Dragon fruit farming catching fancy among Prayagraj region farmers
Prayagraj: With the state govt making continuous efforts to increase income of farmers apart from traditional farming and promoting the production of commercial crops, dragon fruit cultivation has attracted farmers in the Prayagraj region. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Changes in climate and low rainfall have forced farmers towards dragon fruit cultivation as growing traditional crops based on irrigation was turning into a loss-making deal for farmers. A section of progressive farmers have opted for dragon fruit cultivation to increase their income with less water and less cost. Chhote Lal Gautam, a farmer cultivating dragon fruit on around two acres in Sarangapur village of the district, says, "Due to weak monsoons for the last couple of years, there was a constant crisis of irrigation. As a result, the income from traditional crops declined. After acknowledging the facts, I moved to cultivate dragon fruit in my fields and managed to increase my income significantly." The state govt has selected 18 districts across the state under the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Growth and Rural Enterprise Ecosystem Strengthening Project (UP-AGREES), which includes Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh districts of the Prayagraj division. Farmers in these districts are fast adopting dragon fruit cultivation. Deputy Director (Horticulture) Krishna Mohan Chaudhary says, "Currently, 16 progressive farmers are cultivating dragon fruit in Kaushambi and Prayagraj districts. Prayagraj division has the highest number of farmers cultivating dragon fruits." Dragon fruit farming was first launched by young farmer Ravindra Pandey in 2016 in the Kaushambi district of the division. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ravindra Pandey says that dragon fruit nurseries are also being prepared and sent from here to other districts of the state, which has increased his income apart from the crop. The fruit is a tropical fruit that got the name dragon fruit because of its bright magenta-coloured spikes. This miraculous fruit, which entered India from Mexico and the US, is called Pitaya in some places and Kamalam in others. Dragon fruit, with a mildly sweet and crunchy taste, has been called a superfood. It is proving to be a boon in the prevention of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. The state govt is providing financial assistance to farmers through Integrated Horticulture Development Mission to promote dragon fruit farming. Chaudhary, meanwhile, said that farmers are being given a 40% subsidy in form of financial assistance. Apart from this, a state grant of Rs 30,000 per hectare is also being given. Dragon fruit grower CL Gautam says that he received financial assistance of Rs 2.78 lakh per hectare from the govt. This has increased the interest of farmers in dragon fruit farming.

Capgemini to acquire WNS for $3.3 bn in major BPM industry deal
In a landmark development in the IT services and business process management (BPM) space, French multinational Capgemini announced its acquisition of Mumbai-based WNS for $3.3 billion (over Rs 28,000 crore) in an all-cash transaction. The deal, priced at $76.50 per WNS share, offers a 28 per cent premium over the last 90-day average, 27 per cent over the 30-day average, and 17 per cent over the closing price as of July 3, 2025. The transaction, unanimously approved by the boards of both companies, is expected to be accretive to Capgemini's normalized earnings per share by 4 per cent before synergies in 2026 and 7 per cent post-synergies in 2027. Subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals, as well as a green light from the Royal Court of Jersey, the deal is slated to close by year-end through a court-sanctioned scheme of arrangement. WNS, a global BPM player, operates across three key headquarters—in Mumbai (global HQ), New York (North America HQ), and London (UK and EMEA HQ)—and has a strong presence in India with 25 delivery centres employing nearly 39,700 people. The company serves clients across diverse industries, delivering digital-led transformation solutions through highly automated platforms. Shares of WNS (Holdings) soared by over 14 per cent on the New York Stock Exchange in the morning session on Monday. Institutional investors hold around 90 per cent stake in WNS. The acquisition will expand Capgemini's capabilities in Digital BPS and Intelligent Operations. With investments in AI and strategic partnerships with Microsoft, Google, AWS, Mistral AI, and NVIDIA, Capgemini reported over euro 900 million in Gen AI bookings in 2024. The combined entity would have generated euro 23.3 billion in revenue with a 13.6 per cent operating margin in 2024, including euro 1.9 billion in Digital BPS revenue. Capgemini CEO Aiman Ezzat said the acquisition positions the group to lead in Intelligent Operations, blending consulting, technology, platforms, and deep industry expertise. WNS CEO Keshav R. Murugesh echoed the sentiment, noting the shift from automation to autonomy as clients seek to embed AI into their operating models. To finance the deal, Capgemini has secured bridge financing of euro 4 billion, covering the purchase price, WNS's gross debt, and the redemption of a euro 0.8 billion bond due in June 2025. It plans to refinance the bridge through a mix of existing cash and new debt issuance. Both companies emphasized their cultural alignment and history of successful integrations, which they believe will ensure a smooth transition. The deal is set to create a global leader in Digital BPS, uniquely positioned to support enterprises in their transformation into AI-powered businesses. 'As a recognized leader in the Digital Business Process Services space, we see the next wave of transformation being driven by intelligent, domain-centric operations that unlock strategic value for our clients. Organizations that have already digitized are now seeking to reimagine their operating models by embedding AI at the core—shifting from automation to autonomy,' said Keshav R. Net losses of individual traders in F&O widen by 41% to Rs 1.06 lakh crore in FY25: SEBI study
Net losses incurred by individual traders widened by 41 per cent to Rs 1.06 lakh crore in FY25 compared to net losses of Rs 74,812 crore in FY24, according to a study by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). The percentage of traders making losses in the equity derivatives segment (EDS) remained broadly unchanged at 91 per cent from an earlier study undertaken in FY24, it showed. The findings are based on a Sebi study carried on profits and losses made by individual traders in EDS for FY24-25. The study included top 13 stock brokers in EDS (combined client base of around 96 lakh unique traders in EDS as against around 107 lakh unique traders across market). 'The study indicates that the net losses of individual traders widened by 41 per cent to Rs 1,05,603 crore in FY25 from Rs 74,812 crore in FY24 (after accounting for transaction costs),' the study showed. The regulator also examined a quarterly trend in participation and profit/loss outcome of individual traders during FY 2024-25. The number of unique individual traders in EDS declined from around 61.4 lakh in Q1 of FY25 to around 42.7 lakh in Q4 of FY25. This fall comes after Sebi, in November last year, announced a slew of six measures to strengthen the EDS framework. The derivatives measures were rolled out from November 20, 2024 onwards. During the first three quarters of FY25, the aggregate net loss across the individual traders and the average net loss per person were rising. 'However, it is seen that in Q4 FY25, there is a reduction in losses of individual traders – both at aggregate as well as per person level,' the study showed. At aggregate level, however, the quantum of loss as well as percentage of loss makers is at a level higher than that observed in Q1 of FY25. The regulator carried out a study on the trading activity in EDS vis-à-vis the cash market for the period December 2024 to May 2025. The findings showed that following the introduction of Sebi measures in the F&O segment last year, the index options turnover declined by 9 per cent in premium terms on a year-on-year basis in the period. In notional terms, the turnover in index options was down by 29 per cent during the same period. The study showed that compared to two years ago, index options volume is up by 14 per cent (in premium terms) and 42 per cent (in notional terms). 'Number of unique individual investors trading in EDS down by 20 per cent compared to previous year and up by 24 per cent from two years ago,' as per the study. According to the Sebi'S study the turnover of individuals in premium terms in EDS was down by 11 per cent year-on-year and up by 36 per cent over a similar period two years ago. India continues to see a relatively very high level of trading in EDS, compared to other markets, particularly in index options, it said.
