'We tested every large SUV on sale in the UK and there was one obvious winner'

A group of motoring experts has tested every large SUV on sale in the UK and compiled a top 10 of the best, with the winner beating the likes of Land Rover and BMW
A group of motoring experts have come together to assess the best large SUV on sale in the UK. Large SUVs are becoming increasingly popular in Britain as people seek safety and security in larger cars.
As a result, manufacturers are building them to cater to the trend and help motorists have more choice.

After taking into account a large range of factors the experts at Auto Express crowned the Skoda Kodiaq as the victor. Commenting on why the Skoda had won, they said: "The Skoda Kodiaq embodies all that the Czech firm stands for: solid value for money, quality, practicality, and a few little surprises that add to the ownership experience.

"The Kodiaq is a little unusual in the large SUV sector for still offering a diesel engine, alongside a petrol with mild-hybrid assistance.
"The diesels can manage around a combined 50mpg, while you can also have plug-in hybrid power for an electric only driving range of up to 62 miles and a six percent Benefit-in-Kind rate for company users. The Kodiaq is a great long distance cruiser."
The all-electric Kia EV9 came second the expert's rankings. While Skoda's offerings begin at a more economical £39,000, you'll need to part with at least £65,035 for the Kia, reports the Express.
The experts remarked: "The cavernous interior fits seven plus luggage, so there have been minimal compromises in packaging all that EV technology.
"The EV9's headline 349-mile range should be more than enough for most owners, and make longer jaunts relatively comfortable, although a figure in the 200s is more realistic, and the EV9's size means it's not especially efficient."

With large SUVs now rivalling the popularity of small hatchbacks from two decades previous, not everyone is cheering.
Safety advocates and other specialists caution that our roads might struggle to handle vehicles whose bulk harks back to World War 1 tanks, posing challenges both to navigating traffic and parking.

Discussing these concerns with the Guardian, Oliver Lord, the UK head of Clean Cities, voiced his apprehensions. He said: "Cars are getting bigger every year – while our streets are not.
"We need carmakers to prioritise normal-sized cars that can be parked more easily and are less dangerous to people walking around. It's only fair if you want to buy a massive SUV that you should expect to pay more for the space it takes up."
Safety concerns extend beyond parking spots, as pedestrians worry about the devastating consequences of being struck by one of these enormous vehicles.
Green Party peer Jenny Jones recently launched an anti-SUV alliance, she said: "SUVs pollute and are often owned and driven by wealthier citizens at the expense of those in less wealthy areas. They feel safer to drive, but are much less safe for any pedestrians and cyclists they collide with."

Dean Harrison clinches maiden Superstock victory with scorching 135mph lap: ‘I'm over the moon'

Harrison was willed on by thousands of fans desperate to see him return to the top step of the podium after a series of near-misses. The Bradford rider, who lives on the island, finished third in Monday's Superbike race and second in the opening Supersport race after leading on the first two laps, but Harrison finally emerged on top. He produced a red-hot final lap of 135.692mph in the shortened two-lap race to take over from Davey Todd (8TEN Racing BMW) and never relinquished his advantage. The 36-year-old was ahead at Glen Helen on lap two by 2.3s and Harrison continued to stretch his lead further to five seconds at Ramsey. He won by 11.656s from Todd, with Michael Dunlop taking third on his MD Racing BMW, 20 seconds further down. 'I've been trying and trying, and everyone will tell you how hard it is to win a TT – to get on the podium is hard enough, never mind win one,' said Harrison. 'It's been a tough week and I've been a bit up and down but I've had a three, two and now one. 'Everyone was waving their arms over the fence and spurring me on and I was digging deeper and deeper as they were waving at me more. 'I just rode as hard as I could, read my boards and I'm over the moon with that. 'I got stuck behind Davo [David Johnson] a little bit on lap one going through Glen Helen, so I was held up a little bit there, but to be fair we've worked so hard all week with Honda and to give Honda a TT win – I'm over the moon,' he added. 'I keep saying that the Fireblade is so fast and we're making the bike better and better every time, and 135mph on a 'stocker is good going.' Dunlop said a problem with the electronics on his BMW didn't help his cause as he sought a first Superstock win since 2014. 'My electronic sensor jammed and I don't know if we've got a gremlin in the bike, but the blipper was working and then sometimes not working,' he said. 'With places so fast here you can't afford not to know if it's working or not.' James Hillier (Muc-Off Honda) was fourth, with Ian Hutchinson (MLav Racing BMW) and Conor Cummins (Burrows/RK Racing BMW) the first six. Former Honda Racing rider Nathan Harrison maintained his fine form with a solid ride to seventh on the H&H Motorcycles Honda ahead Dominic Herbertson (HRRC Adam Hewitt Ltd Honda). Paul Jordan was 12th on the Jackson Racing Honda.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's £130k car is 'banned' from Real Madrid training ground

Trent Alexander-Arnold will have to leave his stunning Range Rover at home as he joins up with the Real Madrid squad, with the defender instead having to pick a BMW to drive Trent Alexander-Arnold is effectively banned from driving his £130,000 Range Rover to Real Madrid 's training ground. The 26-year-old right-back officially became a Los Blancos player on Sunday, signing a six-year contract after leaving his boyhood club Liverpool as a free agent. The Premier League champions did receive an £8.4million fee for Alexander-Arnold, however, to release the defender early from his contract, as Real Madrid were keen for the player to join up with the squad in time for the Club World Cup later this month. ‌ But as the England international becomes acquainted with the rest of Xabi Alonso's players, he will have to say goodbye to the car model he's been driving around the UK. One of Alexander-Arnold's preferred vehicles to drive was a Range Rover P530. ‌ His luxury SUV featured a 4.4 V8 twin-turbo engine that delivered 530 horsepower and a maximum torque of 750 Nm. His version of the model, which is no longer for sale, was priced by Land Rover at £130,000. Combined with its eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system, it could propel its more than 2.5 tonnes from 0 to 100km/h in 2.6seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. But if the player had been hoping to fly the car over to Madrid or buy a similar model for everyday use in Spain, he would've been left bitterly disappointed. That's because Los Blancos' sponsorship agreement with BMW prevents the players from being able to drive any other car brand to training, reports Spanish outlet El Motor. Each year, the German car manufacturer provides the Real Madrid squad, as well as the women's team and basketball team, with cars to use throughout the season. The agreement only includes plug-in hybrid and electric models, with the cars later sold off by BMW as pre-owned models. Alexander-Arnold's potential disappointment is at least alleviated by the fact he will still be able to drive a high-performance SUV like the one he currently owns – for free. For instance, the sporty BMW XM has been one of the most popular choices within the club. ‌ Both Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Arnold's England team-mate Jude Bellingham have opted for that model, which has 653hp and costs around £152,000. Meanwhile, Vinícius Junior opted for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which costs slightly more at £157,000. Alexander-Arnold has wasted no time in settling into his surroundings, having made his first public appearance as a Los Blancos player by attending the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. There, he met club legend Roberto Carlos, who he posed with for a photo. The Liverpool academy graduate also showed his excitement towards his new chapter by replying to Real's post celebrating new manager Alonso's arrival. He wrote 'El Jefe' – meaning 'the boss' – in Spanish.
