Angels' Yoan Moncada out, taking U.S. citizenship test
The Angels placed Moncada on the restricted list on Wednesday. The club is hopeful he will return on Thursday.
Moncada, 30, was born in Cuba. He left the country legally in 2014 and spent time in Guatemala before becoming eligible to join a major league team. He eventually signed with the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent in 2015.
Moncada is in his first season with the Angels. He is batting .221 with eight homers and 24 RBIs.
In parts of 10 big league campaigns, Moncada is batting .252 with 101 homers and 363 RBIs in 795 games with the Red Sox (2016), Chicago White Sox (2017-24) and Angels.
This is the second time in three seasons the Angels had a player go on the restricted list while working to become an American citizen. Eduardo Escobar earned his citizenship in late June of the 2023 season. Escobar was born in Venezuela.
Los Angeles recalled outfielder Niko Kavadas from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old went 0-for-1 for the Angels earlier this season and was batting .228 with 21 homers and 66 RBIs in 102 games at Triple-A Salt Lake.

August 7 - Xavier Edwards connected on four hits, and Heriberto Hernandez homered and drove in two runs as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 6-4 on Wednesday. The Marlins extended their lead to 4-2 in the second as Edwards doubled, advanced on Kyle Stowers' single and scored on Agustin Ramirez's sacrifice fly. Miami made it 5-2 in the third on Hernandez's homer, which went 391 feet and got just over the glove of Sanchez in left field. Houston cut its deficit to 5-3 in the fifth as Mauricio Dubon and Carlos Correa smashed two-out doubles. Sanchez nearly got Houston another run but his 106-mph grounder was fielded on a slick play by Edwards at second. Graham Pauley led off the bottom of the fifth with a homer, extending Miami's lead to 6-3. Houston kept coming in the sixth as Walker singled and scored on Victor Caratini's double. That made it 6-4. But then came Houston's base-loaded rally in the eighth. After Faucher threw Walker out at the plate, Houston nearly tied the score on Dubon's blooper into short right field. A MAN has been pictured grinning with his leg covered in blood after he survived an attack from a bull shark that tried to rip off his foot. Chance Armand was taking a dip while out spearfishing when he saw the shark's shadow and was forced to swim for his life. 5 5 The beast sank its teeth into Armand's leg on Saturday afternoon, about 20 miles offshore of the Pensacola Pass. 'By the time I acknowledged he wasn't gonna turn around, it was too late,' Armand told Fox affiliate WALA. He told WALA that he's familiar with sharks and often sees them when he's out fishing, but was surprised when the beast went after him. 'I didn't really have time to, you know, react otherwise besides put my knee between myself and the shark," Armand said. Armand said that after the shark bit his knee, it turned around and swam back down. He then raced to the boat, where his friends pulled him up to help. 'We were able to fashion a makeshift tourniquet out of a t-shirt, a speargun band and a fillet knife,' Armand said. Then the group took a picture of Armand, posing just minutes after his leg was nearly ripped off. In the picture, Armand is grinning with his tongue out as he holds up his leg, which is covered in blood and has a tourniquet fashioned. He said that he couldn't feel pain from the shark bite at first, and that he could only feel pressure from the attack. Armand said once the spearfishing group had cellphone service, they called 911. First responders met the boat on the dock and he was quickly taken to a nearby hospital. 'By the grace of God, there was no tendon damage, no bone damage, no artery damage, it's just one giant, gnarly flesh wound,' Armand said. The fisherman said he will be sure to have a tourniquet ready the next time he takes to the sea.

Cardinals edge Dodgers despite Ohtani's 1,000th career hit
August 6 - Jordan Walker had a game-tying single in the eighth inning and Masyn Winn scored the go-ahead run on an error as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar brought home runs without getting the ball out of the infield as the Cardinals went 4-2 against the Dodgers this season while winning a pair of series. Four St. Louis relievers held Los Angeles without a run over the final five innings, while right-hander Riley O'Brien pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first career save. JoJo Romero (4-3) did not allow a run over one inning. Shohei Ohtani hit a home run for his 1,000th career hit and struck out eight over a four-inning start as the Dodgers dropped to 3-6 at home since the All-Star break. Freddie Freeman had three hits for Los Angeles, while Alex Call had two in his first home start since his trade from the Washington Nationals. Ohtani gave up one run on two hits with no walks on a day when all fans in attendance received a full-size replica of his World Series championship ring. The Cardinals pulled ahead for good in the eighth. With two runners aboard and two outs, Walker singled to center against Alex Vesia (2-1) to tie the game 3. St. Louis got the run back in the sixth on a Lars Nootbaar ground out.
