Indian market soars nearly 4% as geopolitical tensions ease
Mumbai: India's equity benchmarks jumped nearly 4% on Monday, posting their biggest single-day gain in four years, buoyed by stoppage of hostilities with Pakistan and a truce in the US-China tariff war. The thaw in frosty relations between the world's largest economies revived risk-on sentiment, sending safe-haven assets such as gold tumbling.
The
BSE Sensex
jumped 2,975 points, or 3.7%, to close at 82,429.9. The NSE Nifty surged 916.7 points, or 3.8%, ending over 24,924. Both indices closed at their highest levels for the year, aided by the sharpest run-up in a day since February 2021.

The rally boosted the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies by ₹16.9 lakh crore.
Easing of hostilities on both fronts came as a significant reprieve for investors who have been on edge due to uncertainties over the outcome of geopolitical and economic conflicts in the past few weeks. While all Asian markets rallied after the US and China agreed to a 90-day pause on tariffs and slashed levies, Indian bourses got an extra fillip from the halt in fighting with Pakistan, forcing traders to liquidate bearish bets made late last week amid heightened tensions between the neighbours.

VIX Drops 15%
Live Events
Pakistan's main share index soared 9% on Monday. "Today's (Monday's) market rally is a confluence of positive global and domestic developments - from easing
geopolitical tensions
between India and Pakistan, to progress on US-China trade talks," said Taher Badshah, chief investment officer at Invesco Mutual Fund.
The Volatility Index (VIX), the market's fear measure, plunged 15% to 18.4, in line with the equities rebound, indicating options traders see lower risks in the near term. Last week, this index had surged over 16% as the Sensex and Nifty declined 1.3% on fears of a full-blown conflict with the neighbouring nation.
The broader market also ended strong, with the Nifty Midcap 150 jumping 3.75% and the Nifty Small-Cap 250 gaining 4%. Of the 4,254 stocks traded on the BSE, 3,545 advanced, while 576 declined.
The bullish momentum may push the markets higher in the days ahead, but fund managers do not rule out intermittent sell-offs. "The market could see small doses of correction over the next few days after this massive rally," said Badshah. "But what has changed now is that it's now more of a buy-on-dips market, rather than a sell-on-rise market."
The Sensex and Nifty are up nearly 13% since April 7, when the recent rebound started after Trump halted tariffs on imports from most countries, barring China, for 90 days.
Gold, one of the best performers in recent times because of its safe-haven status, slumped nearly 3% on Monday in response to the pause in the US-China tariff conflict. "For investors, our view is that a clear framework of disciplined asset allocation matters more than reacting to noise," said Neelesh Surana, chief investment officer at Mirae Asset Investment Managers.
All sectoral indices in India ended in the green, with metals, realty, power, IT, and energy stocks leading the charge, rising between 4% and 6%.
Foreign portfolio investors
(FPIs) remained net buyers, purchasing shares worth Rs 1,246.5 crore on Monday. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also contributed to the rally, investing Rs 1,448.4 crore during the day.

HC bench orders UP govt not to demolish any madrassa in Shravasti
Lucknow: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has ordered that the Uttar Pradesh authorities would not take any coercive action against more than two dozen madrassas of Shravasti district. It also cautioned the state that it would not demolish any madrassas which have approached the court. The bench asked the state government to file its reply against the writ petitions till July 3. A bench of Justice Jaspreet Singh passed the order on the petitions moved by Madarssa Moinul Islam Qasmiya Samiti and 26 other madrassas individually in Shravasti. In April, the UP had govt launched a major drive against illegal encroachments in districts near the India-Nepal border, Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, and Balrampur, demolishing hundreds of unauthorised structures, including unrecognised religious institutions. Illegal constructions were demolished in Shravasti and Bahraich, while in Siddharthnagar, 12 illegal structures were identified and notices issued. In Lakhimpur Kheri, a day-long survey found no illegal encroachments. These actions target long-standing illegal occupations of valuable border land, which the Yogi govt is determined to reclaim, the UP govt order said. In his order on Friday, Justice Singh observed, "It is now equally well settled that where any notice in the nature of a show cause is issued, it must be issued with sufficient particularity so that the noticee can respond specifically and can know what charge is to be replied." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The bench had already passed a similar order allowing a petition filed in connection with another such madrassa, Maktab Anwarul Uloom, Shravasti, on May 14. The state had issued notices to the petitioners restraining them from imparting religious education in these madrassas. 1.6k cr Godavari purification work to begin before Kumbh
Nashik: The Godavari purification project worth Rs1,600 crore to make the river free of pollution will start before the Simhastha Kumbh Mela to be held between 2026 and 2028. Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has completed the tender process and finalised an eligible private agency. During the Kumbh Mela meeting held in Nashik city last week, NMC commissioner Manisha Khatri requested Fadnavis for his approval to award the contract to the agency concerned. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the CM said he had received the proposal and it was under consideration. Khatri told TOI the state govt is positive about the agency and NMC expects to get an approval soon. The Godavari purification project includes construction of four large new sewage treatment plants (STPs) in place of the eight old ones, construction of sewage pumping stations and diverting untreated sewage from 22 nullahs to STPs through new sewage lines to be constructed under the project. NMC's nine old STPs are around 30 years old. The civic body's major concern is that levels of biological oxygen demand and the total suspended solids of the treated sewage water at the old STPs are in the range of 20 to 25. It needs to be below 5 as per environmental norms. The total sewage water treatment capacity of these old nine STPs is around 342 MLD. At present, the civic body has 11 STPs, including nine old ones, treating sewage water with a total treatment capacity of 392 MLD. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sanitize & Smooth Clothes Fast with Philips Steamer Philips Garment Steamers Shop Now Undo Two new STPs were built and made operational over the last two years. One with a capacity of 18 MLD was built in Gangapur and the other with a capacity of 32 MLD at Pimpalgaon Khamb. NMC decided to construct four new STPs and upgrade an existing one with a total capacity of new STPs instead. The four new STPs will come up at Tapovan (180 MLD capacity), Agartakli (97 MLD), Chehedi (64 MLD) and Panchak (75 MLD). Existing old STP at Agartakli with a capacity of 70 MLD is to be upgraded with new technology, said officials. Untreated domestic sewage is released in 22 nullahs flowing into the Godavari river and causing pollution. With the new STPS, untreated waste will be diverted to the nearby facilities by laying new sewage lines. As many as 10 sewage pumping stations will be built.
