Rs 2.5cr sanctioned for cleaning of Sukhna Choe in Zirakpur ahead of monsoon

1 2 Mohali: In a timely move to prevent flooding during the upcoming monsoon season, the Mohali administration has sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore for the cleaning and re-sectioning of Sukhna Choe (rivulet) in Zirakpur area. The work orders have been cleared by deputy commissioner Komal Mittal, with the target of completing the project before the onset of the rains. The cleaning project will be jointly executed by the municipal council (MC), public works department (PWD), drainage department, and the municipal engineering wing. The rivulet, which carries excess stormwater from Sukhna Lake and merges with the Ghaggar River at Bhankharpur, has been facing severe siltation issues that hinder water flow and increase the risk of flooding in Baltana and surrounding areas. "We are getting Sukhna Choe cleaned for Rs 2.5 crore in collaboration with multiple departments. Instructions have been issued for immediate commencement and day-to-day monitoring of the work to ensure completion on a war footing," said DC Komal Mittal during a review meeting. Silt buildup of nearly 6–7 feet has been identified in the rivulet bed, reducing its water-carrying capacity and posing a serious threat to nearby residential areas. The low embankments and unchecked wild growth have also blocked the natural flow, which previously resulted in flash floods. Notably, in Aug 2020, a sudden release of water from Sukhna Lake caused massive flooding in Baltana, submerging a police post under 8-10 feet of water and damaging marriage palaces, municipal parks, milk dairies, and the local cremation ground. Highlighting the urgency of the work, the DC directed the executive engineer, drainage-cum-mining and geology division, to ensure the re-sectioning and cleaning are completed without delay. The Sukhna Choe can carry 6,000–7,000 cusecs of water, but only if restored to its original depth and width. This is the first time such a comprehensive cleaning and flood-prevention project is being undertaken for Sukhna Choe, marking a proactive approach by the district administration to avert a repeat of past disasters.

Demand falls short of supply as Ludh stares at a long, dry spell

Ludhiana: With temperatures already going well past the 40°C-mark, the demand for water supply has shot up, and MC officials have asked the staff to meet the requirements of the city. With demand falling short of supply, residents are calling for issuing challans to those found wasting water. MC is also planning to form a committee to check if the existing tubewells are actually required in the area concerned or not, as residents have also been demanding more tubewells. The city is already heavily dependent on the tubewells for its water supply. There are more than 1,000 tubewells in the city. With each passing year, the groundwater level is going down. As water supply from the canal remains a distant reality, officials have been requesting residents to use water judiciously. MC officials said they floated tenders for the installation of new tubewells in many areas reeling under water scarcity over the past few days. "Challaning drives should be conducted on a regular basis so that residents think twice before wasting water. But, along with this, awareness is equally important," said Rajan Malhotra, a resident of Kitchlu Nagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ative o software antivírus do seu computador Clique aqui Undo Another resident, Sakshi Verma from Civil Lines, said, "In some localities, the pressure is so low that it becomes difficult to get water in the mornings and evenings. In other areas, people keep on wasting water by washing their cars or floors. " When contacted, mayor Inderjit Kaur said, "We are getting requests from councillors for more tubewells as the demand has increased due to the summer season. In some areas, the water pressure also goes down, so a technical committee will be formed to check whether a tubewell is required there or not."
