Guillermo del Toro to Host Canadian Horror Film Festival (Exclusive)
Guillermo del Toro's film school will be back in session in Toronto this summer when the Oscar-winning director hosts a lecture series on Canadian horror movies at TIFF Lightbox.
The July 9 to 13 curated showcase for TIFF Cinematheque, entitled From Rabid to Skinamarink: Canadian Movie Madness, will see the maestro of monsters take audiences through a series of iconic genre pics like David Cronenberg's sophomore feature Rabid (1977), Vincenzo Natali's Cube (1997) and John Fawcett's supernatural fright pic Ginger Snaps starring Katharine Isabelle (2000) to reveal and explain their horror genre beats.

The Mexican director will also explain the mechanics of Bruce McDonald's Pontypool (2008), and Kyle Edward Ball's feature directorial debut, Skinamarink (2022) for their own visual and emotional impacts on audiences.
Del Toro has made Toronto a second home after Los Angeles. And the Canadian city has hosted production for a number of his movies, including Mimic, the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Nightmare Alley and more recently the Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein. His TV series The Strain was also shot locally.
That proximity has allowed del Toro to develop a close association with the Toronto International Film Festival and its year-round headquarters, TIFF Lightbox. His master classes on filmmaking techniques often coincide with production on his latest movie projects in Toronto. And del Toro has hosted an earlier lecture series at TIFF Lightbox on Mexican cinema, Alfred Hitchcock films and film noir pics.
The prolific director's creative ties to Toronto also includes key positions in his locally-shot movies, besides himself as director and Hollywood leads, being filled by Canadians down to longtime producer and collaborator J. Miles Dale, the production designer, costume designer, editors and other technical posts.
TIFF Lightbox and del Toro have also partnered on a free, upcoming outdoor screening of The Shape of Water as part of the film festival's 50th anniversary this summer.

Man claims he snagged a $5 million lottery win — only to have girlfriend take the money and run
A Canadian man said he hit the jackpot — then got left in the lurch. Lawrence Campbell of Winnipeg claimed he paid for a lottery ticket that turned out to be a $5 million winner but couldn't officially collect the winnings because he had lost his wallet and ID, so his longtime girlfriend Krystal McKay collected the prize instead. But instead of living a life of luxury together, McKay allegedly ghosted Campbell — who is now suing her to recoup the cash, according to reports. Advertisement He trusted her because the pair were 'in a loyal, committed and promising romantic partnership,' lawyer told CTV News. Lawrence Campbell says girlfriend Krystal McKay ditched him after getting the money. CTV News Campbell and McKay had been dating for a year and a half and lived together, he told the outlet. But less than two weeks after McKay cashed in the big fat check, she failed to return to the hotel room they'd been sharing, he claimed. Advertisement 'He set out to visit a few of her known spots where she would party and sure enough after some investigation, he found her; in bed, with another guy,' he told CTV News. The lottery ticket was in McKay's name, but Campbell claims he paid for it and they had agreed it was his. Niecy Nash-Betts gets candid on Hollywood sex scenes at 55: ‘It's stressful'
The claws are coming out for Niecy Nash-Betts. The actress, 55, opened up about sex scenes in the entertainment industry, while talking with Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti during the Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable. 'Well, I was never the ingénue,' Nash-Betts told the ladies about past roles. 'Then, when I turned 45, it was like, 'And now we want you to be naked.' You waited until now? I was fine to play the part, but the days that you have to film intimate scenes, it's stressful. And I think it's men who do these call sheets because they put them at night. They think it's sexy. 'You go through all the heart palpitations, the closed set. 'Was my side meat a little too jiggly? Are my kibbles and bits covered?' And then they don't use it! Otherwise, you'll never eat lunch in this town again,'' she admitted. 'Some of that comes from older generations, family members, and that's how they think. 'This is the greatest love of my entire life. I would not even be able to enjoy my work as much as I do without that kind of support. So I did what I wanted to do. I don't regret it. I would do it again. As a matter of fact, we are about to celebrate five years.' Now, the wives are ready to celebrate their love story once more in honor of the five year mark. 'We're about to do another vow renewal,' Nash-Bettes told the table, 'a big party, just so I can say 'In your face' to whoever told me not to get married.'
