Orlando Pirates turn to Ouaddou after Rulani talks collapse why
Orlando Pirates stunned fans on Monday by unveiling Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, despite recent talks with Rulani Mokwena. The club moved swiftly as their European pre-season tour looms, with their first fixture against Bolton Wanderers set for 11 July in Spain.
A source revealed that Mokwena remained a serious candidate, but negotiations hit a stumbling block that ultimately shifted the Buccaneers' plans.
While several reports believed a deal was nearing finalisation, Pirates opted for a different direction. A club stakeholder explained one of the major reasons behind the breakdown in talks.
'Rulani (Mokwena) wanted to bring in his own bench. That didn't work out. It is part of the reason for the change,' the source said.
This demand reportedly clashed with the club's internal structure. Prompting a rethink as the club pressed on with their search for a coach who fits their broader criteria. Respect remains between Mokwena and Pirates
Despite the failed negotiations, the relationship between Mokwena and the Pirates hierarchy remains respectful.
'There was interest in coach Mokwena from other clubs and it's believed that Pirates wanted to give him that chance. They found one [coach] who could suit their criteria,' the source noted.
Mokwena recently attracted interest from Pyramids FC, Yanga SC, and Zamalek, but he ruled himself out of contention for the Egyptian giants. However, the unfolding events at Orlando Pirates may have broader implications on where he lands next.
Ouaddou, who recently resigned from Marumo Gallants and was reportedly close to joining Chippa United. Now takes the reins at one of South Africa's most demanding clubs. His appointment marks a dramatic twist and has already triggered wide debate among fans and pundits.
'You know what was happening was a tricky situation. The club hierarchy made their decision and Rulani was not the one,' a source said.
Will Ouaddou be a success at Orlando Pirates?

Orlando Pirates news: Monnapule Saleng and Tshepang Moremi
Orlando Pirates have not yet addressed the future of their winger Monnapule Saleng. The talented 27-year-old has not played for the club in six months despite being fit. His last appearance was in December during the CAF Champions League group stage against Al Ahly. Sources indicate that Saleng's absence is due to a dispute regarding his salary. He is reportedly seeking a pay increase and an improved contract. Earlier this year, Saleng's parents told Sunday World that he is unhappy with his current earnings, which are estimated to be around R70,000 per month. The Bafana Bafana star feels that his salary does not reflect his contributions to the team. Although Saleng has been training with the club in recent months, his future at Orlando Pirates remains uncertain. The club has released several players but has yet to announce any new signings. However, there are rumours that Tshepang Moremi, who recently left AmaZulu, has signed with the Soweto giants and is expected to be announced as a new recruit during the pre-season. Regarding Pirates star Monnapule Saleng, he has been linked to a possible move to rivals Kaizer Chiefs. The Glamour Boys have also been rumoured to have signed two former Bucs players earlier this month. The real reason why Rulani Mokwena did not get the Pirates job
Rulani Mokwena was the hot favourite for the Orlando Pirates job; however, the Buccaneers announced Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing Jose Riveiro at the helm following his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure. Recently, Mokwena has been linked to teams like Pyramids FC, Yanga SC, and Zamalek, although he ruled himself out of contention for the latter Egyptian team. According Soccer Laduma , Pirates were keen to give Rulani a chance. 'There was interest in coach Mokwena from other clubs and it's believed that Pirates wanted to give him that chance and they were looking at other coaches as well who could suit their criteria and they found one,' a source told the publication. 'You know what was happening was a tricky situation. You recall I told you that only the hierarchy of the club was talking to Rulani? Then it came to light that they won't go for him. They had their own reasons why they had to look at other coaches. Yes, it's believed that the club hierarchy was talking to him but at the end of the day they(Pirates) made their decision and Rulani was not the one,' the second source added. Runners represent Giyani well
LIMPOPO – The Giyani Gallopers Athletics Club proudly represented their town at the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 8, with several members earning prestigious medals, even though no golds were claimed. Leading the pack was Vonani Chavalala, who completed the ultra-marathon in an impressive 7:41:30, earning a Bill Rowan medal. Close behind was fellow club runner Gift Mashavani, who also earned a Bill Rowan medal with a finishing time of 8:57:45. Among the women, Sibongile Makamu was the club's fastest female finisher, clocking in at 9:56:35. Just a second behind her was Aletta Ngoveni, finishing in 9:56:36. Chavalala reflected on the experience, saying, 'The race was tough. Around the 84km mark, I got excited seeing the downhill stretch and thought I could finish under seven and a half hours. But at 85km, the uphill section hit me hard. I suffered cramps and lost time, but I'm still happy with my performance; this was only my second Comrades.' Another standout from the club was Beryll Monakisi, who finished her race in 11:49:17. She received special recognition from Greater Tzaneen Mayor Gerson Molapisane during the recent homecoming ceremony for Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka. The mayor praised Monakisi for proudly representing the municipality at such a prestigious national event. This year's Comrades Marathon saw a strong showing from South African athletes. Tete Dijana secured his third victory, bouncing back from last year's fourteenth-place finish to win in 5:25:28. In the women's division, Gerda Steyn claimed her fourth title, finishing in 5:51:19.
