Legendary Edinburgh chippies remembered by locals ahead of National Fish & Chip Day
Ahead of National Fish & Day 2025 (Friday, June 6), we asked Edinburgh residents for their memories of the city's famous Brattisani's chippies. Did you know with a Digital Subscription to Edinburgh News, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... There's legendary institutions – and there's Brattisani's fish and chip shops. It's a story which begins well over a century ago. The original Brattisani's, on Church Lane in Stockbridge, was opened in 1889 by Giuseppe Brattisani, who was part of the first wave of Italian families to settle in the city, after immigrating from Parma in the 1870s. When Giuseppe enlisted with the Italian army during the First World War, his wife took over the running of the chippy. Mercifully, he survived the war, and on returning to Edinburgh decided to open a new fish and chip shop – the Deep Sea, on Union Place, which he later sold to the Crolla family. After the demolition of Union Place in 1970, the Deep Sea moved to Antigua Street, where it still serves fish and chips to this day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Next to take over the family business was Giuseppe's son, Joseph, who earned the nickname of 'Mr Chips'. At one time or another, he ran five restaurants in Auld Reekie. His sons, Charles and Joe, would then follow in their father's footsteps. Brattisani's chippies were loved by generations of families in Edinburgh. Charles Brattisani opened his first shop in 1961, lending the family name to what became a hugely-popular chippy on Henderson Row. Joe, meanwhile ran another thriving fish and chip shop on Brougham Place in Tollcross. In 1966 and 1970 respectively, the brothers Brattisani opened branches in Haymarket and Newington. Both those chippies survived for over three decades, and arguably the most famous of all the Brattisani-run emporiums. The branch on Newington Road, in particular, is the stuff of local legend. For many people brought up in the city, no hard day's swim at the Royal Commonwealth (Commie) Pool was complete without a visit to this chippy, which was memorable for its red seating booths. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Sadly, all good things must come to an end. The Haymarket chippy shut its doors in 2002, with the Newington branch serving its last fish supper just two years later. It's a case of gone but never forgotten for Edinburgh residents. We asked our readers for memories of Brattisani's famous chippies – and hundreds of you responded. Below are some of those recollections. David Turnbull wrote: 'My dad told us he was taking us out for a meal. Mum thought it would be somewhere posh so we all got dressed up - he took us to Brattisani's at Haymarket. Fish suppers, bread and butter and a pot of tea – and we loved it.' Lesley Gallier recalled: 'Starting my nursing training we stayed in the nurses home round the corner from there in Newington. 1977. We never went hungry . Amazing. Happy days.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scott Wilson said: '32p child bus fare from Gracie to Newington for the Commie, then Brattisanis after!' Dougie Ewart wrote: 'Used to come down from the Commy pool with all my mates and then into Brattisani's for a chippy. I always got sausages and they would give you a few chips if you got a single, with salt & sauce. While your mates who ordered, sometimes you would miss the bus. But it would stop at traffic lights, and you had to run over the road, bolt to the traffic lights, get over the road, and catch it as it stopped around the corner. Laughing as we ran along the road with supper in hand trying to catch the bus... great chippy great times.' Moira F Gray remembered: 'Brattisani's at Haymarket after ice skating at Murrayfield on a Friday night. Best ever chippy! Neil Tomlinson said: 'I would always go there after swimming, I also took my daughter once and she listened to some stories. I also loved the tomato chippy sauce on my chips.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Elizabeth Stanton recalled: Coming out of the Commonwealth Pool starving and heading straight for the best chippy ever. Sitting on the bus eating our supper heading home. Years later, taking our children and sitting in the booths reminiscing.' Last, but not least, Samantha Brattisani chipped in with some kind words for Evening News readers, saying: 'It was my dad, Joe Brattisani, who owned the shop. Dad and family (Maria, Eric, Charles and George Brattisani) that ran the shops for many years. Everyone I know, including me, loved going to the Commonwealth Pool then to the Newington chippy. That has never been forgotten – thanks to all that take the time to comment.'

Plenty of Scottish heroics in May, both home and abroad
Welcome to our new free newsletter celebrating all that is going well in Scotland! Subscribe using the banner above. I THINK we could all learn a thing or two from Hiroshi Suzuki. The Japanese ambassador to the UK visited Scotland in May, including official meetings with the First Minister and the Presiding Office. But he also took to some tourist hotspots in Edinburgh, and partook in some Scottish delicacies, joking at one point that he had eaten some Tunnock's teacakes "for breakfast". In a video posted on social media, he could also be seen trying Haggis and a dram of whisky, which he said he "enjoyed". "It's fantastic!" he added, with a thumbs up to the camera. It's Suzuki's boundless optimism that has made him a viral social media star. And perhaps we can all take a leaf out of that book. And so, on that note, our positive stories in Scotland in May. First up, I always love to see Scots thriving abroad. And last month, you can look no further than footballer Scott McTominay (below). The Scotland international is a literal hero in Naples after his instrumental role in helping Napoli FC to their fourth ever Serie A title. Crowned as the whole league's player of the season, the streets of Naples were literally draped in saltires and graffiti of the man they now call 'McFratm' – or McBro. He even met the pope (above)! On the more cultural side, a Scottish director's film set during the Highland Clearances has also made waves at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Ian Gordon, from Fife, travelled to the internationally renowned film festival in France to promote his fantasy adventure movie, The Gudeman, where he learnt to build animatronic 'creatures' from scratch. And people working in the film industry from around the world were blown away at the festival by the dramatic scenery of the Highlands, which provides the backdrop for his adventure. As they should! I was also pleased to hear Edinburgh is now home to Europe's first museum of contemporary Palestinian art. The Palestine Museum in Scotland features work from a range of Palestinian artists showcasing paintings, sculptures and installations. The museum aims to counteract the 'dehumanisation' of the Palestinian people by illustrating their culture and narrative through art. I mentioned it will be opening in my last newsletter but it is now open for business. I am yet to visit but my colleague, Laura, said it was deeply moving. In business news, the UK's only female-founded wave energy company has secured more than half a million in funding to scale up its technology. Aberdeen-based ZOEX secured £531,000 in funding including investment from Equity Gap, one of Scotland's leading angel investment syndicates, Strathclyde University and Scottish Enterprise. Founded by entrepreneur, CEO Ash Penley (above), ZOEX aims to replace diesel generators with "clean, cost-effective wave power". While I understand Scotland's fishing industry isn't best pleased by the new UK-EU deal governing post-Brexit arrangements, I was heartened to see some positive movements. For example, while a return to freedom of movement has frustratingly been ruled out by Labour, they have agreed to look at a limited scheme aimed at young people. The UK rejoining the Erasmus+ scheme, which sees students do part of their degree at an institution abroad, is also floated in the deal. If finalised, this would be a win for young Scots. If there's anything you think should be included, please don't hesitate to ping me an email:
