Federal-Sabah ties must be close, built on mutual trust
KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger ties between the federal government and Sabah, grounded in mutual trust and aimed at advancing the state's development and protecting the welfare of its people.
Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, said Sabah should follow Sarawak's example, where closer federal-state cooperation has shown tangible benefits.
He reiterated Putrajaya's commitment to working with Sabah's leadership on governance and development, to further safeguard the state's interests and wellbeing.
'The federal government has long prioritised Sabah's needs. This isn't about state elections, it's about responsibility,' he told reporters after meeting Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders on Thursday night.
Anwar added that the federal government has consistently shown concern for Sabah's needs, and the issue goes beyond electoral considerations.
Also present were Sabah PH chairman Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also president of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), PKR Sabah State Leadership Council (MPN) chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmu, and Sabah DAP chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.
Anwar said that under his administration, the Federal Government had demonstrated a strong commitment to implementing the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) through a committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, along with ministers from Sabah and Sarawak.
He said that as a result of that determination, nine key matters which were delayed for decades had been successfully resolved, and even more complex issues such as those concerning oil affairs had been addressed.
'So we propose the same principle so that more assured revenue for Sabah can be achieved. Not misused - for me, continuity and governance are the priorities, not leaders scrambling for wealth for themselves.
'But to use the opportunity to defend the fate of the people. This is the government that must be upheld and supported for our people,' he said.
Anwar said the Federal government has proven its commitment to defending Sabah's rights, especially in addressing the issue of the Sulu group's claim, which was successfully repelled and overcome, thus upholding the dignity of the state as part of Malaysia.
'We gave our full commitment in the Cabinet meeting, and even in the recent ASEAN summit, we managed to ensure that Sabah's issues are always prioritised,' he said.
Asked about PH's cooperation strategy in the Sabah State Election (PRN), Anwar, who is also PH Chairman, said that Sabah PH is currently holding discussions with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN).
'Let Sabah PH decide; they are negotiating with GRS and negotiating with Sabah BN. These Sabah PH leaders will come forward and coordinate. Right now, it seems that all meetings are progressing, and we don't anticipate any problems,' he said.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Political analysts are not surprised by Tengku Zafrul Aziz's decision to ditch Umno in hopes of joining PKR, but one pundit expects the senator to flop in Anwar Ibrahim's party as well. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Tengku Zafrul was given a lot of opportunities on a silver platter in Umno, especially since he had the support of party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. 'I don't think he will survive in PKR even though he will most probably get the full backing of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim. 'He couldn't survive Umno's politicking even with Zahid's backing, what more PKR?' he told FMT. Even the likes of Rafizi Ramli found it difficult, Azmi said, referring to the former PKR deputy president who was defeated in his re-election bid last week, and resigned from the Cabinet. Azmi believed that Anwar is in a 'very difficult' position because of the potential animosity he would create with Umno if he were to accept Tengku Zafrul into PKR. He said Anwar should weigh the pros and cons carefully, particularly whether or not the former Kota Raja Umno chief offered any added value to PKR. 'I personally don't think (Tengku Zafrul does),' he said. 'He's considered an outsider and giving him a chance to be an election candidate for PKR in the future would create turmoil within PKR. 'He failed to build grassroots support in Umno and he will face the same struggle in PKR. He just doesn't have grassroots support. 'I think he will be accepted into PKR, but it won't help Tengku Zafrul's political career much.' Despite being an Umno member since 1997, the former CIMB Group CEO was widely seen as a technocrat when appointed as finance minister in Muhyiddin Yassin's Cabinet in March 2020, a role he retained in Ismail Sabri Yaakob's government. It was only in the lead-up to the 2022 general election that Tengku Zafrul's Umno membership came to light, as he was fielded, but lost, in the contest for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat. After joining Anwar's Cabinet as trade minister, he was elected an Umno Supreme Council member and also the head of the Kota Raja Umno division. He resigned as Selangor Umno treasurer in April last year, citing resistance to positive change, before speculation of his exit from Umno started swirling in December. 'The timing is right' James Chin of the University of Tasmania believed that Tengku Zafrul's announcement yesterday caught neither PKR nor Umno by surprise, saying the timing was appropriate since PKR had just completed its internal elections. 'Since his senatorship can't be renewed, his best chance to continue to serve in government is to stand as a candidate in GE16. And since he thinks PKR is a better bet, now is the best time to go in, (after the PKR elections and) two years before GE16.'

PKR to consider unity govt partners' input on Tengku Zafrul's membership bid
PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said Tengku Zafrul Aziz's application, if accepted, will go through the central leadership council. PETALING JAYA : PKR will consider input from grassroots members and its partners in the unity government when evaluating any membership application, including one from Tengku Zafrul Aziz, says party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Fuziah said the party has not received any official application from Tengku Zafrul despite his statement on social media indicating his intention to join PKR. 'For the record, all applications to join PKR must be submitted online,' she said in a statement today. 'Each application will go through the usual process. Once submitted online, it will be processed and tabled at a central leadership council (MPP) meeting. 'The application will be duly considered before a decision is made, taking into account various perspectives, including those of our partners in the unity government and opinions from the grassroots.' Tengku Zafrul, the current investment, trade and industry minister, had announced his resignation from Umno and said he would be applying to join PKR, citing 'compatibility and suitability'. He was previously an Umno Supreme Council member and head of the Kota Raja Umno division. Tengku Zafrul was appointed as a senator and minister under the administrations of Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Anwar Ibrahim. He contested the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in the last general election, but did not win. Fuziah also extended well wishes to Tengku Zafrul, who is set to perform the hajj pilgrimage this season. 'PKR prays for his safe journey and return,' she said in the same statement.

Asean-US meeting strengthens regional defence cooperation, says Khaled Nordin
SINGAPORE: The multilateral meeting between Asean defence ministers, Timor-Leste, and United States Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth on Friday is expected to further strengthen regional defence cooperation, said Malaysia's Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue here on Friday. "The meeting served as a platform for Asean countries to exchange views on regional security challenges, especially in the Indo-Pacific, and to explore opportunities to strengthen defence cooperation with the United States," Khaled shared in a Facebook post. He also shared Malaysia's perspective as the current Asean Chair, highlighting two major regional issues — the Myanmar crisis and the South China Sea situation — during his meeting with Hegseth. "Solutions to these two critical issues must be led and driven by Asean through an Asean-led and Asean-driven framework," he said. Khaled also stressed the importance of all parties upholding Asean's core values and principles to ensure the continued security, sovereignty, and stability of the region. Meanwhile, during the meeting, Hegseth highlighted common security challenges and reaffirmed the US' strong commitment to the region, according to a statement by Singapore's Defence Ministry. He said that the US believed in practical cooperation and strong partnerships underpinned by shared values. The US would continue its engagement with the Southeast Asia region and enhance defence cooperation with Asean countries, including through the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus). Hegseth also raised cybersecurity as a key emerging domain for Asean-US cooperation, such as through the ADMM Cybersecurity and Information Centre of Excellence (ACICE).
