Malaysia to boost maritime security with advanced surveillance tech
LANGKAWI: Malaysia will increase investments in advanced surveillance technologies, including in autonomous unmanned vehicles (AUVs), to further strengthen maritime security.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the country will also enhance intelligence-sharing mechanisms and conduct more joint naval exercises with trusted international partners to ensure preparedness against emerging threats.
"Malaysia will continue to enhance its naval and maritime enforcement capabilities to protect our national interests.
"We must also keep pace with the rise of emerging and disruptive technologies that can optimise our ability to address maritime concerns," he said in his keynote address at the Malaysia Maritime Conference (MMC), during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) here on Wednesday (May 21).
Mohamed Khaled said Malaysia will also continue to strengthen its legal framework to combat illegal fishing, marine pollution, and encroachments by foreign vessels.
He added that by reinforcing enforcement mechanisms, Malaysia aims to ensure accountability and deter illicit maritime activities.
"True economic prosperity cannot be achieved without maritime security. Both traditional and non-traditional threats - including illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, piracy, smuggling, and marine pollution, continue to challenge our sovereignty," he said.
He also pointed out that disruptions to global supply chains, shifting geopolitical dynamics, and evolving security threats further underscore the need for a strong and coordinated maritime defence posture.
Mohamed Khaled highlighted the role of emerging technologies, particularly the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for data analysis, maritime threat monitoring, and undersea research and exploration.
On the conference, he said it must serve as a vital platform for exchanging ideas, fostering partnerships, and refining forward-looking policies to position Malaysia as a leading maritime nation. - Bernama

Heitman Secures HESTA Investment For European Alternative Real Estate
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- Heitman LLC (Heitman), a global real estate investment management firm, has announced an allocation from HESTA to invest in European alternative property types, including self-storage, student housing, residential, and health care. Heitman in a statement said this investment establishes the company as one of HESTA's largest international property investment managers. 'Unlike the traditional property types, the alternative sectors are driven by needs-based demand and are undersupplied, making them less tied to economic cycles. 'We believe this makes them an attractive way to benefit from the price reductions available in Europe whilst mitigating exposure to uncertain economic conditions,' said Heitman Managing Director, European Real Estate Investment, Caleb Mercer. Meanwhile, HESTA Head of Portfolio Management, Jeff Brunton said: 'The new allocation with Heitman will support us to continue to build a well-diversified portfolio of property investments designed to help deliver strong long-term returns for our more than one million members.' With over one million members and approximately AUD$93 billion of funds under management, HESTA is one of Australia's largest superannuation funds dedicated to health and community services. (AUD$1 = RM2.74) HESTA is an existing investor with Heitman through its United States core investment strategy. HESTA's new investment adds to Heitman's footprint in Australia, with Heitman currently managing AUD$8.4 billion across real estate equity and debt strategies. Founded in 1966 and globally headquartered in Chicago, with European headquarters in London, Heitman has 10 offices worldwide and is an active participant in the global real estate property and capital markets. -- BERNAMA

Investors hesitant amid global economic concerns, says Tengku Zafrul
Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said it is becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Foreign investors are taking a cautious approach towards new investments in Malaysia due to global economic uncertainties, investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said today. He warned that attracting new investors would be challenging in the current climate, noting that while existing investors in Malaysia remained committed, newcomers were showing hesitation. Advertisement 'Those who have committed have not pulled out. But the ones that have not committed are now thinking (whether to invest or not),' he told reporters during the regional launch of the Asean Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030. He also said it was becoming increasingly difficult to make projections on investments. 'When we have discussions with companies, we understand their concerns. Many (investors) are adopting a wait-and-see approach due to the dynamic geopolitical situation, especially between the US and China. 'New companies looking to invest want to assess the global situation first,' Tengku Zafrul added. When asked about Malaysia's RM89 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of the year – up 3.7% from the same period last year – Tengku Zafrul said it was 'pleasantly surprising' given typical first-quarter sluggishness. 'In terms of foreign investment, it is almost 70% of the investment. And at the same time, we see that the biggest sector is services, especially the digital economy,' he added. Tengku Zafrul is expected to travel to Washington on June 18 to continue negotiations over the US tariffs imposed on Malaysian goods. He said the Malaysian government hopes to persuade Washington to reduce import duties for certain sectors to below 10%. 'We also want to ensure that our local companies exporting to the US – especially in sectors such as furniture and downstream palm oil – are taken into account,' Tengku Zafrul said, adding that these sectors 'are not really in competition' with American industries. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The forum, co-organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), also serves as a platform for the Protem Committee of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) to present their views on the future of the media following the approval of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Bill 2024 in Parliament in February. The highlight of Hawana 2025 on Saturday will certainly be the inauguration of the celebration by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Dewan Merdeka WTCKL. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching are also expected to attend. Also expected to attend are Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa; Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as the top management of media companies in the country. At the event, the Prime Minister is expected to present the Tabung Kasih@Hawana contributions to veteran journalists in need of assistance, as well as to award prizes to the winners of the Pesta Pantun Hawana-Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, which was held for the first time on May 31. This year's Hawana celebration will also witness the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Award and Hawana 2025 Special Award to individuals who have made significant contributions not only in the field of journalism but also in shaping public minds through their works. To further enliven the Hawana 2025 celebration, two well-known local singers, Dayang Nurfaizah and Anuar Zain, will also be performing. The Hawana 2025 celebration continues throughout the year with media sports events that highlight traditional elements and a series of tours to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak and Johor. A total of 79 strategic partners, an increase from 44 last year, have sponsored and contributed to the success of Hawana 2025, thus proving that Hawana is now garnering attention not only from government departments and agencies but also from corporate companies. May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the "Utusan Melayu" newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who serve as a medium for shaping an informed society. To further add to the Hawana 2025 celebration, promotional banners have been installed along several highways including PLUS, MEX, as well as major roads around the capital, not to mention displayed on LED screens. - Bernama
