BJP question's CM's stance on Maoists

The Hindu29-04-2025

The BJP has demanded that the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy explain the logic behind reviving a 'dead' Maoist threat and whether the State is preparing to welcome fleeing extremists from Chhattisgarh — risking Telangana's hard-won peace for political gamesmanship.
Party's chief spokesperson N.V. Subash, in a media release, has strongly condemned the Chief Minister's 'bizarre' proposal to reopen talks with Naxals — a threat that has long been eradicated from the State. Mr. Revanth Reddy is either being 'utterly ignorant of history or deliberately trying to mislead the public'. He pointed out that during the tenure of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy — whom Mr. Revanth Reddy cites as a model — talks with Naxals had failed.
It was only through strong policing that the State had successfully crushed left-wing extremism. 'Between 2004 and 2006, major Naxal leaders were either neutralized in encounters or fled to neighbouring States like Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra,' he poInted out. 'Since Telangana's formation in 2014, there has been no significant Naxal-related violent incidents — only isolated, negligible cases,' he maintained.
Given this reality, the BJP questioned the Chief Minister's motives for reviving the 'Naxal bogey' at a time when Telangana is grappling with a deep financial crisis. 'Is Mr. Revanth Reddy trying to embarrass the Centre, which is on the verge of eradicating Naxalism nationwide, particularly in Chhattisgarh? Or is this a ploy to distract people from his government's failures,' questioned the BJP leader.

Woman Maoist operative on the run for 15 years arrested in Bihar

Patna: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing anti-LWE operations, the Jamui Police in Bihar on Saturday arrested Sarita Soren a.k.a. Sita Soren, a female Maoist operative who had been absconding for the last 15 years. The arrest took place near Karma village, an official said. The development marks the second major success within three days for the district police as the force on Thursday nabbed another long-absconding Maoist operative involved in serious cases from as far back as 2005. Jamui Superintendent of Police Madan Kumar Anand confirmed the arrest and said that Sarita Soren had been on the police radar for years but consistently evaded capture. Acting on an Intelligence input, a joint team comprising Jamui Police, STF personnel, and officers from the technical cell launched a swift operation and surrounded her maternal home in Karma, successfully apprehending her. "Sarita Soren was involved in the 2010 Maoist attack in Chakai which claimed two lives. She also served as a key member of the female Maoist squad," SP Anand stated. Several cases, including charges under the Arms Act and murder, are registered against her. Her prolonged evasion and strategic role within the Maoist ranks made her one of the most wanted operatives in the region. The police consider her arrest a major blow to Maoist activities in the Jhajha-Chakai belt. Earlier on Thursday, Jamui Police arrested Naresh Ravidas a.k.a. Patal Ravidas, a notorious Maoist operative and former area commander, from Teliyadih village under the Jhajha police station area. On January 5, 2005, he was allegedly involved in the ambush and killed then Munger SP K.C. Surendra Babu and five other police personnel in the Bhimbandh forest area. The deadly attack near Peshra village sent shockwaves across Bihar and exposed critical gaps in the state's security preparedness at that time. In 2008, he was also accused of being involved in a Maoist attack at Belhar village that claimed five lives of innocent civilians in Banka district. The back-to-back arrests reflect increased pressure on Naxalite groups in Bihar and reinforce the state police's commitment to dismantling remaining insurgent networks.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis slams Rahul Gandhi's match fixing jibe in state polls

Maharashtra Congress in-charge and Kerala congress MLA Ramesh Chennithala said when he assumed charge of Maharashtra in early 2024, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi defied the Modi wave in the Lok Sabha elections. He said, the people of Maharashtra stood tall against propaganda and pressure, delivering a decisive verdict that sent the BJP alliance reeling. 'BJP's loss in Maharashtra, along with its poor performance in Uttar Pradesh, was pivotal in preventing it from securing an absolute majority at the national level. And yet, merely six months later, in the Maharashtra state assembly elections, that same Maha Vikas Aghadi — which was poised to win over 170 seats — was reduced to just 50. Is it believable that this staggering turnaround was due to governance or public sentiment? Even the most loyal BJP supporter would hesitate to make such a claim. If Prime Minister Modi himself could not sway Maharashtra, are we to believe that Eknath Shinde, whose politics is marred by betrayal and unprincipled opportunism, could command such a wave,' Congress leader asked. He further said this was not a coincidence. 'It was a calculated and premeditated operation to distort the electoral mandate. Democracy in Maharashtra was not defeated — it was subverted. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Maharashtra had 89.8 million registered voters. By the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this number rose naturally to 92.9 million — a five-year increase of 3.1 million. However, within just five months, during the 2024 Assembly elections, the voter count inexplicably jumped to 97 million — a sudden spike of 4.1 million in less than half a year. This figure defies logic. Even the official estimate of the adult population in Maharashtra stands at 95.4 million. On polling day, the initial turnout reported was 58.22%. With no reports of long queues or late-night voting, it should have remained roughly constant. Instead, by the next morning, the turnout had miraculously jumped to 66.05% — an overnight addition of over 7.6 million votes, predominantly favouring BJP candidates,' Chennithala added. The Congress leader further went on to say that Rahul Gandhi exposed how Maharashtra, once a proud torchbearer of democratic values has become a cautionary tale of how institutions can be compromised, how power can be snatched instead of earned, and how silence can become complicity. This is no longer about one state or one election. It is about the soul of our democracy. We urge the Election Commission to break its silence. The people of Maharashtra — and of India — deserve answers.

PCC chief accuses government of showing favouritism in allocation of shops

Member of Parliament and president of Pradesh Congress Committee V. Vaithilingam has accused the AINRC-BJP government of bias in allotment of shops in the new complex constructed at Anna Thidal under the Smart City project. Speaking at the PCC office after inducting traders into the party, Mr. Vaithilingam said the government was functioning against the general interests of the trading community. Traders associated with the ruling establishment have alone benefitted, he said. 'While shops at the new bus stand have not been allotted even after commencement of bus services from the complex, shops at Anna Thidal are being allotted to people close to the ruling party even before the facility is inaugurated,' he said. Former Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and several other Congress leaders attended the event.
