KUCHING (June 3): The Brarak and Bipajak Gawai Bisegu cultural event has been proposed for inclusion in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar, with the aim of elevating it into one of the state's premier cultural tourism attractions.
Deputy Minister for Transport, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, made the announcement during the event held at Kampung Segu Benuk in Padawan on Monday, highlighting the festival's strong potential as a community-driven tourism initiative.
'Last year, the parade featured only six contingents. This year, the number has increased to 21, with an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 participants, a clear indication of its growing appeal,' he said, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Dr Jerip said the event, organised by the Segu Bunuk Association, will continue to be refined and expanded based on community participation and public response.
'With the involvement of 21 contingents this year, we are confident the festival will continue to grow, offering even more vibrant and engaging activities in the years to come,' he added.
The Mambong assemblyman also underscored the importance of such cultural events in promoting Sarawak's heritage to tourists, positioning them (the cultural events) as competitive cultural tourism products.
'These celebrations provide an important platform for local communities to express their identity, particularly through traditional attire and a shared sense of cultural pride,' he noted.
Among those present at the event were Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin; Special Administrative Officer of the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), Datu Ik Pahon Joyik; Administrative Officer of the Padawan Sub-District Office, Julius Scott Sapong and other distinguished guests.

LIMBANG (Aug 20): The Limbang District Council (MDL) has identified 18 locations across the district to be developed as tourism attractions over the next five years, in a move aimed at unlocking the region's potential as a travel destination. Council chairman Councillor Sufian Mohat said Limbang is blessed with natural and cultural assets that can appeal to both domestic and international visitors. 'In the next five years, we will focus on developing these 18 sites into attractive tourism spots. Work is already underway, and five of them have been officially recognised,' he told reporters during a press conference for the Santaba Jetty Festival at the MDL office today. The five recognised sites are Tasik Bukit Mas, Santaba Jetty, Lumpur Bebuak, Limbang Recreation Area, and Inap Desa Alai Gayo. Sufian also highlighted MDL's efforts to boost visibility through signature events, noting that Bukit Mas Day, Lumpur Bebuak Festival, and the Santaba Jetty Festival have been listed in the Limbang Division Tourism Calendar, with two of them also featured in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar. Turning to the upcoming Santaba Jetty Festival, he described it as a showcase of the district's scenic charm and cultural vibrancy. 'We are targeting a crowd of 5,000 visitors for this year's festival, which will take place on Aug 23 to 24 at Kampung Patiambun,' he said. The festival will feature a mix of cultural activities, traditional sports, and exhibitions, aimed at encouraging community involvement and fostering unity among residents. 'It can also promote local tourism by highlighting the beauty and uniqueness of Santaba Jetty, while preserving and introducing our cultural heritage with the outside community and younger generation,' Sufian added. Among the highlights of the two-day event are tug-of-war competitions, a decorated boat parade, and traditional sports and performances by the Bermukun and Kedayan communities. (UKAS pic) PETALING JAYA : The RM450 million Miri Marina bridge will help turn the city into the San Francisco of Sarawak, says Abang Johari Openg. The Sarawak premier said the two-lane cable-stayed bridge would not only offer scenic views of the South China Sea but would reduce travel time between Pulau Melayu and the Marina to five minutes from the current half an hour. 'This landscape upgrade in Miri, with its iconic facilities and connectivity infrastructure, aligns with the city's image as the resort city of northern Sarawak, putting it on par with other tourist destinations,' Abang Johari was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post. He said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre. The construction of the 650-metre bridge, styled after the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. It will take four years to complete. Separately, the Dayak Daily quoted Abang Johari as saying that the project is expected to boost tourism and the local economy as well as resolve congestion issues.

They are not merely geographical landmarks, but historical and cultural emblems that we must preserve,' he said at the Bung Muan Festival, organised by the Persatuan Asal Serembu Bau (PASB) on Saturday. He reaffirmed his commitment to bringing more phased development projects across Serembu, including community-driven initiatives, tourism infrastructure and economic development programmes.
