5 players Broncos could trade away before roster cuts

USA Today15 hours ago
The Denver Broncos are going to face some very tough decisions when they finalize a 53-man roster next week. Broncos general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton can make some of those tough decisions a little easier by trading away players at deep positions.
With one more preseason game on deck before roster cuts begin next week, we've put together a quick list of five players Denver could look to trade away in the coming days. Note that these potential trade candidates are hypothetical scenarios, not a report of known trade discussions. NFL teams could come calling, though, and the Broncos would be wise to consider a few moves.
5 Broncos trade candidates
1. CB Damarri Mathis: He's certainly talented enough to serve as a No. 4 or No. 5 cornerback, but Denver is loaded with depth in the secondary. The team would save $3.4 million if they cut Mathis. Trading him for a late-round draft pick would be even better.
2. DE Eyioma Uwazurike: After returning from a gambling suspension in 2024, Uwazurike made the active roster last summer but only appeared in four games during the season. He has one tackle and one pass breakup through two preseason games and might be a risk to get claimed off waivers if the Broncos attempt to bump him down to the practice squad. Trading Uwazurike would open up a roster spot for Jordan Jackson.
3. DL Jordan Jackson: If Denver opts to keep Uwazurike on the 53-man roster again this season, perhaps they could trade Jackson. He dressed for all 17 games last season, recording 17 tackles, two quarterback hits and one sack. Jackson would probably be a big threat to be claimed off waivers if Denver tries to get him down to the practice squad.
4. WR Courtney Jackson: The Broncos have a crowded wide receiver room, and coach Sean Payton has predicted a WR who is on the roster now could end up on another club's 53-man roster by Week 1. Jackson is a strong contender for such a scenario after he totaled 105 all-purpose yards last week and demonstrated his ability as a returner. If Denver is worried Jackson wouldn't make it through the waiver wire, perhaps the team could attempt to trade him.
5. S JL Skinner: Sam Franklin seems likely to make the active roster as a special teams safety, and that might not leave room for Skinner. If another team is seeking more depth at safety and contributions on special teams, the Broncos might be able to trade Skinner and a seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
Following their preseason finale on Aug. 23, Denver will have until Aug. 26 to set a 53-man roster. We will track all of the team's roster cuts -- and potential trades -- on Broncos Wire.

Sean Payton on trade talks: 'The easy part is the fielding calls'

It's that time of year. As roster cuts draw closer, NFL teams are making calls about potential trades -- both to bring players in and to ship players out. As the Denver Broncos prepare to make some tough roster decisions, general manager George Paton and coach Sean Payton will receive calls from other clubs about players on the roster bubble. 'I think the easy part is the fielding calls because if they come, then you sit and discuss what call came," Payton said Tuesday. "What happens a lot is the call that comes that's very open-ended. 'What are you guys looking for? What are we looking for?' You know that there's a target in their mind. I like the decisions we have to make, be it they're tough ones. The process is still ongoing.' After facing the New Orleans Saints in their preseason finale on Saturday, the Broncos will have until Aug. 26 to set an initial 53-man roster. We will track all of Denver's cuts -- and any potential trades -- on Broncos Wire. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Broncos OLB Nik Bonitto provides update after foot procedure

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto (foot) returned to practice this week after sitting out last week. The 25-year-old pass rusher recently had a bone spur removed on the top of his foot, and he's now working to get back up to full speed ahead of the regular season. "It was kind of just a thing that showed up in the 49ers practice," Bonitto said Tuesday. "And ever since then, it was kind of bothering me, bothering me. I was trying to fight through it through the game. I finished, then it felt like -- I told the trainers -- if I kept playing, I don't think I could have like really kept going on it. "So it was something where we could either keep trying to fight throughout the season or have the procedure done and not worry about it. So I felt like, with the trainers -- what they told me -- and what Coach told me, they were like, '[You] should get it done,' so I have full trust in them, and that's what we ended up doing." Bonitto dominated in San Francisco despite playing through the bone spur. After having the procedure, he won't have to nurse his foot during the season, and he's expected to be fully recovered in time for Week 1. Bonitto was named a second-team All-Pro last season and he earned his first career Pro Bowl nod after totaling 13.5 sacks and scoring two defensive touchdowns. He aims to take his game to an even higher level in 2025. 'As a defense as a total, we want to have the No. 1 defense," Bonitto said when asked about his goals. "As far as just individual, just to be better than last year. I kind of have taken pride in just getting better every year, finding ways to be better in my game and just help the defense be better.' Bonitto and the Broncos will host the Tennessee Titans in their first game of the regular season on Sept. 7. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Chelsea not picking Jackson and Nkunku as club seeks exit for out-of-favor strikers

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea duo Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku will not be involved in Friday's Premier League match at West Ham as the club looks to offload the strikers in the final days of the transfer window. Chelsea has signed two new center forwards in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, so Jackson and Nkunku appear to be out of favor with manager Enzo Maresca. Jackson is available after serving a suspension for the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday in the opening round of the Premier League. 'But he is not going to be part of the squad,' Maresca said, 'because as we have already said, we have two strikers in that position and also we know something could happen before the transfer window closes.' Maresca said the same situation applies to France forward Nkunku, who joined on a six-year deal in 2023 but has had limited game time. Senegal striker Jackson's contract at Chelsea is until 2033. Left back Ben Chilwell and winger Raheem Sterling are training away from the main squad, Maresca said, and are 'waiting for some solution' in the transfer market. ___
