Sabah Juniors shine at Beijing Squash Open

Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Gabriel (left) and Adryel with their prizes. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's young squash talents, Gabriel Chia Yong He and Adryel Levi Limus Faurillo, made impressive runs at the Beijing Junior Squash Open 2025, held from July 24–28 at the Beijing Squash Centre, China. Representing the Prestige Squash Club, Gabriel competed in the boys' Under-15 category while Adryel took part in the boys' Under-13. Both players showcased determination and skill, advancing to the finals before narrowly falling to their respective Chinese opponents. They each earned silver medals for their efforts. Club secretary Mohd Nizam Ali Hasan, in a statement on Thursday, praised the duo for their exceptional performances. 'Both players delivered outstanding performances to reach the finals in their categories. They played hard-fought matches against top Chinese opponents on their home turf and finished as worthy runners-up,' he said. He added that their achievements reflect the players' talent, discipline, and development — a proud moment for Sabah squash. Mohd Nizam also expressed gratitude to the club's coaches, parents, and supporters for their continued dedication to nurturing junior squash players in the state. The Beijing tournament was the club's second international outing in July, following their participation in the 8th Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2025, held from July 15–20 at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching. In Kuching, the club fielded 23 players. Among the notable performers were Euodia Lai, who finished sixth in the girls' Under-19 category, and Jedidiah Kwan, who placed eighth in the boys' Under-17. Sabah's golfer wins Kelantan women's title

Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Charlayne poses with her trophy. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. She also expressed her gratitude to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for the opportunity to compete, as well as to the UUM National Golf Academy and sponsors Leonian Malaysia, Callaway Golf Malaysia, and Golf Partner Malaysia for their continued support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
