Uttarakhand plans crackdown on ‘fake saints' who ‘tarnish image of Sanatan Dharma'
Dhami has directed the initiation of Operation Kalanemi against those posing as saints and committing, the office of the CM said in a communication. 'Those exploiting Sanatan Dharma for deceit and manipulating people's faith will not be spared'. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce this campaign.
The announcement comes during the model code of conduct as the state goes for panchayat elections with polling to be held in two phases on July 24 and 28, and the counting of votes on July 31. The state is also preparing for Kanwar Yatra and has been seeing an influx of devotees as the yatra begins on Friday.
Dhami claimed that in recent times, several cases have emerged in the state where antisocial elements, posing as saints, have been found cheating people, especially women.
'In view of these incidents, the Chief Minister has instructed authorities to begin Operation Kalanemi against such individuals. Such actions not only hurt the religious sentiments of people but also damage social harmony and the image of Sanatan Dharma. Strict action will be taken against anyone, regardless of religion, found involved in such acts,' the communication said.
Citing the Hindu mythology, he further said that just as Kalanemi, who is considered a demon, 'once tried to deceive people by taking the form of a saint, today, too many such 'Kalanemis' are active in society, committing crimes under religious disguise'. 'The state government is fully committed to safeguarding public sentiments, preserving the dignity of Sanatan culture, and maintaining social harmony. No one spreading deceit in the name of faith will be spared under any circumstances,' he added.
Calling Uttarakhand the land of gods, Devbhoomi, he said: 'The people here are innocent and simple by nature. Unfortunately, some antisocial elements are taking advantage of this. The police and administration have been instructed to identify such elements and initiate Operation Kalanemi to arrest them'.
Earlier, the government had issued an order, directing vendors of food stalls to display their licences prominently.

US designates TRF, which claimed responsibility for Pahalgam attack, as terror group
The United States on Thursday designated The Resistance Front, which claimed responsibility for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, as a foreign terror group. The US State Department said that it had added TRF to its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists. TRF is an affiliate of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, according to the Indian government. Lashkar-e-Taiba and all its affiliates, including TRF, are designated terror outfits in India under the 1967 Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. On May 7, New Delhi had said that TRF had claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack. The US State Department said that besides Pahalgam, TRF had claimed responsibility for several terror attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024. 'These actions taken by the Department of State demonstrates the Trump administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism and enforcing President [Donald] Trump's call for justice for the Pahalgam attack,' the department said. The US also maintained the foreign terror group designation given to the Lashkar-e-Taiba. In response to the Pahalgam attack, India on May 7 launched military strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what New Delhi claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India had exercised its right to retaliate responsibly to the Pahalgam attack, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said, adding that there were indications of further impending attacks against the country. Misri had said that the Pahalgam attack was driven by the terrorists' objective to disrupt normalcy returning to Jammu and Kashmir and hurt the booming tourism industry. The attack was also aimed at provoking communal discord in India, he added. The foreign secretary said that Pakistan had not taken clear steps to act against terrorists in its territory and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Pakistani military had retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed. On May 10, India and Pakistan reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following a four-day conflict.

Preventing SC community from entering temples can't be allowed: Madras High Court
CHENNAI: Affirming that every Hindu irrespective of caste or sect is entitled to enter into any temple, the Madras HC said preventing scheduled caste community from entering temples cannot be permitted in the country which is governed by the rule of law. 'Irrespective of the caste or community of the devotees, they must be permitted to offer prayers to god. That apart, preventing persons from offering prayers on the basis that they belong to SC community, is an affront to the dignity of persons who are discriminated based on their caste. This can never be permitted in a country, which is governed by the rule of law,' said Justice N Anand Venkatesh in an order passed on Thursday. He noted that section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Temple Entry Authorisation Act, 1947, makes it abundantly clear that notwithstanding any law, custom or usage to the contrary, every Hindu irrespective of the caste or section shall be entitled to enter any Hindu temple and offer worship therein. If they are restricted, it will amount to an actionable wrong/offence. This act came into force after a long struggle by many leaders who wanted to ensure no caste discrimination. The Act was brought into force as a policy taken by the state government to remove the disabilities imposed on certain classes of Hindus against entry into Hindu temples in the state, he pointed out. Justice Venkatesh made the observations while issuing orders to the authorities of the Ariyalur district including the collector to take action to ensure SC community persons are not prevented from entering into the Puthukudi Ayyanar Temple in Udaiyarpalayam for worship and do the rituals. The order was issued on the petition filed by A Venkatesan who alleged his community is prevented from entering into the temple for worship. He wanted directions to the authorities to allow them to worship during the car festival from July 16 to 31.

Tension in Karur shrine as board allowing entry of all communities removed
KARUR: Tension prevailed in Chinnatharapuram on Thursday after a section of caste Hindu people removed a notice board, installed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, in front of a Mariyamman temple in the village. The notice board, which was placed as per a court order, states that people from all communities, regardless of caste, are permitted to worship and participate in temple rituals. It also warned that criminal action would be taken against anyone who attempts to prevent devotees from offering prayers at the temple. According to police, the temple is under the HR&CE department since 1973. Members of both SC and MBC communities have been participating in pujas and temple rituals. However, due to a dispute over some issues in 2018, both groups approached the court. The matter is pending. During a hearing on July 15, the court instructed HR&CE officials to take steps to resume worship at the temple and to display a notice board announcing that all communities are allowed to offer prayers. As per the direction, officials placed the notice board in front of the temple. Upon knowing this, a group of people from MBC community assembled in front of the temple on Thursday. Aravakurichi Tahsildar Mahendran, additional superintendent of police Prabakaran, Aravakurichi DSP Abdul Kapoor and local police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the crowd. Despite their efforts, the crowd removed the notice board. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged with Chinnatharapuram police and they registered a case.
