Diogo Jota's family to attend Liverpool's Premier League opener as special tributes planned

Daily Mirrora day ago
Diogo Jota's family are set to attend Liverpool's first Premier League game since the footballer's tragic passing, with Reds boss Arne Slot saying they will "always have our love and support"
Arne Slot has revealed that Diogo Jota's family will be at Anfield for their Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Jota tragically passed away in a car crash alongside his brother last month shortly after getting married.

The footballer tied the knot with his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in June, with the couple having three children together, and Jota's family are set to attend Liverpool's first league game since his passing.

In his programme notes ahead of the game, Liverpool boss Arne Slot wrote: "As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more.

"I believe that Diogo's wife, his children and his family will be in attendance and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always."
Team-mate Alexis Mac Allister also recently paid a touching tribute to Jota, opening up about their relationship. "There's one in the group who will hold a special place in our hearts forever.," he said in the Players' Tribune.
"Obviously, and with great emotion, I want to dedicate this paragraph to Diogo. I still can't understand how he left us so early. I always had a good relationship with him, but this past year even more so.
"He was always a very down-to-earth, family-oriented person, and never tried to pretend to be something he wasn't. One day he would come and give you the hug of a lifetime, and the next day he wouldn't even say hello, hahaha.
"We loved to 'take the p***,' and we always found a way, whether it was our Messi vs. Cristiano arguments, or just playing cards. It was part of the game. I will always choose to remember him with a smile.

"And I know that with that smile, he'll be supporting us from above. If you don't believe that, then just look at the minute Frimpong scored in the Community Shield. The 20th. These are signs……
"I'd like to take this opportunity to send my warmest regards to his family, whom we must never forget, as they are the ones who are suffering the most from the tragic passing of him and his brother André. My respect and love to all of them."

Chapman will begin his tenure on Saturday, and we examine his life beyond television, including his footballing allegiances and salary details. Mark Chapman's Gary Lineker quip Whilst Saturday marks Chapman's debut as permanent presenter, according to PA, with colleague Logan handling the Sunday programme, he is well-versed in fronting MOTD, reports the Mirror. Chapman's MOTD 2 responsibilities frequently involved presenting the midweek programmes, and a January appearance saw him deliver a humorous remark during the period of Lineker's exit announcement. Article continues below Chapman quipped about his upcoming role in January (Image: BBC) The 51-year-old began the show alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer with a clever reference to his forthcoming position, stating: "Evening, thought I'd get the practice in..." His co-stars couldn't help but chuckle at the admission, with Shearer exclaiming: "You haven't wasted any time, have you? Six months too early!" Chapman retorted: "It's going to be a long night, eh?" ‌ What football club does Mark Chapman support? Former presenter Lineker made no secret of his devotion to childhood team Leicester City, where he launched his playing career. He turned out more than 200 times for the Foxes between 1978 and 1985. Chapman, who isn't a former professional, having begun his BBC journey in 1996 as a community announcer, also holds allegiance to a major English club in Manchester United. Chapman is a Red Devils fan (Image: Getty) ‌ Hailing from Rochdale, Chapman revealed to the iPaper in 2018: "It's not my fault that I support a big team! I had to put up with a lot of poor, if at least entertaining, stuff in the 1980s. I am a genuine Manchester United fan." Following the Red Devils' challenging 15th-placed Premier League campaign last season, featuring some woeful performances, Chapman revealed during a 2025 Catchphrase appearance: "By the time we go on air, I've had enough time to stop being a sore loser. So by then I'm fairly impartial." How much does Mark Chapman earn? Lineker was famous for being amongst the BBC's most handsomely remunerated employees throughout his tenure with the broadcaster. Reports suggested he earned approximately £1.35million last year prior to his departure. ‌ Hosting duties will rotate between Chapman, Cates and Logan (Image: BBC/Charlie Clift) Colleague Shearer was also a top earner last year with a reported salary of £440,000, though Chapman earns considerably less than the two former England strikers. Throughout the 2021/22 season, Chapman earned roughly £250k, and this salary was subsequently boosted the following campaign to around £325k. Article continues below During the 2023/24 season, Chapman took home somewhere in the region of £260k for his coverage on Radio 5 Live, MOTD 2, the Challenge Cup, the Euros and Olympic Games.

Antoine Semenyo praised for his reaction as Bournemouth express anger over racist abuse

Antoine Semenyo went on to score two excellent counter-attacking goals in the second half for Bournemouth after allegedly being subjected to racist abuse on the sidelines Bournemouth have expressed their shock and anger that the opening match of the Premier League season was overshadowed by an incident of alleged racist abuse towards Antoine Semenyo. ‌ The match between the Cherries and Liverpool on Friday night at Anfield was halted in the first half after Semenyo reported that a supporter had said something to him while he was preparing to take a throw-in. Liverpool later released a statement condemning the alleged actions while confirming that the police are now investigating. ‌ Arne Slot's side went on to win the game 4-2 with late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah. But Semenyo produced a remarkable performance in the second half, scoring twice to drag the away side back into the game. ‌ The Bournemouth winger kept his composure to tuck in David Brooks' cross for 2-1 before charging forwards on another counter-attack to find the bottom corner for 2-2. While full of admiration for his team-mate, captain Adam Smith expressed fury at full-time. "Totally unacceptable. Kind of in shock it happened in this day and age. I don't know how Ant has carried on playing and come up with his goals," Smith told Sky Sports. "He's a little bit down. Something needs to be done. Taking a knee has taken no effect. We've supported him and hopefully he'll be OK. I wanted him to react [after scoring], that's what I'd have done. I'd have gone straight over there. It shows what kind of man he is to report it to the ref and carry on. Fair play to Ant. "It's more anger. Shocked. I said to the ref I wanted him removed immediately but the police went and sorted it. The Liverpool players were very supportive to Ant and the rest of the team. Just so angry. "We've had discussions with the Premier League about it so they have been taking it seriously. I don't know what else we can do. We've been doing it for a long time now and no-one is getting it. I just feel sorry for Ant and he's had to take that. The whole country is watching and it's shocking." ‌ Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola added: "The referee explained to both managers straight away the situation. It is a big shame we have to start talking about these things. "The Liverpool manager and the players they feel it the same. Everyone understands that these things have to be out of everywhere but especially football. "Now we have to go again to talk to the police and the officials. I think for sure he (Semenyo) will have it in his head [now] and it shouldn't be like this." ‌ Kick it Out said in a statement: "Thirty minutes into the first Premier League game of the season, and Bournemouth 's Antoine Semenyo is racially abused by someone in the crowd. "Two nights ago, Tottenham 's Mathys Tel was racially abused online. This is a stark reminder of an ugly reality: black players are facing this every week. "We stand in solidarity with Antoine and can't praise him enough for his courage in calling this out after such a distressing episode before going on to score twice. "Anthony Taylor and his refereeing team also deserve credit for acting swiftly and decisively. We will keep pushing to kick this disgusting behaviour out of the game through punishments, accountability and education, but football still has a long way to go."

'I regretted joining Man Utd from Arsenal – I wanted to rip up my contract and go back'

Alexis Sanchez possessed a hero status at Arsenal before his transfer to Manchester United, which the Chilean admitted he instantly regretted Alexis Sanchez admitted that he was prepared to rip up his Manchester United deal in order to return to Arsenal after just his first Red Devils training session. The Chilean spent three-and-a-half years in north London and accrued an impressive 80 goals and 44 assists in 160 games for the Gunners. ‌ Having established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League after a three-year stint at Barcelona, where he won everything but the Champions League, then-United boss Jose Mourinho came calling in 2018. ‌ In what was a rare transfer situation, United and Arsenal - who clash on Sunday in their first Premier League game of the season -opted to complete a swap deal, with Sanchez moving to Manchester, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the opposite direction in January 2018. ‌ Prior to the move being completed, Sanchez had scored seven goals in 19 league games, a relatively slow start for the winger, given that he had netted 24 goals the season before. In a devastating drop-off in form, Sanchez scored just two more league goals for the rest of the season. He ended his first six months as a Red Devil with three goals in 18 games across all competitions. Speaking in 2020, Sanchez admitted he was initially positive about becoming a United player but those thoughts were swiftly dashed after just one training session. "I accepted the opportunity to go to United, it felt tempting, and it was something good for me," he said. "I liked this club a lot when I was a kid. Eventually, I signed, but I didn't ask for information on what was happening inside the club. Sometimes there are things that you don't realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things. "After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent, 'Can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?' They laughed. I told them there was something that didn't sit right, it didn't seem good. But I had already signed; I was already there. After the first few months, I carried on having the same feeling. We weren't united as a team in that moment." ‌ Sanchez's sophomore season at United, which was also his last, was even worse than his debut campaign. He managed just one league goal in 20 games and was resigned to a bench role for much of the season. After being dropped for an away trip to West Ham because he failed to score in the first six league games of the season, Sanchez said Mourinho's decision to relegate him dented his confidence. ‌ "In a game with West Ham, I wasn't picked," Sanchez continued. "That had never happened to me as a player. It bothered me, and I said it couldn't be possible. "To go from being one of the best in the Premier League to not playing in five months. I came to my house, and I was very sad. The next day, I trained in a double shift because I love what I do." United chiefs called time on the failed experiment as Sanchez was sent out on loan to Inter Milan in 2019 before making the switch permanent a year later. He's since turned out for Marseille before returning to Inter in 2023 for just a season as he secured a return to fellow Serie A side Udinese, the first European club he played for after leaving his homeland.
