Teenage boy arrested after death of 13-year-old girl in West Yorkshire
Officers were called to a flat on Sheepridge Road in Huddersfield on Monday night to reports that a girl was unresponsive. West Yorkshire police said the victim died in hospital and her death was being treated as 'unexplained' after a postmortem examination.
A 16-year-old boy from Huddersfield was arrested on suspicion of murder and rape and is in custody.
The suspect was also arrested on suspicion of another offence of rape relating to a 16-year-old girl from a separate incident elsewhere in the Kirklees district, the force said on Thursday.
DCI Stacey Atkinson said: 'A postmortem was not able to determine how she died, and we continue to treat her death as unexplained at this time, pending more inquiries.
'Those inquiries are complex and are likely to be lengthy as we work to fully understand the circumstances of the girl's death.'
West Yorkshire police said: 'Police were called by the ambulance service to an address on Sheepridge Road, Huddersfield at 11.36pm on Monday 11 August to a report that the teenage girl was unresponsive.
'The 13-year-old was taken to hospital where she sadly died in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A 16-year-old boy, from Huddersfield, was arrested on suspicion of murder and rape, remains in police custody.
'A postmortem examination was conducted [on Wednesday] which concluded the girl's death was unexplained pending further investigation.'

Chadwell Heath: Three arrested after death of woman in east London
Police investigating the death of a woman in east London have arrested three men. A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while two men, aged 21 and 22, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, the Metropolitan Police said on Sunday. Detectives opened a murder investigation after the death of the woman in Chadwell Heath early on Saturday morning. Police and the London Ambulance Service were called to reports that a woman had been assaulted in Chadwell Heath Lane at around 5.30am. "Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene," the force said in a statement. She has not been formally identified, but officers believe the victim was in her 20s. The Metropolitan Police said their early enquiries suggested it was an isolated incident in which those involved knew each other. The woman's family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained family liaison officers. A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course. Appealing for the public's help, Detective Superintendent Brian Hobbs said: "Our thoughts remain with the victim's family and friends in light of this truly tragic event. "Although we have now made arrests, local residents will continue to see an increased number of officers in and around the area while our investigative work is carried out."

Serbia hit by anti-government riots after railway collapse
The offices of Serbia 's ruling party have been set on fire during a fifth night of unrest between anti-government protesters and riot police. More than 130 police officers have been injured and 18 people arrested as authorities struggle to regain control, with incidents in Belgrade, Valjevo and Novi Sad. Police in the city of Valjevo, western Serbia, were accused of using stun grenades and tear gas after a small group of masked protesters attacked the empty offices of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). Serbia's interior ministry denied allegations of violence and police brutality in Belgrade, the country's capital, and Novi Sad, which lies to the north east. The unrest was caused by the collapse of a railway station in Novi Sad in November, which killed 16 people. Protesters claimed the station's renovators had been allowed to cut corners. The investigation into the collapse is still ongoing, but a dozen officials, including a government minister, are facing charges. The student-led anti-corruption demonstrations had been largely peaceful until Wednesday, when pro-government supporters launched counter-protests. On Saturday, riot police were deployed across a number of cities, including Belgrade. Russia, a key Serbia ally, has expressed its support for Aleksandar Vucic, the country's pro-Kremlin president who leads the SNS. Mr Vucic on Sunday vowed a 'strong' response to the anti-government protesters, who he compared to 'terrorists'. 'You will see the full determination of the Serbian state. We will use everything at our disposal to restore law, peace and order,' he said. As well as attacking the offices of the SNS, protesters smashed the windows of the Serbian Radical Party, a coalition partner. Footage showed fireworks being launched at the front of the offices, causing fires. Injuries have been reported at protests across the country, with online footage purporting to show one man being beaten by police in Valjevo. Ivica Dacic, Serbia's interior minister, said: 'There will be more detentions. All those who have broken the law will be arrested.' Mr Vucic's government, despite courting EU membership and receiving billions of euros in aid from Brussels, has remained close with Moscow, backing its war in Ukraine. The Serbian president is also on good terms with Donald Trump, whose son-in-law Jared Kushner is planning to build a hotel in Belgrade. He said the protest movement had been infiltrated by foreign agents to 'destroy Serbia' and vowed to crack down on demonstrations. Russia 's foreign ministry on Friday said it may offer further support to Mr Vucic, describing the protests as 'violent riots'. 'Russia cannot remain unresponsive to what is happening in brotherly Serbia,' it said. Heartbroken family pay tribute to 'beautiful' girl, 13, at centre of rape and murder investigation after she was found dead
The heartbroken family of a 13-year-old girl whose alleged rape and murder is being investigated by homicide detectives have paid a moving tribute to their 'beautiful princess'. Casey-Louise has been named by relatives online as the tragic teenager whose lifeless body was discovered at a flat in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, on Monday August 11. She was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of the following day. Detectives immediately launched an murder inquiry and earlier this week a 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with her death. He has since been released on conditional bail. Casey-Louise, who was originally from Manchester, was in local authority care when she died. She had been living in Liverpool and had been visiting Huddersfield at the time. In a tribute online, one relative wrote: 'Suddenly and totally unexpected, on Tuesday 12th August our beautiful Casey-Louise gained her angel winds. 'Our family is absolutely devastated by this news. Can you please respect our privacy and give us time to grieve as a family.' The youngster was a pupil at Mossley Hollins High School, in Manchester. Casey-Louise was found unresponsive at the flat, in Sheepridge Road, by emergency services just after 11.30pm. A post-mortem was inconclusive and her death is being treated as unexplained. Detectives arrested the boy on suspicion of Casey-Louise's rape and murder, and on suspicion of the rape of another 16-year-old girl elsewhere in nearby Kirklees. In a tribute on Facebook, one close family member wrote: 'Goodnight princess. I love you and miss you lots.' Another shared: 'Didn't think I'd be writing this so soon, I love you forever my girl. I'll forever miss you.' While one relative posted: 'Angry doesn't even cut it. Hope we get the justice our family deserves. Rest in peace little girl, Casey-Louise forever 13.' Friend Tina Cooper also set up an online fundraiser for donations towards the youngster's funeral. She said: 'Casey was a vibrant happy 13-year-old with all her life ahead of her. 'Our hearts go out to Casey's family. No one should have to bury their child. Let's help her family send their daughter on her final journey with dignity.' Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, previously said: 'A post mortem was not able to determine how she died, and we continue to treat her death as unexplained at this time, pending more enquiries. The news of Casey-Louise's death has sent shockwaves through the town.
