DMK should ignore opposition to separate law against honour-based crimes from caste outfits: Thirumavalavan
Mr Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with CPI and CPI (M) state secretaries, R. Mutharasan and P. Shanmugam, on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observed a day's fast led by its SC wing leader, M.P. Ranjan Kumar, inside the Sathyamurthy Bhavan.
Mr. Thirumavalavan pointed out the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which legalised self-respect marriages, and the implementation of Mandal Commission's recommendations, providing 27% to backward classes in government jobs and in education, also faced stiff opposition from upper castes and dominant castes.
'These were accepted by the larger society over time. The separate law is not a law in favour of scheduled castes. Honour-based crimes are national phenomena – such crimes are happening across communities and States and even within SCs and OBCs. Even recently, an OBC boy attacked another OBC boy for speaking to a girl from his own caste. It is a law against regressiveness and backwardness. CM Stalin should ignore the opposition of caste outfits as the democratic forces within these communities would welcome it,' he told The Hindu.
He explained to Mr Stalin about the need for a separate law to tackle such crimes and give it a special focus just as we have separate laws for crimes against women, Scheduled Castes and so on.
'We have given him several references that reiterate why such a law is needed as recommended by National Commission of Women, Law Commission of India, Supreme Court's directives in Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case and bills introduced as private member bills in Parliament and also a Bill introduced by CPI-M MLA A. Soundarrajan in 2015 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Even Rajasthan has introduced a separate law against it. We take pride in calling Tamil Nadu a land of social justice and Periyar...and we talk about Dravidian model. He listened to us patiently. He didn't give us any assurance but we hope CM Stalin would enact a separate law. It is needed today,' he said.

Maratha quota demand: Jarange to start fresh agitation from Mumbai on Aug 29
Last Updated: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Aug 7 (PTI) Activist Manoj Jarange has said he will launch a fresh agitation on August 29 in Mumbai to press for his demand of reservation for the Maratha community. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jarange said he along with other members of the Maratha community will leave from his Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, located around 400 km from Mumbai, on August 27. The activist has undertaken multiple hunger strikes demanding the recognition of all Marathas as Kunbis — an agrarian caste listed under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category — and reservation for the politically dominant community in government jobs and education. He has consistently called for the implementation of historical records, including the Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad gazettes, which he claims document the classification of the Maratha community as Kunbis. 'We will leave for Mumbai at 10 am on August 27 from Antarwali Sarati. We will make our first halt near Shivneri Fort in Junnar area of Pune district. We will go to Shivneri from Antarwali via Shevgaon, Ahilyanagar and Alephata and avoid the Malshej Ghat due to the monsoon," Jarange said. The next day, he will go to Chakan. From there, the agitators will head to south Mumbai via Talegaon, Lonawala, Vashi and Chembur, the activist said. 'The agitation will start on August 29 at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai," he added. Jarange has appealed to people from the Maratha community to join his agitation in Mumbai. He has also said leaders from the Maratha community who do not participate in the agitation should be defeated in elections. The Maharashtra legislature last year passed a bill providing 10 per cent reservation to the Maratha community under a separate category. But Jarange has been insisting on the quota for the community under the OBC category. The activist has claimed that more than 58 lakh documents have been collected to prove that Kunbis and Marathas are the same, and demanded the release of Kunbi certificates based on these records. Supreme Court directs states to act on orphans missing out on free schooling rights
The Supreme Court has instructed all states to conduct a comprehensive survey to identify orphaned children who have been deprived of their right to education under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009.A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and K V Viswanathan issued the directive while hearing a public interest plea concerning the welfare and educational rights of orphans across the country. The Court also asked the Centre to consider including data on orphans in the upcoming 2027 national gaps in existing welfare policies, the petitioner argued that both central and state government schemes for orphaned children fall short of addressing their educational and social needs. The Court echoed the concern, noting that there is currently no official nationwide record of orphaned children, a void that hampers effective policymaking. In its order, the bench directed all states to carry out a two-part survey: one, to record orphaned children who have already been admitted under provisions of the RTE Act, and two, to identify those who have been denied this right, along with the reasons behind it. The states have been given four weeks to file their respective bench further urged that, while data collection is underway, authorities must make parallel efforts to ensure that eligible orphaned children are immediately enrolled in nearby also took note that certain states, including Gujarat, Delhi, Meghalaya, and Sikkim, have already amended policies to include orphaned children within the 25 percent reservation quota for economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups under Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act. MK Stalin Urges S Jaishankar For Intervention As Sri Lanka Arrests Tamil Nadu Fishermen
Chennai: In a strongly worded letter, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has urged External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to take immediate diplomatic action to secure the release of 14 Indian fishermen apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy on August 6 for allegedly trespassing into Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen, along with their mechanised fishing vessel and a country boat, were intercepted in the early hours and taken into custody. Mr Stalin pointed out that this marks the 17th such arrest incident in 2025, bringing the total to 80 fishermen and 237 boats currently held by Sri Lankan authorities. "Despite repeated appeals, these arrests continue unchecked. Our fishermen are losing their livelihood and freedom in traditional waters. Urgent diplomatic intervention is required," Mr Stalin wrote. This renewed appeal follows Mr Stalin's earlier public demand urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to personally intervene over the demand to retrieve Katchatheevu island India had gifted to Sri Lanka in the 70s. He had said "Only a direct intervention by the Prime Minister can bring a lasting solution for Tamil fishermen," taking aim at what he described as the BJP-led Centre's inaction and politicization of the issue. Katchatheevu, a small island ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974, remains a flashpoint in Tamil Nadu politics. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution in April 2024 demanding that the Centre retrieve Katchatheevu to protect fishermen's rights. While Indian fishermen sail into Lankan waters deliberately or accidentally, retrieval of Katchatheevu island would give them that much extra space to fish. However, many argue, traditionally, fishermen from both sides fished in Lankan and Indian waters for ages and now they point out there is little fish in Indian waters, forcing them to trespass. In this context they want India to enter into a long-term lease agreement with Sri Lanka so Indian fishermen could legally fish in Lankan waters. This issue that gets louder ahead of elections is also mired in political controversy with the BJP blaming the DMK ally Congress of ceding the island to Lanka when DMK was in power in the state in the 70s and the DMK blaming the BJP at the centre of not doing anything to undo it.
