Grammy-winning star battling cancer fears 'cruel' deportation under Trump law

Metro09-07-2025
Singer Raul Malo, who is best known as the frontman for The Mavericks, has raised concerns about his US citizenship under new laws.
The Grammy-winning country singer was back on tour with his band, a year after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatment.
Last July, they were forced to cancel gigs after Raul, 59, started chemotherapy, of which he had 16 rounds as per his latest update.
While he's not 'out of the woods' yet, he is well enough for The Mavericks to return to touring — only to be faced with a new concern.
Raul, who was born in the US, called out the 'cruelty and suffering being inflicted on the unsuspecting' after President Donald Trump's deportation bill was passed.
'Dear America, today is the day we celebrate you and what you used to stand for,' he said in a post on Instagram. 'The words 'liberty and justice for all' have faded into a distant past.
'To some of us those words were deeply personal. My family came here because of those words. I was born here because of those words. I have had an extraordinary life because of those words.'
'Now those words have lost their meaning,' stated Raul. 'They are now abstract concepts used to inflict cruelty and suffering on the unsuspecting, the weak, the sick, the poor, the needy.'
He revealed that under the new law, he and his sister could be labelled 'illegal birthright citizens' if their mother is 'stripped of her naturalised citizenship'.
Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' comes with a slew of tax cuts, benefitting the wealthiest while also boost funding for defence, border security and producing energy.
The bill puts aside $45billion to detain undocumented people taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). https://www.instagram.com/p/DLiHXdgOqml/?img_index=1

It also means that immigrants — including refugees, asylees and victims of sex trafficking and domestic violence — may no longer qualify for federal benefits like Medicaid and food stamps.
Addressing trolls who told him to 'shut up and sing', the 'Dance the Night Away hitmaker said: 'Well, clearly that's not happening. You see the thing is this is my country too. Always has been.'
He concluded: 'This isn't about politics anymore. It's about humanity. It's about all of us. We, the people.'
The week before, Raul had shared an update on his medical situation, posted a picture of himself in a hospital bed.
'First of all thank you to everyone for their kind wishes and support throughout all of this,' the There Goes My Heart singer wrote on Instagram.
'I thought I had everything under control. (Btw, that's just you lying to yourself) Then the cancer sideshows started to play out.
'My sinus infection literally brought me to my knees. I had never felt headaches like that. I went to a specialist. Got it taken care of but the residual results are a numbing of the left side of my face. Neurologist said it will repair over time. The damage is not permanent and not visible. A little drooling here and there…oh well. Perspective: I'm alive.'
He also has an abdominal hernia, which is 'the most challenging', as it is 'very visible' and 'really painful' at times. More Trending
'16 rounds of chemo have done what they're made to do…kill cancer,' Raul continued. 'I'm not out of the woods yet but I'm on my way.'
He thanked his band for sticking by him, having reformed in 2012 after a short hiatus from 2003.
The Mavericks were founded by Raul in 1992 with drummer Paul Deakin, and includes Eddie Perez on guitar and Jerry Dale McFadden on keyboards.
They had breakout hits in the 90s, with single Here Comes the Rain securing a Grammy win alongside numerous nominations over the years.

Gary Lineker attends niece Tia's lavish wedding as fallout with brother Wayne eases

The brothers have reunited on two occasions this summer FEUD OVER? Back in June, Gary appeared to put his feud with brother Wayne to one side as they partied at a family wedding in Ibiza - and now they have taken yet another step towards putting their rift to bed. Tia shared the first glimpse of her lavish Mallorca wedding on Instagram on Wednesday - with her uncle clearly in attendance. She tied the knot with husband Harry Agombar, and her uncle Gary was sitting among the guests despite the 17-year feud between the Lineker brothers. Her father Wayne walked her down the alter and linked onto her arm as he did so. Tia looked stunning in a white dress, complete with a veil and huge bouquet of flowers. Her father walked beside her in a dapper black suit. BROTHERS REUNITE Gary was seen sitting among the guests, signalling a truce between the brothers. This was their second reunion in recent weeks. Back in June the former Match of the Day host's son Harry got married. Harry, 31, tied the knot with partner Bella in a luxurious ceremony on the Spanish island of Ibiza. Gary Lineker reveals Match of the Day blunder he made in last-ever appearance for first time in 26 years Spirits were high as all the family celebrated together beneath the sunshine. GARY AND WAYNE'S FEUD The two brothers are believed to have fallen out while Gary was with his second wife Danielle Bux. They travelled to Ibiza to visit Wayne but the trip broke their close relationship, which saw an end to their weekly phone calls. He told The Sun in 2015: "In my opinion, Danielle cost me my relationship with my brother. "Sadly Gary is no longer a part of my life. "They came to Ibiza in August 2008 and it was really awkward. "I didn't spark with Danielle and our relationship was cold." Wayne was Gary's best man at his first wedding to Michelle Cockayne in 1986. But the club owner did not attend as the ex-BBC host tied to knot with Danielle because his invite did not extend to his girlfriend at the time Ana Tanaka. Opening up on the brother's relationship in a recent interview with The Mail, Wayne said: "It's not so good to be honest, we don't really speak very often. "I'll always be his number one fan."

Kate Middleton releases new video celebrating the beauty of British summer

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Princess of Wales has shared a new message with a professional video of the UK's beautiful landscapes that helped inspire her through her cancer journey. For 2025, Kate Middleton spoke of how she has been comforted by nature over the past year, during which she received treatment for cancer. Spreading a message of love, she has now released a second video through the Kensington Palace social media accounts highlighting the natural beauty of British summertime. She wrote a post on X, signed off with her initial: 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. It has never been more important to appreciate the value of one another, and of Mother Nature. Here's to Summer. C' Her voiceover is played over video shot by Will Warr, from TopJaw fame, depicting an idyllic vision of British summertime without the raging wildfires. It does include awe-inspiring moments from the UK's landscape, a pollinating bee, huge trees, crashing waves, towering cliffs and children playing in sand dunes. Catherine says: 'Summer is a season for abundance. Just as the flowers bloom and the fruits ripen, we too are reminded of our own potential for growth. It is the time to ignite our inner fire and explore our own creativity, passions, and dreams. 'As we bask in the sunlit hours, friends and families come together; playing, connecting, being present. Embracing the joy to be found in even the most fleeting of moments and shared experiences. 'Our lives flourish when we cherish the bonds of love and friendship. 'So open your hearts; sing, dance, play. 'The days are still long, so simply love, and be loved.' The glossy production includes shots from Sheffield, Bradford, North Wales and Anglesey and the south coast of England. It comes after a furore over her message, which led to her picture being pulled from news agencies, in a row over manipulation which dragged on for weeks and led to a public apology. She told how discrepancies seen in the family photo were not part of some big conspiracy, but her 'amateur' attempts at picture editing. The princess came under scrutiny following her Mother's Day message last year, which included a photo of her and her children said to have been taken by William in Windsor earlier in the week. Questions were raised that the image – the first of the princess to have been released after she underwent abdominal surgery a few weeks earlier – may have been manipulated before it was posted on social media. It was withdrawn by international picture agencies later the same day. Kate publicly took the blame for the manipulated photograph and issued a personal apology for the 'confusion'. She said: 'Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. 'I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. 'I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C.' The princess underwent a course of preventative chemotherapy after her cancer diagnosis and announced in September last year that she had completed her treatment. More Trending In January, Kate confirmed she is 'now in remission' from cancer following a surprise visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital where she received her treatment. A message on social media, also signed 'C', said: 'I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. 'My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. 'We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional. Got a story? Yungblud reveals heartbreaking way he learned pal Ozzy Osbourne had died as he opens up on romance with Jesse Jo Stark

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT has been a whirlwind few months for Yungblud. The British rocker landed his third consecutive No1 album with Idols, helped make history at Ozzy Osbourne's Back To The Beginning concert at Villa Park and now he is on the cusp of releasing his first feature-length music film. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 11 Yungblud was friends with Ozzy Osbourne Credit: Instagram 11 The artist is on the cusp of releasing his first feature-length music film, Are You Ready Boy? 'It's been f***ing nuts,' Yungblud, real name Dominic Harrison, tells me from his very posh suite in The Londoner Hotel. As I hug him with a glass of wine in hand, he laughs and tells me: 'Why the f***k not? I'll have a glass of champagne.' Dom, who Bizarre have championed since the release of his debut album in 2019, is always the most colourful, clever and captivating interviewee. And when we speak about his close friendship with Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy he is visibly moved. 'The past couple of weeks have been very weird to connect with,' Dom explains. 'You get to know someone personally, who you love. And then they leave. 'I was texting him, then his son Jack texted me and said, 'He's gone.' I'm like, 'What?' 'Being around the family and being at the funeral, the amount of love there. That family are real as f***k. 'The dream is to have kids and a family like that. There's no gimmicks. It's authentic.' Dom has now released his live version of Ozzy's 1972 solo hit Changes as a charity single to help raise money for Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Acorns Children's Hospice. He adds: 'The best thing is that I got to honour my hero. That's all I was thinking about. I was singing for one man there.' Touching clip Jack Osbourne reveals how dad Ozzy's fan tributes are being saved with 'flowers to be buried with him' His new film, Yungblud. Are You Ready Boy?, was made in Berlin, with cameras following Dom and his band as they recorded a live version of Idols at the Hansa Studios where David Bowie and U2 laid down some of their famous albums. The footage is searingly honest and shows a different side to the brash, confident Yungblud who his fans adore. 'I will never watch it again, it's too uncomfortable,' Dom explains of the film, which will be shown in 150 cinemas nationwide between August 20 and 24. 'I was ready to make a film like this because I completely alleviated all control. 'When people have seen ten seconds of me on the internet, they think they know me. But I'm calm, I'm emotional, I'm angry in places, I'm very passionate. 'I think something like this in today's day and age, where you elongate the imagination, you let it be raw as f**k, is rare. And I think it's going to stand out.' 11 The Sun's Ellie Henman with Yungblud Credit: Supplied Created by filmmaker Paul Dugdale, Yungblud is seen performing the 12-track album in full — with only one take per track. Dom explains: 'I said to Paul, 'I don't want to do it after we've been on the road and toured it for a year.' Because when it becomes muscle memory, it's easier. 'The red light goes on, you've got to do it in one take.' The two-hour film also shines a light on Dom's relationship with fellow musician Jesse Jo Stark. In a series of candid interviews, Dom opens up about his decision to put their relationship on hold so he could focus on himself and making the record. I revealed this week that the pair are now back together. And Dom, it's clear to see, is a man who is very much in love. He says: 'Sacrificing Jesse Jo and the love bit, it's a very strange thing. 'I've never been in a real relationship in rock music — genuinely loving someone. We all know there's fing couples out there that do this for the media. 'Genuinely, we really love each other. It's so hard to navigate in rock music. When everyone's staring, everyone's got a perception, everyone's got a narrative 'Like when your narrative isn't yours, it's painted by how many views a video gets. The more views a video gets, the more truthful it is, you know. That was rough.' For now, life for Dom is good, and his mum and aunts were at the film premiere in London's Leicester Square on Tuesday. As I leave, Dom tells me: 'I'm still just Dom from Donny, who's trying to f***ing get that high note. To touch the f***ing sky.' I think you've already got to Cloud Nine, Dom. The Rolling Stones rocker is understood to have invited around 50 guests, including his bandmate Ronnie Wood and actor Sacha Baron Cohen, but kept a divide to make sure he had some space. Comedian Rob Beckett blagged himself a seat at the table after being invited to the event by Jimmy Carr. And I'm amazed he could remember any of it as he turned up after watching Oasis at Wembley Stadium. Rob revealed: 'I said hello to Mick. I didn't properly chat to him because there was a separate room that had Mick in it with Sacha. 'I was chatting to Ronnie Wood and Ronnie's wife, Sally, for most of the night.' Speaking on his Parenting Hell podcast, Rob added: 'A cake came out, a lovely chocolate cake. I'm stood there and I'm absolutely off my f***ing head. 'I've drunk, I'd say at this point, six pints of lager, two espresso martinis, and I'd say a bottle-and-a-half of rose, and just been to the best gig of my life. 'I'm stood wearing a Stone Island anorak with a vodka and soda talking absolute s***e.' I've got lots of time to kill. 'Sorry to anyone that had tickets to my shows. Trust me, I'd rather be on stage.'
