Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Federal Government Administrative Complex (KPKPS) achieved a milestone by becoming the first Federal Government building in the State to operate on large-scale green solar energy. Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa said the completed project will deliver substantial savings in electricity costs while promoting sustainable solar energy usage throughout Sabah. 'This is a major achievement in government building management landscape,' Rosli said during the project handover ceremony on Tuesday. 'With the completion of the 1-Megawatt solar system installation, the KPKPS has become the first Federal Government building in Sabah to utilise green solar energy at this scale,' he said. The project was realised through a one-off allocation of RM6 million from the Ministry of Economy, channelled through the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority. The Works Ministry's Facilities Management Division served as the implementing agency, while field implementation was handled by concessionaire Kombinasi Saudagar Sdn Bhd. The eight-month installation, which began in October 2024, is expected to generate impressive financial returns. The system is projected to reduce monthly electricity bills by up to RM71,000, contributing to total savings of RM4.26 million over five years. Beyond cost savings, the project significantly contributes to Malaysia's environmental goals. Rosli said the initiative aligns with the Government's Renewable Energy Technology Policy and aims to reduce carbon footprint while supporting national development toward a greener, cleaner and more resilient future. 'The design is not only practical but also shows our commitment to environmentally friendly technology. 'This investment in green technology proves that sustainable approaches can generate viable economic returns,' he said. The ceremony was also attended by Sabah Oil & Gas Development Corporation Director Datuk Dr Roland Chia Ming Shen and Works Ministry's Facilities Management Division Secretary Helene Remeo. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Bernas invites visitors to understand its role
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: David Thien Text Size: According to Bernas' spokesman, 'A key highlight this year is the success of the SMART Large-Scale Paddy Field (SMART SBB) Programme, Ala Sekinchan (Selangor) Model in Kota Belud, launched in 2022 in close collaboration with state and federal agencies. Kota Kinabalu: Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas) invites visitors to its interactive booth at the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 now being held at Level 4, Sipadan Convention Hall of the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) from Aug 1-3, 2025. Visitors will see first-hand how rice – a staple on every table, is part of a bigger story of food security, farmer empowerment and national resilience. According to Bernas' spokesman, 'A key highlight this year is the success of the SMART Large-Scale Paddy Field (SMART SBB) Programme, Ala Sekinchan (Selangor) Model in Kota Belud, launched in 2022 in close collaboration with state and federal agencies. 'In the first season of 2025, Kampung Jawi-Jawi recorded a 21pc yield increase, rising from 3.79 MT/Ha to 4.59 MT/Ha and this directly improved farmer income and strengthened Sabah's domestic rice production. 'Now expanded to 10 locations across Kota Belud, the programme engages over 80 active farmers, combining modern practices, training, financial support and mechanisation to transform traditional farming and uplift rural livelihoods. 'As the government's strategic partner in food security, Bernas is not just managing rice imports but also helping transform the local paddy industry through innovation, investment, and close engagement with farming communities,' he said. 'Food security begins with awareness. When people understand what goes into producing a bowl of rice, they will value it more and that creates national resilience.' Visitors to the Bernas booth can look forward to a variety of fun and engaging activities for all ages, including a unique Rice Sensory Experience that highlights the beauty and diversity of Malaysian rice varieties, and a 'Guess the Weight of Rice' contest, where two lucky winners will receive a year's supply of rice. In 2022, Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim publicly criticised Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar over Bernas' rice import monopoly and its impact on padi farmers; the issue was resolved when Syed Mokhtar agreed to allocate RM90 million from Bernas' profits to support farmers, satisfying government demands without altering Bernas' monopoly. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Unity key to strength, prosperity: Chief Minister
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 Text Size: Hajiji, accompanied by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, flagging off the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang at the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 launch ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: The unity of the diverse races and religions in Sabah is the key to the State's strength and prosperity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He urged all citizens to continue preserving the harmony enjoyed today as the most valuable legacy for future generations. 'Unity in diversity is Sabah's true strength. It is not a weakness, rather it is a uniqueness that we should be proud of and safeguard,' he said when launching the National Month, Sabah Day and Fly the Flag Campaign 2025 at The Magellan Sutera Resort, here, Friday. The Chief Minister said every individual is responsible for making places like schools, workplaces, business premises, places of worship and digital platforms to strengthen understanding, rather than sowing division. On the progress of Sabah's development, he said the achievements of the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 as of May 2025 showed encouraging success, with an average implementation rate reaching 94 per cent of the 467 initiatives planned. 'Among sectors that continue to be prioritised are agriculture, industry and tourism, along with efforts to enhance human capital, the peoples' wellbeing, infrastructure networks and environmental sustainability,' he said. Hajiji said various forms of assistance have also been provided to the people, including access to education and introducing the Sabah People's Protection Insurance Scheme that offers comprehensive benefits to citizens. He also urged all segments of society to fly the Jalur Gemilang everywhere, as a symbol of loyalty and love for the nation. 'Today's launch is not just a symbolic event, but a call for us to understand the true meaning of independence - not just freedom from colonisation, but also freedom from poverty and division,' he said. The National Day and Sabah Day celebration, held every August, is a historic moment that reminds the people of the struggle of their forefathers in defending the homeland and the dignity of the nation. 'As Malaysians in Sabah, we have a great responsibility to safeguard the blessings of independence and continue this legacy of struggle,' said Hajiji. The launching event was marked by the handing over of Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags to State and Federal Government departments and agencies, representatives of associations and the launch of the Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
