Donald Trump says Putin does not have to meet Zelensky for US-Russia summit to go ahead
Donald Trump last night dismissed the idea that a US-Russia summit will only happen if Vladimir Putin meets Ukraine 's president. The US leader is continuing to seek a diplomatic end to the war in Ukraine – and is threatening economic sanctions if Putin continues to snub Volodymyr Zelensky. A Kremlin aide yesterday indicated that Mr Trump and Putin could get together 'in the coming days'. Putin said desire for a US-Russia summit was 'mutual' and that friends in the UAE could accommodate the meeting. He also did not rule out face-to-face talks with President Zelensky, adding 'certain conditions' would need to be met, without specifying what those would be. Earlier, a White House official, cited by several US outlets, said the Russian leader would have to agree to meet his Ukrainian counterpart in order for the talks with Mr Trump to go ahead. But when pressed on further details by reporters, the US President said Putin and Mr Zelensky did not have to meet in order for the US-Russia meeting to take place. A US deadline for Russia to commit to peace talks expires today. If the deadline passes, the US is expected to levy secondary tariffs targeting Russia's key allies India and China. In anticipation of those surcharges, India last night announced it was suspending its orders for Russian oil. The move would deprive the Kremlin of billions in oil revenues to bankroll its occupation and bombardment of Ukraine. When asked about today's deadline, Mr Trump said last night: 'It's going to be up to him [Putin]. We're going to see what he has to say. It's going to be up to him. Very disappointed.' Posting on X, President Zelensky said a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia was still at the forefront of negotiations. He said: 'We remain mindful of the need for a real ceasefire. Ukraine is ready for it and there has been no clear public response from Russia yet.' Last night, former UK defence secretary Ben Wallace said it was essential a European power, such as the UK, should be present at the talks.

Pinterest profit miss overshadows Gen Z, AI-driven growth
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Pinterest (PINS.N), opens new tab missed analysts' estimates for second-quarter profit on Thursday, overshadowing robust revenue and user growth, and sending its shares down over 11% in extended trading. The social media platform reported adjusted profit per share of 33 cents, below analysts' average estimate of 35 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG. However, its quarterly revenue grew 17% to $998.2 million, beating expectations of $974.8 million. The company's stock has gained about 35% so far this year. The growth was boosted by a surge in Gen Z users—who now represent more than half of Pinterest's user base— and adoption of its AI-powered ad suite, Performance+, which has appealed to advertisers seeking personalized and automated campaigns. CEO Bill Ready said adoption of Performance+ among mid-market advertisers was accelerating, cutting campaign creation time in half. Still, Pinterest forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.03 billion and $1.05 billion, broadly in line with estimates of $1.03 billion. The revenue growth outlook "is strong but not accelerating from second quarter's 17%," said eMarketer analyst Jeremy Goldman. "In a high-expectation environment, even a small gap between reality and euphoria can trigger a sell-the-news reaction." Rivals Meta (META.O), opens new tab and Reddit (RDDT.N), opens new tab posted upbeat second quarter performance last week. In contrast, Snap (SNAP.N), opens new tab reported its slowest quarterly revenue growth in over a year. The termination of the "de minimis" exemption - a U.S. duty-free import provision - led to tighter ad budgets for smaller platforms such as Snap, as marketers preferred to larger platforms with wider reach. Pinterest CFO Julia Donnelly said the change prompted Asia-based e-commerce retailers to reduce their U.S. ad spending, though some shifted spending to Europe and other international markets. The San Francisco-based company's ad pricing fell 25% year over year, as a larger share of ad impressions now comes from international markets, where ad prices are generally lower than in the U.S. Pinterest has third-party ad deals with Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, (AMZN.O), opens new tab and ad platform Magnite (MGNI.O), opens new tab. The platform's global monthly active users (MAUs) rose 11% from a year earlier to 578 million, topping estimates of 553 million, but user growth slowed to 8 million additions in the quarter from 17 million in the first. "MAUs are approaching a ceiling level of maturity, and the market is maturing rapidly despite the incremental implementation of AI to drive user growth," Zephirin Group analyst Lenny Zephirin said.

Australian insurer QBE beats interim profit estimates on premium growth, lower claims
Aug 8 (Reuters) - Australian insurer QBE ( opens new tab beat market estimates for interim earnings on Friday, helped by strong premium growth in North America and international divisions coupled with claims being limited. The company said its catastrophe costs stayed below its allowance despite high industry losses from severe U.S. and Australian weather, including floods in the Mid-North Coast and in the Hunter regions onshore in May. The group paid out $479 million in catastrophe-related claims, lower than $527 million forked out in the prior corresponding period and "comfortably below" its first-half catastrophe allowance of $549 million. The group, which operates in 27 countries including the United States, said its gross written premiums grew 5.9% to $13.82 billion for the first half of fiscal 2025. The insurer added that growth continued, fuelled by targeted expansion in select insurance classes in North America and internationally, and aided by reduced costs after exiting weaker lines. QBE posted adjusted net profit after income tax of $997 million for the six months ending June 30, compared with $777 million a year earlier, beating LSEG estimate of $839.39 million. The Sydney-based insurer also declared an interim dividend of 31 Australian cents per share, up from 24 Australian cents a year ago. The company reported a combined operating ratio of 92.8%, compared with 93.8% a year earlier. A ratio below 100% means the insurer earned more in premiums than it paid out in claims. QBE reiterated its forecast for constant currency gross written premiums growth in mid-single digits for financial year 2025.
