Michelin comes to Quebec, but who's footing the bill?
The Michelin Guide has landed in Quebec for the first time, awarding stars to restaurants across the province and putting its chefs on the global culinary map.
Unveiled Thursday, the Michelin Guide Québec marks the third Canadian edition after Toronto and Vancouver and the first to cover an entire province.
The guide, known for its anonymous inspections and tiered star system, also hands out Bib Gourmands for good value and Green Stars for sustainable gastronomy.
But while the inspectors operate in secrecy, so too do many of the financial details behind the guide's arrival.
Who's funding the guide?
In its initial announcement, Michelin named the Alliance de l'industrie touristique du Québec as its official destination partner, a non-profit organization largely funded by the Quebec and federal governments. The Alliance operates under the public-facing Bonjour Québec brand.
Around the world, governments and tourism boards will often contribute funding to bring the Michelin Guide to new regions.
According to the Alliance, six additional organizations are financially supporting the guide's marketing over the next three years: Tourisme Montréal, the City of Montreal, Montréal Centre-Ville, Destination Québec cité, the City of Quebec, and Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED).
The total value of the partnership has not been disclosed. Sébastian Benedict, vice-president of public communications at the Alliance, said confidentiality clauses in its contract with Michelin prevent full disclosure.
That approach mirrors what happened in other Canadian cities. The cost of bringing Michelin to both Toronto and Vancouver also remains undisclosed. One rumour reported by the Vancouver Sun suggested Vancouver's deal cost $5 million, but this has been denied by officials.
However, some figures have been made public in Quebec. The City of Montreal told The Gazette it is contributing $300,000, while CED is providing $450,000 to the Alliance.
The Alliance said the funds will be used to promote Quebec's culinary scene internationally.
Will stars fuel tourism?
A 2024 survey by Quebec's tourism ministry found that 70 per cent of prospective summer visitors were interested in the Michelin Guide.
Michelin's international director, Gwendal Poullennec, said the guide would 'shine a light' on Quebec's culinary heritage, calling the province a 'rich multicultural mosaic.'

Statement by Minister MacDonald following meeting with representatives from the Government of Saskatchewan and canola industry leaders
OTTAWA, ON, /CNW/ - The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food issued the following statement after meeting with representatives from the Government of Saskatchewan and leaders from the Canadian canola sector: "Today, along with my colleagues the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development), and the Honourable Kody Blois, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, I had the opportunity to meet with Premier Scott Moe, Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison, Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding and key canola industry stakeholders and exporters to discuss the challenges faced by the canola sector, including the recent preliminary anti-dumping duty imposed by China on imports of canola seed from Canada. "Earlier this month, China announced a preliminary anti-dumping duty on imports of canola seed from Canada of 75.8%, which entered into force on August 14, 2025. This was in addition to existing trade measures resulting from China's anti-discrimination investigation, including the 100% tariffs on Canadian canola oil and meal. Our hard-working producers provide world-class canola products to Canadians and international trading partners and the Government of Canada is profoundly disappointed with China's announcement. "At today's meeting, we agreed on the importance of working together to ensure fair market access for the canola industry and engaging in constructive dialogue with Chinese officials to address each other's respective trade concerns. Our discussion also touched on support options for producers, including the government's suite of business risk management (BRM) programs and how Canada is developing a comprehensive industrial strategy to help businesses develop new export opportunities in international markets. "Canola is one of our most valuable agricultural exports and an important driver of the Canadian economy. We are steadfast in our commitment to defend and diversify Canadian trade and we will stand shoulder to shoulder in our support for Canada's hard-working canola producers, workers and exporters." Quick facts Canola is Canada's second-largest acreage crop, with over 21 million acres produced annually. Canola seed production in Canada generated $12.9 billion in farm cash receipts in 2024, making it the most valuable principal field crop. China is the largest export market for Canadian canola seed, representing 67% of total canola seed exports and totaling 5.9 million tonnes in 2024, worth approximately $4 billion. Carney and Trump speak for the first time since blowing past trade deal deadline
Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke to his U.S. counterpart by phone Thursday — the first time the leaders have spoken since the two sides failed to reach a deal on a trade agreement earlier this month. According to a short readout from the Prime Minister's Office, Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed current trade challenges, opportunities and shared priorities in what officials described as a productive and wide-ranging conversation. Carney raised establishing a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S., the PMO said. The two leaders also discussed how to build on President Trump's leadership to support long-term peace and security for Ukraine and Europe — an apparent reference to the U.S. effort to cobble together support from allies to help protect Ukraine from Russia through security guarantees, if those two countries can reach a peace deal. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington early on Thursday to discuss Ukraine. Photo: AP Photo / Cliff Owen A spokesperson for Carney said the prime minister initiated the call with Trump. Canada and the U.S. have been locked in a trade war since Trump slapped tariffs on Canadian goods earlier this year to supposedly spur a crackdown on drugs at the border. The border-related tariff, which Trump raised to 35 per cent at the end of July (new window), applies to virtually all Canadian exports to the U.S. that are not compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). There's also a lower rate for energy products and potash. There is no evidence Canada is a major supplier of drugs like fentanyl (new window). In fact, last year, Canadian officials nabbed more drugs coming from the U.S. (new window) than what the Americans captured coming in from Canada. In addition to the border-related tariffs, Trump has levied punishing section 232 tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, automobiles and copper, levies that have caused economic dislocation on both sides of the border. On the sidelines of the G7 summit Canada hosted in Kananaskis, Alta., earlier this summer, both Carney and Trump agreed to reach some sort of trade deal by late July — it was later pushed back to Aug. 1 — but failed to come to terms on a mutually agreeable pact. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the government wasn't willing to accept a bad deal from the Americans. We have always said that we would not accept just any agreement. We would accept an agreement that was in the interests of workers in the Canadian economy. And at the end of the day, that agreement was not yet in sight, LeBlanc said after the Aug. 1 deadline. At the time, a White House official told CBC News a deal was not in hand because Canada has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of seriousness in trade discussions as it relates to removing trade barriers. Trump has repeatedly railed against Canada's system of supply management for some agricultural products like dairy.

Set to open in November, the retail space replaces the cosmetics and skin care company's previous location that shuttered in the shopping mall in March. It marks the third The Body Shop Canada location to open this year. 'This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter,' said Michael Roden, president of The Body Shop Canada. The planned reopening in Vancouver was made public in a press release sharing the new direction charted by the company's Canadian ownership, Serruya Private Equity. Founded in 1976 by Dame Anita Roddick, The Body Shop is headquartered in London, U.K. Amid financial struggles in 2024, the company shuttered close to half of its stores in that country and closed all of its outposts in the U.S. The Canadian operations were sold to the Markham, Ont. based private equity firm last December. Following the takeover, its Canadian operations underwent an aggressive restructuring that saw the closure of more than 30 stores across Canada. The Body Shop Canada currently operates 64 stores nationwide. The downtown Vancouver location is one of several store openings planned for the company as part of a 'focused strategy' to expand its Canadian retail footprint. Roden, who previously held the position of CEO of Thrifty's Inc. and joined The Body Shop in June, said it's a 'new era' for the business. 'Our focus is on creating immersive experiences, both in-store and online, that reignite passion for the brand and welcome the next generation of customers,' he said in the release. The ownership will also look to introduce new product collections into the Canadian market, no say products will continue to be manufactured and developed in Europe. 'Being Canadian-owned allows The Body Shop Canada to move with greater agility, tailoring our approach to meet the values and expectations of Canadian consumers,' said Roden. The website for Serruya Private Equity lists car dealerships, restaurants and hotels among its other business investments.
