Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe has been hospitalized in the United States due to an acute case of gastroenteritis, the club confirmed on Thursday. The French forward missed Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal, which ended in a 1-1 draw, marking Xabi Alonso's first match as head coach.
'Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment,' Real Madrid said in an official statement.
Mbappe, 26, had been feeling unwell in the days leading up to the match in Miami, with Alonso noting earlier that the striker was "feeling a little better" but still not fully fit. He also missed training on Tuesday with a fever and in his absence during the game on Wednesday, 21-year-old Madrid B-team player Gonzalo Garcia started and scored the opening goal against the Saudi Arabian side.

Peter Shilton congratulates Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio on breaking record

England goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton hailed Fluminense shot stopper Fabio breaking his record for most competitive appearances in men's football as a 'brilliant achievement'. Fabio, 44, broke Shilton's mark on Tuesday when he played for a 1,391st time in the 2-0 win over Colombia's America de Cali at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. 'Huge congratulations to Fabio Deivson Lopes Maciel for beating my @GWR a record I was proud to hold for over 28 years for the most competitive matches in the history of football,' said Shilton in a post on X, formerly Twitter. 'Keeping the record within the keepers union BRILLIANT achievement Fabio #proud @FIFAcom @FA.' Fluminense and Brazilian media say Fabio now stands alone in football history, although neither FIFA nor regional body CONMEBOL has declared it a record. 'Sometimes we don't realise the importance of such a significant achievement as breaking this record, which has stood for many years,' Fabio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil, said following his clean sheet in the Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg. The home fans chanted, 'Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil,' and he received a commemorative plaque to mark the achievement. 'No one plays so many matches without a level of professionalism like his,' said Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho. 'He'll undoubtedly continue to play for a long time. It will be difficult for another player to surpass his record.' Fabio won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense in 2023 and was part of the side that reached the semifinals of the Club World Cup in the United States this summer. He made 976 appearances for Cruzeiro between 2005 and 2022, after playing 30 times for Uniao Bandeirante and another 150 games for Vasco da Gama. His record outing against America de Cali was his 235th match for Fluminense. Fabio began his career in 1997, the year that Shilton retired, but unlike the former record holder was never capped at senior level. The 75-year-old 125-times capped Englishman, who was a key member of the Nottingham Forest side that won successive European Cups (1979/80), considers his total number of appearances to be 1,387, but Guinness World Records puts the number at 1,390. Mascha In Trouble: Inter Miami Head Coach Spotted Passing On Instructions Over Phone After Red Card

Last Updated: Mascherano was sent off ahead of the second period of play, and was caught talking on the phone in an attempt to pass on instruction, which is banned in the Leagues Cup. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano courted controversy on Thursday as he was pictured making a phone call to pass on tactical information after being sent off during the Leagues Cup game between the Herons and Tigres at the Chase Stadium in Florida. Miami, who were devoid of the services of eight-time Ballon d'Or-winning Argentine icon Lionel Messi due to injury, posted a 2-1 win over the Mexican club thanks to a brace of penalties from Luis Suarez. However, the Herons had to endure head coach Mascherano being sent off from the touchline. Mascherano was sent off ahead of the commencement of the second period of play over an argument with the referee, but his situation worsened as he was caught talking on the phone in an attempt to pass on instruction, which is banned in the Leagues Cup. Miami, missing the services of eight-time Ballon d'Or-winning Argentine icon Lionel Messi due to injury, secured a 2-1 victory over the Mexican club, thanks to two penalty goals from Luis Suarez. However, the Herons faced a challenge when head coach Mascherano was sent off from the touchline. Mascherano was ejected just before the second half started following an argument with the referee. His situation deteriorated further when he was caught using his phone to provide instructions, which is prohibited in the Leagues Cup. Mascherano reportedly instructed assistant coach Lucas Rodriguez Pagano during the phone call while seated at the stadium. Additionally, Aquino had a moment to forget as the ball struck his arm again in the box, allowing Suarez to step up and score the winning goal in the 89th minute of the match. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
