Narendra Modi surpasses Indira Gandhi to be PM with second longest unbroken stint
Officials noted that Mr. Modi completes 4,078 days in office on Friday (July 25, 2025). Indira Gandhi was in the office in an unbroken stint for 4,077 days, from January 24, 1966 to March 24, 1977.
Notably, he is the first non-Congress Prime Minister to mark this achievement. Additionally, Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister born after independence and the longest-serving from a non-Hindi state.
The record for the unbroken stint is held by first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Mr. Modi has matched Nehru in leading their respective parties to victory in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections.
As an elected head of a government, in State and at the Centre, Mr. Modi already enjoys the longest stint.
He became Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and remained in the office before taking over as Prime Minister in 2014.
Mr. Modi, the first Prime Minister born after Independence, is also the longest serving non-Congress Prime Minister. The officials noted that the Gujarat-born leader is also the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as the head of the central government.
"Modi is the only leader in India, among all PMs and CMs, to win six consecutive elections as the leader of a party — in Gujarat assembly polls in 2002, 2007 and 2012, and in the national elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024," an official said.

'Before executing Operation Sindoor, our forces studied every aspect and chose the option that would cause maximum damage to terrorists, while ensuring no harm to innocent civilians,' he said. Singh said that while the Opposition had questioned the government's claims, they had not once asked how many Pakistani aircraft had been shot down. 'I believe these questions do not reflect national sentiments,' he said. 'Their question should be whether India destroyed terror bases, and whether Operation Sindoor has been a success,' the defence minister said. 'The answer is yes. They should ask whether any of our brave soldiers have been harmed in the operation. The answer is no.' Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Kerala nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh for alleged conversion, Rahul Gandhi slams BJP
