Lakhpati Didi Yojana: A strategy for inclusive, sustainable development
Bhubaneswar, May 29 (UNI) The Lakhpati Didi Yojana is not merely a welfare scheme but a comprehensive strategy for inclusive and sustainable development, said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
Speaking at the National Lakhpati Didi Conclave 2025, which brought together participants from 25 states and union territories, Majhi highlighted that the primary objective of the initiative is to empower women financially and foster leadership among rural women.
Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said, the Lakhpati Didi Yojana has enabled women to earn more than Rs.1 lakh per annum.
"This is not just about employment," he stated. "Its core aim is to ensure financial independence for women and nurture leadership qualities among them."
Majhi emphasized that the conclave was not merely a celebration of achievements but a reaffirmation of the government's commitment to women's leadership.
"The strength and initiative of women lay the foundation for a strong family and a stronger nation," he added.
Highlighting recent legislative progress, the Chief Minister noted that the Nari Shakti Vandan Act was passed in Parliament, ensuring that at least 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies will be reserved for women in the upcoming elections.
Majhi proudly announced that Odisha has led the way in implementing the Lakhpati Didi Mission, with nearly 17 lakh women achieving the status of Lakhpati Didi, making the state number one in the country.
He attributed this success to the dedication of self-help group (SHG) women, the Mission Shakti initiative, the Odisha Livelihood Mission, and effective grassroots execution.
The Chief Minister further shared that women's self-help groups in Odisha are now eligible for interest-free loans up to Rs.10 lakh. The revolving fund support has been increased from Rs.15,000 to Rs.30,000, while the Community Investment Fund has risen from Rs.35 lakh to Rs.60 lakh.
'These efforts are helping SHG members grow their businesses and livelihoods with confidence,' he said, adding that platforms like the Subhadra Shakti Mela provide opportunities for women to build their own identities and conduct business worth lakhs of rupees.
"We are committed to promoting women in entrepreneurship and leadership. The goal is to make Lakhpati Didi not just a livelihood program but a movement for women's dignity, self-reliance, and leadership," he said.
On the occasion, Lakhpati Didis such as Vindhyabashini from Rayagada district and Shobha Digambara Kadam from Maharashtra shared their success stories and experiences.
The Chief Minister honored Shakuntala Dhal (Deogarh district), Sulami Dalabehera (Gajapati district), and Mamata Nath Sharma (Kendrapara district) as the best Lakhpati Didis. Nayagarh district received accolades for achieving 98% success in creating Lakhpati Didis, followed closely by Kendrapara, Cuttack, Bhadrak, and Jagatsinghpur districts, each achieving 97%.
Devi Prasad Nayak from the Odisha Livelihood Mission, Bhubaneswar, was recognized as the best officer at the state level.
During the event, the Chief Minister also released a video, a coffee table book, and a booklet highlighting the impact of the Lakhpati Didi initiative.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Women and Child Development, Parvati Parida, in her address, said the Lakhpati Didi Yojana is bringing women out of the confines of their homes and connecting them to mainstream development.
She noted that rural women are excelling in various fields such as agriculture, animal husbandry, tailoring, and running cafes, becoming inspiring examples for others.

The previous all-time high for silver was Rs 1,03,500 per kg, recorded on March 19. Gold also saw firm upward movement. The price of gold of 99.9% purity rose Rs 430 to Rs 99,690 per 10 grams, while gold of 99.5% purity gained Rs 400 to Rs 99,100 per 10 grams, both inclusive of all taxes. Silver futures for July delivery rallied by Rs 3,833, or 3.78%, to touch a lifetime high of Rs 1,05,213 per kg on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). Looking ahead, Rahul Kalantri, Vice President (Commodities) at Mehta Equities, said the metal could climb further. 'The metal might reach around Rs 1,14,000 to Rs 1,20,000 per kg by this Diwali, but investors should brace for a bumpy ride ahead as market volatility remains high amid global uncertainties,' he said. Gold futures for the August contract also gained Rs 635 to reach Rs 99,214 per 10 grams. 'Gold prices traded higher, supported by a weaker dollar and renewed safe-haven demand amid lingering tariff uncertainty and US debt concerns,' said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities. 'Spot silver has surpassed the previous resistance level of $35 per ounce and is trading above that mark, reaching a 12-year high,' added Gandhi. Samruddhi Mahamarg opens fully, cuts down travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur by 9 hours
The Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is now open end to end after the 76-kilometre leg between Igatpuri and Amane (Thane) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, providing a seamless 701-kilometre connectivity from Mumbai to Nagpur. The six-lane expressway that is now fully operational will reduce the travel time between the two cities by half from 17 hours to around eight hours. The event organised at Igatpuri was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other ministers of the Mahayuti government. The completion of the last leg brings the entire project to realisation after decades of intricate engineering issues, political will and huge investments. The project was initially estimated at Rs 55,500 crore, but as it crossed various technical and logistical barriers and the project cost rose to over Rs 61,000 crore. At the inauguration, Fadnavis, who initially conceptualised the project in his first tenure as a CM, said, 'This is not merely a road, it is a corridor of Maharashtra's economy. It directly connects 24 districts with JNPT and paves the way for growth, transportation, logistics and opportunities in agriculture, tourism and industrial development.' The final stretch of the corridor passing through Nashik and Thane districts had some of the most challenging construction tasks. The 76-kilometre section comprises five twin tunnels of 10.73 kilometres in length, including the broadest tunnel in the country near Igatpuri that is 8 km long and 17.61 metres wide. It also has India's first fire-fighting system in a tunnel. As many as 17 viaducts with an aggregate length of more than 10.56 kilometers had to be built in hilly and forested territory. 'Because of a thick forest block, absence of access roads, hilly terrain and high rainfall in Igatpuri, we had to work with utmost caution. Nevertheless, we adopted the best safety measures to facilitate a safe working environment,' said K Mallikharjuna Rao, Business Unit Head, Hydro and Underground, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who were a part of construction of the twin tunnels. This section also has interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane. More than 60 low and high voltage power lines had to be shifted for the construction along with the new rail overbridge. The road now provides a safer route to the scary Kasara Ghat and shortens the journey time from Igatpuri to Kasara to eight minutes. The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a greenfield expressway designed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that passes through 392 villages in 26 talukas in 10 districts. It directly links Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Nashik and Thane and indirectly serves many others such as Chandrapur, Nanded, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad. The highest speed limit is fixed at 120 kmph on flat terrain and 100 kmph in ghat sections. Shinde said, 'We initiated the project in our term and completed it in our term only. This access control road will prove to be a game changer in economic activity between Mumbai and Vidarbha. Earlier, the farmer who used to travel for three days to come to Mumbai with farm produce now is able to reach the same day.' Besides its huge size, the expressway has been built focusing on conservation and intelligent engineering, according to MSRDC officials. For the conservation of wildlife, 92 overpasses and eight underpasses have been constructed for the safe passage of animals. Over 3.3 million trees have been transplanted with native species and 1,000 farm ponds have been created along the road to support agriculture in the regions. Fadnavis also highlighted advanced features such as temperature sensitive fire fighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems and well designed interchanges. 'The fire fighting system and temperature sensitive surfaces are designed such that they get activated when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius and self-deactivates when the temperature goes below 30 degrees Celsius,' he said. The expressway will also facilitate the transportation of goods between MIHAN in Nagpur and JNPT in Mumbai with faster and more reliable cargo movement. In future, there are proposals for 200 MW of solar power generation along the route, with 22 facility centres being planned to benefit travellers. A gas pipeline from Konkan to Nagpur through this corridor is also planned that will ensure constant fuel supply to industries along this route. After Samruddhi Mahamarg, the government is now set to apply the model of access controlled expressways to other proposed corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune expressway missing link and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, thereby increasing the network of expressways across the state. 'We are constructing an access control grid so that one is able to reach any corner of the state to other within 8 to 10 hours only,' Shinde added. In his address, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, 'When the project started, everyone opposed it, some even organised protests… The estimated amount was Rs 55,500 crore, but owing to factors, it has crossed Rs 61,000 crore now. But the magnitude of this achievement for the state is huge.'

Covid-19 delayed Census 2021; southern states' concerns will be take care of: MHA
New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) Attributing the delay in conducting Census 2021 to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday said the concerns of the southern states regarding the delimitation process will be taken care of with all concerned at an appropriate time. The Ministry said on X that Home Minister Amit Shah had repeatedly clarified that concerns of southern states regarding the delimitation exercise will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time. "Census 2021 was to be conducted and all preparations for the Census were completed. However, due to outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the country, the Census work was postponed. The aftershock of Covid-19 continued for quite some time," the MHA said. The Ministry said that a key challenge was the involvement of approximately 30 lakh enumerators, most of whom are primary school teachers. Conducting the Census immediately after Covid could have severely disrupted primary education. "COVID disrupted all sectors, including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for the Census. Enumerators, who are primary school teachers, are key persons for conducting Census. Conducting the Census after Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely," the MHA post said. "Countries which conducted Census immediately after COVID-19 faced issues with the quality and coverage of Census data. The Government has decided to commence the process of census forthwith, which will be completed on March 1, 2027, the reference date for Census," it said. The Ministry reiterated that budgetary constraints have never been a hurdle for conducting the Census, as adequate funding is consistently ensured by the government. The MHA said, "Budget has never been a constraint for Census as fund is always ensured by the Govt. Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified on many occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at an appropriate time".
