HoopsHype: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ranked as No. 1 point guard in NBA

It's August, which means it's the perfect time to forecast what the 2025-26 season could look like. The NBA has entered vacation with most offseason moves done. By now, we have a pretty good idea of what all 30 teams will look like when training camp kicks off in two months. To get ready for the 2025-26 season, HoopsHype ranked the 26 best point guards in the NBA. It's arguably the richest of the five position groups in the league. Considering how last season transpired with the Oklahoma City Thunder capturing their first championship, it's pretty easy to guess who sits at the top spot. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came in at the No. 1 spot in the rankings. He's fresh off one of the greatest individual seasons ever. He won about every award imaginable, from MVP to NBA Finals MVP. He capped it off with a ring that cemented his spot among the league's best players. "Gilgeous-Alexander is pretty much unstoppable on offense, and with such a strong team around him, it wouldn't be surprising to see Oklahoma City repeat in 2025-26 with its star floor general leading the charge," HoopsHype wrote. "We also wouldn't be shocked to see the Top 2 players in this ranking be the Top 2 finishers in MVP voting next year." When you win an NBA championship, you get all the glory that comes with it. For Gilgeous-Alexander, a title was just the cherry on top of his rise to the NBA's best point guard. He's now entered all-time great conversations with an MVP award that was due after three consecutive 30-plus point campaigns. Considering the Thunder signed Gilgeous-Alexander to a supermax contract extension this summer, expect OKC to remain a title contender for the foreseeable future. We ranked the Top 26 point guards for 2025-26.(We placed Cade Cunningham ahead of Stephen Curry.)

Tre Johnson had a hilarious reason for wearing No. 12 with the Wizards

Tre was so real for his answer 🤣 After wearing No. 20 as a freshman at Texas, rookie Tre Johnson will begin his career in the NBA with the Washington Wizards with a new look on the court. Johnson chose No. 20 to pay tribute to his father, Richard Johnson Jr., who wore it for four years at Baylor University and Midwestern State (Texas). Richard was inducted into the Midwestern State Hall of Honor after finishing with 1,009 points in two seasons. The sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft was forced to change numbers as second-year center Alexandre Sarr currently wears No. 20. He went with No. 12 and revealed a hilarious reason why he chose it during his introductory press conference on June 28. While it appears as though there was little to no meaning behind choosing No. 12, Johnson still found a way to represent his father in the NBA: He asked the Wizards to include "Johnson III" on his jersey since he was named after him. Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year. The 19-year-old debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished with 21 points on July 13. Johnson impressed the Wizards throughout the predraft process with his ability on the court, competitiveness and character. He is eager to get to work with the team, and will do so with a new jersey number. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA. Magic rookie Noah Penda shares wholesome memory of watching Dwight Howard growing up

Orlando Magic rookie forward Noah Penda revealed Tuesday on X that he grew up watching Dwight Howard when the future Hall of Famer was with the franchise. Howard spent the first eight years of his career with the Magic, leading the team to the NBA Finals in 2009. He was inducted into the Magic Hall of Fame in March after leaving as the franchise's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks, free throws and minutes. The No. 1 pick in 2004 established himself as one of the most dominant players in the NBA on both sides of the ball during his tenure with the Magic. Penda wanted to emulate Howard because of that ability and is honored to join the team that he first played for. Penda was named the LNB Pro A Best Young Player last season with Le Mans Sarthe, averaging 10.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals on 44.7% shooting from the field in 30 games. The 32nd pick ranked fourth in the league in steals and 13th in rebounding. The 6-foot-7 Frenchman debuted with the Magic in the NBA Summer League, averaging 11.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, three assists and 1.7 steals on 51.7% shooting from the field in three games. He neared a double-double on July 13 with nine points and 14 rebounds. Penda was highly touted entering the draft because of his scoring, defensive versatility and length, boasting a 7-foot wingspan. He is eager to get to work with the team and is hopeful that he can impact games just as Howard once did.
