Rodgers makes financial claim about Tierney's Celtic return

The Nationala day ago
The left-back played 45 minutes as the Scottish champions were beaten 3-2 by Estrela de Amadora in a friendly on Saturday.
It was his first outing in green and white since rejoining his boyhood club on a five-year deal.
Speaking post-match, Rodgers outlined Tierney's financial 'sacrifice'.
He said [RecordSport]: "In isolation, Kieran coming back is brilliant for the team.
"Make no doubt about it, Kieran has sacrificed to come back here in a financial way because he really wanted to come back.

"But to have that player of the quality and experience that he has now, it's going to be really big for us.
'We want to make strides in European football so to bring that level of playerin will certainly help us to do that.
"I think it tells you everything about what he missed and that feeling that he missed when he left.
'I know the clubs involved because I was part of the process in bringing him back so I know where he could have gone.
"But this always felt the right place for him when we spoke months ago. I'm really happy for him.
"He's not even at his peak age yet, he's still got a lot of years left in him and hopefully we'll have them here at Celtic which I know he's really excited about."
Sold for £25 million but brought back for free, it is difficult to argue with the business that saw Tierney return.
Rodgers has stayed in touch with the defender and even met him in Majorca towards the end of last season: "I've been in contact with him throughout the months," he said.
"When I knew he was going out there [Majorca] for a few days before meeting up with Scotland, we arranged to meet up.
"I tend to do that. I met with Callum [McGregor] as well. It's nice to reassure him.
"I know what that feeling's like having been somewhere and coming back and the wonder of what it might be like and feel like.
"But it's not really until you're back here that you really sense it. That's probably what it's like for him. It's probably a little bit strange initially but once he gets to Celtic Park, he will feel really at home again."

Flavio Nazinho 'on the way' to Celtic as Brendan Rodgers has his transfer wish granted

The search for a left-back appears to be rapidly approaching a conclusion for the Hoops Cercle Brugge left-back Flavio Nazinho is reportedly closing in on a move to Celtic with Brendan Rodgers' set to add competition for Kieran Tierney. The 21-year-old looks set to replaced the void left by Greg Taylor following the Scotland international's departure to greek outfit PAOK. ‌ HLN report that the Portuguese star is "on his way to Celtic" and a deal could be completed "in the short term." ‌ It is claimed that Nazinho caught the attention of the Scottish Premiership champions at the U21 European Championship after impressing for Portugal. He joined Cercle permanently for €1million (£866k) and has a contract until 2028 - with Sporting reportedly due 15 per cent of the fee when the player is sold on to another club. It comes after Brendan Rodgers' made it clear that he was looking for another left-back to compete with returning hero Tierney - despite being impressed by the early impressions made by Hayato Inamura. Following the 3-2 behind-closed-doors friendly defeat against Estrela Da Amadora in Lisbon, Rodgers said: "The pre-season is always to assess. "We know the model here at the club is always to improve them. Sometimes that means they come in and you assess and look, and look to see what's right for the development of them and the team. ‌ "That's what I'm about, getting a collection of individual players that I can see development and improvement in. "If they are going to be close to the first-team, they'll stay and do that. If not, we may feel they need to go out. "Ina's that example. I just wanted to get the chance to see him and we'll continue to do that. ‌ "But we know in the background that if we need to move on that position, that if we need to move on that position, that's something that we will be ready to do." Rodgers has previously admitted 23-year-old Inamura could be allowed to leave this summer - despite just joining the club from Albirex Niigata. Celtic transfers: 9 players who could depart this summer - from £2.5m-rated forward to forgotten defender

The summer transfer window is well under way in the Scottish Premiership, with a host of incomings and outgoings already confirmed at Celtic ahead of the new Scottish Premiership beginning in just 20 days. Head coach Brendan Rodgers has kept his powder dry so far this summer, spending only minimal amounts on the signing of Benjamin Nygren and Hayato Inamura, while Kieran Tierney, Ross Doohan and Callum Osmand all arrived on Bosman free transfers, though the latter will require a compensation fee. However, with every squad refresh comes a raft of exits - and Celtic are no different this summer. Greg Taylor, Scott Bain, Matthew Anderson, Maik Nawrocki, Nicolas Kühn, and Gustaf Lagerbielke have already left for pastures new this summer, but several others could follow them in the weeks to come. A number of the club's star men have reportedly garnered interest from the English Premier League and beyond, while some fringe players need a fresh start away from Celtic. But which players will still be at the club when the summer window slams shut - and who will depart? The Scotsman takes a look at 9 players who could depart Celtic during the summer transfer window: 1 . Kwon Hyeok-kyu Spent the last two seasons out on loan at St Mirren and Hibs, but has failed to truly impress at either club. The South Korean has recently been linked with a transfer to Austria Vienna. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . Yang Hyun-Jun Reports claim the South Korean 'wants to explore' a move this summer, and has been strongly linked with Norwich City over the weekend. Has interest from Legia Warsaw too, with the 23-year-old seeking more regular first team football. Rated at around the £2.5million mark. | AFP via Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Johnny Kenny Managed to wrestle his way into the Celtic squad last season after a goal-laden stint on loan at Shamrock Rovers. Scored his first goal for the club in a 5-1 thrashing of Aberdeen at Pittodrie, and was subject of a failed £500,000 bid from Bolton Wanderers last week. The young Irishman says he wants to be part of Brendan Rodgers' plans for the upcoming season, but with veritable chances expected to be limited, he could head out on loan in order to get further exposure to first-team football. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales 4 . Cameron Carter-Vickers Linked with a move to Leeds United and Sunderland earlier in the window, the noise around Carter-Vickers' future has died down somewhat in recent weeks. However, Celtic fans will be counting down the days until the window shuts, hoping no English Premier League club launches a late offer. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales

Now, he's landed a plum new job with one of English football's top clubs. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Jack Ross' spell as Dundee United boss was a nightmare Credit: Willie Vass 2 He's been working at Newcastle United for more than two years Credit: Getty Ross, 49, enjoyed a successful playing career for the likes of Clyde, Falkirk and St Mirren before moving into coaching. After getting his first managerial role at Alloa, he took the reins at St Mirren in 2016 and led the Buddies to promotion to the Premiership in 2018. Ross' impressive job in Paisley saw him linked with some huge jobs and he landed the gig at Sunderland in May 2018. Only a cruel last gasp play-off final defeat at Wembley against Charlton denied Ross promotion to the Championship with the Black Cats. He was sacked in October, just five months after the crushing play-off defeat, and quickly returned to Scottish football wtih Hibs. Ross impressed as Hibs boss and led the club to third in the 2020/21 season, also reaching the Scottish Cup Final. He agreed a new contract in July 2021 but was dismissed five months later just days before the League Cup Final. Ross had six months out of the game before being appointed Dundee United manager in June 2022. But it would prove a disastrous spell at Tannadice, with United mauled 7-1 on aggregate by AZ Alkmaar in Europa League Conference qualifying. A humiliating 9-0 home defeat to Celtic left the Terrors bottom of the Premiership table and Ross was dismissed at the end of August - just seven games into his spell as boss. 'Freakish athlete' Anthony Elanga shows off insane 100m time ahead of Newcastle transfer That, to date, is his last job in management. Since March 2023, he's been working at Newcastle United - of course, the huge rivals of one of his former clubs, Sunderland. Ross took up a role in the Magpies' academy as Head of Coach Development before moving into the position of Head of Strategic Technical Football Partnerships. Now, he's received a major promotion. The Toon, who'll be back in the Champions League this coming season, have appointed Ross as Head of Football Strategy. The lofty role will see Ross report directly into the club's incoming Sporting Director. The wide-ranging position gives the Scot responsibility across a number of areas, and will see him involved in the men's, women's and academy areas. On his new job, Ross said: "I am delighted to move to the role of Head of Football Strategy. "This is an exciting opportunity to help the club build on the outstanding progress and successes it has achieved on and off the pitch in recent seasons. "We have incredibly high calibre staff here across multiple pillars of the club, and I am looking forward to supporting them in this new position."
