Netflix viewers could risk a £1,000 TV licence fine this weekend if they want to watch some of the streaming giants new offering

In the UK, it is mandatory for each household to hold a TV licence if they watch or record live television broadcasts, irrespective of the channel. However, individuals who don't stream BBC iPlayer or watch or record live television broadcasts do not have to own a TV Licence.
Generally, this means viewers who exclusively use streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix aren't required to have a licence. However, all this may now change due to Netflix's new offerings.

On Sunday, June 1, British Netflix subscribers can tune in to the live event from 1am GMT, which will share new information about the streaming giants productions.
Viewers will see updates and trailers for several upcoming movies like Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro and Happy Gilmore 2. As well as updates on critically acclaimed series like Bridgerton, Squid Game, Wednesday and Stranger Things to name a few.
Nevertheless, due to a live event being streamed by Netflix, those in the UK intending to watch must have a TV Licence.
As relayed last year by the BBC, a TV Licence is necessary for viewing any live events on platforms such as Netflix. Most of Netflix's catalogue does not trigger the requirement of a TV Licence fee unless it's being broadcast live, these moments are exceptions when a TV Licence isn't needed.
So, you may be wondering who does and doesn't need a TV licence?
You need a TV licence if you view or record live TV across any service or channel e.g BBC or ITV and you also need a licence if you utilise BBC iPlayer.
You don't need a TV licence for:
Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney Plus
On-demand content via services like All 4 and Amazon Prime Video.
Online video platforms including YouTube.
Watching videos or DVDs.
If you're over the age of 75, you may not need a TV licence. If you are a UK resident aged 75 or older and you receive Pension Credit you can acquire a TV Licence at no cost instead of the standard fee of £174.50.
TV Licensing advises: "Free TV Licences are only available if you're 75 or over and you, or your partner living at the same address, are receiving Pension Credit.
"If you think you're eligible for a free licence but can't apply online, please call 0300 790 6117* and speak to one of our advisors to request an application form (our lines are open between 8.30am and 6.30pm, from Monday to Friday).

Coronation Street and Emmerdale humiliated at British Soap Awards as rival soap wins EIGHT gongs
CORONATION Street were brutally snubbed at the 2025 British Soap Awards as they failed to pick up any of the previously announced awards at this year's ceremony. The annual soap event made a return this year after ITV mysteriously axed the contest in 2024 as Jane McDonald returned for her second year as host of the event. 5 5 5 But it was bad news for Coronation Street as the programme suffered a devastating loss after managing to bag just the specially curated Outstanding Achievement Award which went to Roy Cropper star David Neilson. The show failed to secure wins in any of the main panel or viewer-voted categories amid ITV's ongoing cash crisis and the mass cast exodus at the soap over the past six months. Its ITV counterpart Emmerdale also faced a crushing blow ahead of the impending ITV schedule changes which will see 30 minutes worth of each programme cut a week from January 2026. BBC rival EastEnders swept the board after collecting a total of eight gongs in its 40th anniversary year - more than double its nearest rival, Channel 4's Hollyoaks who got three awards. EastEnders was awarded Best Soap after its huge live episode and anniversary week which saw Anita Dobson return as Angie Watts and Martin Fowler killed off in the arms of his love, Stacey. It was certainly not the only award that they picked up with actress Lacey Turner receiving the trophy for Best Leading Performer ahead of her impending exit from the show. The 40th anniversary also managed to clutch the Scene of the Year thanks to Angie's shock return. Steve McFadden a won a trophy for Best Dramatic Performance as Phil Mitchell but did not attend the ceremony with Angela Wynter and Rudolph Walker also receiving prizes as Patrick and Yolande - beating Corrie fan favourites Lisa Swain and Carla Connor, affectionately known as Swarla, to the Best On-Screen Partnership award. EastEnders storms to victory at British Soap Awards 2025 - winners list in full
EastEnders and Emmerdale were the joint shows to beat at the 2025 British Soap Awards as both had an impressive 13 nominations over 12 categories each - but the BBC soap proved triumphant on the night EastEnders were the big winners at tonight's British Soap Awards, taking away the top gong. Named Best British Soap, they beat Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks to the coveted accolade. Walking away with eight awards in total, Steve McFadden picked up Best Dramatic Performance and Best Single Episode for Phil Mitchell's psychosis. It comes in the soap's 40th anniversary year. Hollyoaks got three awards, Emmerdale got two and Coronation Street walked away with one - the Outstanding Achievement Award to David Neilson, who has played Roy Cropper for 30 years. The biggest names in soapland dazzled on the glitter carpet - with Hollyoaks actress Jorgie Porter and Corrie favourite Tina O'Brien both looking sensational in the same dress, a sparkly Oh Polly number. Speaking before she was presented with the scene of the year award, EastEnders legend Anita Dobson said: 'It was just perfect.' And asked if she could return again, she said: 'I don't think so, although I should say never say never, it would have to be something extra special.' Gillian Taylforth, who plays Kathy Beale, added: 'It was just brilliant, although none of us knew that she was coming back! We'll need Ange back if anything ever happened to Kathy, not that I want it too.' Hosted by Jane McDonald, telly favourites Sir David Jason and Larry Lamb presented awards at London's Hackney Empire.
