New way to delete texts from OTHER people's phones revealed after surprise upgrade on millions of mobiles
Roll-out could be a 'gamechanger' but also raises privacy concerns TOTAL WIPE-OUT New way to delete texts from OTHER people's phones revealed after surprise upgrade on millions of mobiles TECH giant Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to delete messages on other people's phones. The roll-out is expected to affect millions of smartphones – but has also raised privacy concerns. 1 Google engineers have come up with a new way to allow users to delete messages For anyone who has ever sent a message with an embarrassing typo – or just an embarrassing message – this could be a gamechanger. Google engineers have come up with a new way to allow users to delete the messages even after the other person has received it. The new "Delete for Everyone" function in the Google Message app allows the sender to remove the message from both the sending and receiving device. Hitting the "delete" button will also remove the message from the chat history. It comes after Apple and Meta introduced similar functions. Already in use Users of Apple's iMessaging service already have the capacity to delete messages while WhatsApp announced its "Delete for Everyone" function for customers back in 2017. There are, however, several issues to be aware of for Google users excited about the new development. First of all, it's important to note the service is only available if the person receiving the message has not opened it or saved it. Selfish WhatsApp trend causes nightmare for Brit phone owners If they have – it won't work. The second point to note is the function is only available if both parties taking part in the chat are using compatible RSC set-ups. RCS – or Rich Communication Services – is the successor to SMS and MMS, and has been available on Android devices from both Samsung and Google for more than a decade. However, Samsung has cautioned Android owners with iPhone-owning friends that their text messages might not be as secure as they think. In 2024, Apple rolled out the long-awaited RCS as part of iOS 18. Samsung concerns Samsung's first RCS capable devices were launched in Europe in 2012, and have been in the US since 2015. It essentially makes iPhone-to-Android texting much more like iPhone-to-iPhone texting via iMessage. However, Apple has not yet included end-to-end encryption with its RCS messaging – meaning conversations had with this new feature could be intercepted. In a statement on its support page, Apple states: "Apple's implementation of RCS is based on the industry's standard. "RCS messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, which means they're not protected from a third party reading them while they're sent between devices." End-to-end encryption scrambles messages into a code that cannot be read by hackers, or even the host messenger. It's what Google Messages, iMessage and WhatsApp use to make sure messages are read by the sender and recipient alone. 'Samsung and Google welcome a new era of more seamless, cross-platform messaging,' the company said in a statement recently. 'With the latest version of iOS supporting RCS, the benefits are available beyond the Android ecosystem,' Samsung added, before warning that 'encryption is only available for Android to Android communication'. Concerns have also been raised that messages sent during disputes or legal matters could also be deleted.

Amazon builds new electricity infrastructure at its Belfast base for EVs
Amazon operates its main major delivery base from the Titanic Quarter at Belfast Harbour. It is now developing new infrastructure to assist in meeting EV charger demands, in a bid to support its fleet electrification. 'The proposed substations will support charging stations for electric vehicles and complement the operation of the Amazon warehouse,' plans say. 'The proposed facilities will be located on small patches of brownfield land located adjacent to the existing Amazon Belfast depot.' Partner EO Charging is behind the new development, and has helped roll out some 800 EV chargers for the digital retailer over the last few years. Amazon remains one of EO's largest clients and is undergoing fleet electrification across many of its distribution sites. 'EO is a pioneer in EV charging and has been at the forefront of electrifying fleets for a decade… sites including at [Belfast],' the plans say. 'This will enable a reduction in carbon emissions and facilitate a move to utilising renewable energy to power the fleet.' It will develop a new substation to deal with the required power capacity, with a distribution network operator (DNO) and ring main unit (RMU). Elsewhere, Amazon recently placed a major order of electric trucks for its UK fleet. That includes 140 new electric Mercedes-Benz Truck eActros 600s and eight Volvo FM electric trucks. To support the electric fleet, Amazon is planning to install fast-charging infrastructure across key UK sites. It is also expanding its fleet elsewhere, including more than 300 new electric vans from Rivian, which will hit the road in Germany. In Northern Ireland, Amazon currently operates a fleet of electric and zero-emission vans to deliver across the region from its Belfast base. In Belfast, the new electricity infrastructure is being developed 'to ensure that it is in keeping with the character and appearance of the wider industrial site'. Aside from electric vans, which operate across Northern Ireland, Amazon also runs a fleet of electric cargo bikes in Belfast.

Opel launches electric version of its latest Mokka
After a refresh earlier this year, the Opel Mokka range has had an extended range EV version added to its current petrol and hybrid lineup. The electric option benefits from a rather modest 1.615 kerb weight, making it lighter than some of its competitors and giving it a better chance of achieving longer range with more efficiency. The previous electric Mokka had a claimed range of 324 kilometres and the company claims the latest model can achieve up to 403 kilometres on a single charge - the usual caveats on claimed ranges apply until we see what real world conditions yield. After grants, the entry-level Mokka EV costs €30,227 so it's an addition to the growing choice (finally) of budget-friendly electric cars on the market. This price is just under that of the equivalent petrol manual version. It has a 54 kWh battery and a 115 kW electric motor. The battery is now located under the floor to avoid it taking up valuable interior space. Standard equipment includes 16" wheels, a black seat trim, extended traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, driver drowsiness alert, forward collision alert, enhanced auto emergency braking with pedestrian detection, six airbags, cruise control with intelligent speed limiter, and electronic climate control. There is a 10" driver information display and a 10" infotainment touchscreen, with Apple and Android compatibility. It also has USB type C connectivity, DAB radio, auto high beam assist, rain sensitive windscreen wipers and rear park assist. An Elegance version (€32,570) gets extras such as 17" alloy wheels, heated steering wheel, heated driver and front passenger seats, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, blind spot alert, a 180 degree panoramic rear view camera. There is also a GS model (€ 33,975)that gets matrix headlights, 18" wheels and other extras.
