Arizona Cardinals ST coordinator Jeff Rodgers expects huge increase in kick returns

USA Todaya day ago

Arizona Cardinals ST coordinator Jeff Rodgers expects huge increase in kick returns "I would be shocked if the return rate is not 70-plus percent," Jeff Rodgers told reporters Tuesday.
After the NFL significantly changed how kickoffs were handled in 2024, a few small changes were made. Most notably, a touchback for kicking the ball out of the end zone will give the ball to the receiving team at the 35-yard line instead of the 30 like last season.
Arizona Cardinals special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Jeff Rodgers believes it will make a massive difference.
"I would be shocked if the return rate is not 70-plus percent," he told reporters before the Cardinals' first minicamp practice on Tuesday.
Last year, with the initial change, the kickoff return rate "only spiked from 20 to 30%" but it accomplished the goals the league wanted, a reduction of head injuries and in soft-tissue injuries.
Kickoffs had a few other changes, but those are more subtle, such as player placement and alignment before the kick.
Rodgers is pleased with the changes, as it will lead to more exciting football. For a while, it looked like the kickoff would be completely phased out. That is no longer the case.
"They want to play back in the game, and that's good for all of us," Rodgers said. "It's good for the players. It's going to make things more exciting...So you're talking about double the amount of competitive plays in my opinion, 100 more competitive plays per team per season. That's a lot like 50 more kickoffs are covering 50 more kickoff returns you're going to return. It'll change the game pretty good and we better get good at that stuff in a hurry."
Cardinals kick return specialist DeeJay Dallas averaged 30.6 yards on 15 kick returns and scored a touchdown. His touchdown was the first of the new kickoff style and one of only seven in the league.
We will see how much more this new change impacts the Cardinals in 2025.

What does Dennis Gardeck offer the Jaguars?

The Jaguars went from desperately needing a rotational edge rusher for years to having a surplus after the team signed both Emmanuel Ogbah and Dennis Gardeck. Gardeck, 30, has spent his entire career serving as the Cardinals' rotational piece. Now, after seven years in Arizona, Gardeck looks to join a talented group in Jacksonville. In his seven years, Gardeck has tallied 17.0 career sacks, 23 TFLs, and 156 combined tackles. Advertisement While Gardeck may not be piling on the sack numbers, there's a reason Arizona kept him around for so long. Of his 17 sacks, 13 of them came in just two seasons, seven in 2020 and six in 2023. Gardeck totaled three last season as well in just seven games played. >>> STREAM ACTION SPORTS JAX 24/7 LIVE <<< That said, Gardeck only played seven games in 2024. He did, however, rack up 42 pressures in 2023. His 42 pressures led the team, despite not being listed as a full-time starter. Gardeck's 17.9% pass-rush win rate ranked 13th among 98 qualifying edge rushers. Dennis Gardeck is solid outside of rushing the passer as well. In spite of not seeing full-time snaps, Gardeck's 27 defensive stops tied Travon Walker in 2023, according to ProFootballFocus. Advertisement Liam Coen spoke highly of Gardeck after the signing. He got to see Gardeck's impact firsthand during his time with the Rams. 'Yeah, just a ton of respect for the player competing against him two times a year in L.A. since 2018,' Coen said. 'Every time we would go play the Arizona Cardinals, he was on the game-wrecker board.' Coen continued, 'We would always kind of introduce the game wreckers to the players. And he was on there, whether it was originally for special teams, and then also for rushing the passer and creating some disruption. It just gives us somebody a little bit different kind of style rusher, special teams demon.' Not only do the Jaguars finally have that much-needed third edge-rusher to spare Josh Hines-Allen and Walker, they have a fourth now as well. Gardeck might not rack up double-digit sacks, but he allows the Jaguars to keep their two starters fresh without feeling pressured to keep them on the field. Advertisement It's icing on the cake that Gardeck is a special-teams ace as well. It's clear Jaguars' GM James Gladstone is never satisfied with the status quo and is always on the lookout for how he can make this Jaguars roster better. USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Deontay Burnett in focus

USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Deontay Burnett in focus The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 80 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look at former USC wide receiver Deontay Burnett. Position: Wide receiver Years played at USC: 2015-2017 Career highlights: After a relatively quiet freshman season, Burnett broke out towards the end of his sophomore year. As a junior in 2017, he became USC's No. 1 receiving option, catching 86 passes for 1114 yards and nine touchdowns. In a showdown with Texas, he had eight receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including one in overtime, helping lead the Trojans to a statement victory. Burnett will forever be remembered by USC fans, however, for his performance in the 2017 Rose Bowl vs. Penn State. That afternoon in Pasadena, he had one of the best single-game performances by a receiver in program history, catching 13 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was the game-tying score with 1:20 left, as the Trojans would go on to win 52-49 on a walk-off field goal by kicker Matt Boeermeester. The call by ESPN commentator Chris Fowler—"Touchdown! Deontay Burnett with the hat trick!"—will forever be entrenched in the minds of USC fans. After USC: Following his junior season, Burnett somewhat surprisingly declared for the 2018 NFL Draft. However, he was not selected, instead signing with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent. Between 2018 and 2020, he appeared in nine regular season NFL games and one postseason game with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, catching 16 passes for 215 yards across both. Burnett currently plays for the Arlington Renegades of the United Football League.

Nick Wright Sounds Off on Shocking Jalen Hurts Ranking

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Since taking over as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Jalen Hurts has emerged as one of the best players at the position. Fresh off leading the franchise to just its second Super Bowl victory, one NFL analyst was left stunned to see where he was ranked among his peers. Every year, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms puts together a ranking of the top QBs in the league. In his latest installment, Hurts finds himself on the back end of the top ten. The reigning Super Bowl MVP was slotted in at No. 10 behind players such as Baker Mayfield, Justin Herbert, and C.J. Stroud. "He brings a skillset to [the Eagles] offense that makes them almost indefensible with all the talent they have," Simms said. Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts, 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels, and Matthew Stafford headline first batch of top ten rankings of @CSimmsQB's Quarterback Countdown, now on Chris Simms Unbuttoned and Pro Football Talk More: — NBC Sports PR (@NBCSportsPR) June 9, 2025 As expected, Simms latest QB rankings sparked debates among numerous fans and analysts. Among those to chime in with their thoughts was Nick Wright. While on FS1's First Things First, he sounded off on Simms for having Hurts so low on his latest list. "Chris Simms, if you happen to run in to mamma Hurts she's going to give you a piece of her mind," Wright said. "Having Jalen Hurts behind Justin Herbert, it's really one of things where it tells me a lot about the evaluator...I just don't know how you can say he's better than Jalen Hurts." Chris Simms ranks Jalen Hurts #10 in his 2025 QB rankings. @getnickwright reacts: 'I just don't know how you can say [Justin Herbert] is better than Jalen Hurts. That one ranking seems to me to be indefensible other than, 'eh, I just know.'' — First Things First (@FTFonFS1) June 10, 2025 On paper, Herbert has the flashier numbers. However, the proper context is needed. Hurts' passing numbers took a slight dip, but Saquon Barkley had a lot to do with that. Seeing that he put together a historic season on the ground, the Eagles had a more run-heavy attack. Nonetheless, Hurts still threw for over 2,900 yards and 18 touchdowns to just five interceptions. That's not even counting his own impact on the ground, rushing for 630 yards and 14 touchdowns. Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks to the sideline during Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 9, 2025. Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks to the sideline during Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome on February 9, passing numbers look better, throwing for 3,870 yards and 23 touchdowns. That said, when combining scores in the air and on the ground, Hurts found the end zone more. It's also worth noting that Hurts leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl should have him at least a few spots higher on Simms' list. Wright clearly disagrees with Hurts being placed so low, but the Eagles star likely isn't fazed by it. Instead, it's something he'll use as a motivation as he looks to lead Philadelphia on another title run. Between his regular season and playoff success, along with his dynamic skill set, it's hard to argue that there are nine QBs better than Hurts right now.
