to avoid tariffs," the spokesperson told reporters at a daily briefing. "We want to achieve win-win outcomes, not lose-lose outcomes."
IN TRADE DEALS, 'TIME IS MONEY'
Von der Leyen also held talks with the leaders of Germany, France and Italy at the weekend, Germany said. "Time is money in the truest sense of the word," a German spokesperson told reporters in Berlin. "In this respect, we should give ourselves another 24 or 48 hours to come to a decision."

Trump May Unleash Ukraine's Deadliest Strikes Yet; ATACMS Could Hit Deep Inside Russia

Donald Trump is reportedly weighing a major escalation in the Ukraine conflict. According to The Washington Post, Trump could authorize Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles at full range, striking deep into Russian territory. This would mark a shift from earlier policies that restricted the missiles' use to certain zones. Some ATACMS strikes have already led to civilian casualties, including a deadly incident in Crimea. Bengal govt plans to export surplus potato to other states

1 2 3 Kolkata: Bengal govt is planning to export potato to other states following bumper production this year, state minister of food processing industries and horticulture Arup Roy said on Tuesday. Speaking at a business conclave organised by ASSOCHAM, Roy said: "We are in talks with the agriculture marketing department to send our excess potatoes to other states. In 2012, Bengal had a similar bumper potato production and we had provided potatoes to students in midday meals. We are thinking of the same this year too." In 2024-25, Bengal recorded a production of 1.4 crore tonnes of potatoes, but the bumper crop resulted in distress sales owing to lack of adequate cold storage facilities. "We are looking for partnership from farmer producer organisations (FPOs) and private entrepreneurs for setting up cold storages," she said. Mahapatra said Bengal's vegetable production is 163 lakh metric tonnes while local consumption is 95 lakh metric tonnes. While fruit production is about 40 lakh metric tonnes, consumption is 35 lakh metric tonnes. "The surplus can be exported to other states and countries with investments in cold chain logistics and export development. The govt is providing extensive support to tissue culture for banana, pineapple, blueberry and ginger, among others," she said.
