RBI outlook to Parliament panel: Governor Sanjay Malhotra says economy strong; Rs 2,000 notes still legal but out of circulation

Time of India10-07-2025
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance on the state of the Indian economy, assuring lawmakers that the country was performing well despite global headwinds.
According to panel Chairman and BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, 'He gave us a wide range of information related to the economic situation and the financial system of our country. Members also had questions, and I believe most of them were quite convincing.'
During the meeting, several members sought clarity on the status of Rs 2,000 currency notes. In response, the RBI Governor stated that the notes are no longer in circulation but continue to remain legal tender, ANI reported.
The RBI has not declared them invalid yet, sources present at the meeting said.
The issue of counterfeit notes also came up. A member pointed out that around 1.12 lakh fake Rs 500 notes were seized recently, which is a very small proportion of the total six crore notes in circulation.
The governor acknowledged the concern and said that both the RBI and the government were 'fully committed to preventing such activities and are consistently taking measures' to curb the circulation of counterfeit currency.

The panel also discussed cryptocurrency regulations. While specific details of the RBI's response were not disclosed, multiple MPs reportedly raised questions on the matter.
The next meeting with the RBI Governor is likely to be scheduled for July 23 or 24 and will focus on the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Mahtab added.

Bank fraud case: Court orders auction of sports academy, land of ex-MLA

A special anti-money laundering court has ordered the auction of properties linked to former MLA Vivekanand Shankar Patil to facilitate repayment to creditors of a cooperative bank based in Panvel in Maharashtra's Raigad district. The properties, comprising a multi-acre sports academy and a land parcel in Panvel, have been attached by probe agencies in an alleged fraud of over Rs 512 crore at the Karnala Nagari Sahakari (cooperative) Bank. Patil, the prime accused in the case, represented Panvel as a Peasants and Workers Party of India MLA for three terms and was a legislator from Uran once. A total of 87 properties, including some ancestral assets of Patil, were attached under the MPID Act, or the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act, by Navi Mumbai police's Economic Offences Wing. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is also probing a money laundering case linked to the fraud, has dual attachment to some of these properties. Special PMLA Judge Satyanarayan Navander on Tuesday ordered the release of these attached properties, allowing a plea by the bank's liquidator. The liquidator had sought release of Karnala Sports Academy and a plot of land, both located in Panvel taluka, to discharge the bank's liabilities to its creditors, including depositors. All the parties, including the accused, had given their no objection to proceed with the auction of these properties. Given the consensus among all parties, the court deemed it proper to make the attachment of these two properties absolute. It then directed the immediate commencement of the auction process in the interest of the bank's depositors. The ED case is based on an FIR registered against Patil and 75 others in February 2020 by the Economic Offences Wing, which had alleged irregularities of Rs 512.54 crore in the Panvel-headquartered Karnala co-operative bank.

Crude oil slips to $68; Emkay flags shift to clean energy, stable supply"

Brent crude prices have cooled to $68 a barrel after briefly breaching the $80 mark during the Israel-Iran conflict, as geopolitical tensions ease and global oil markets rebalance. According to Emkay Wealth Management, the retreat reflects the fading of a $10–15 risk premium, stabilizing OPEC+ supply moves, and a growing global shift toward cleaner energy sources. The brief but sharp rally in crude was largely driven by geopolitical risk premiums, which analysts at Emkay estimate ranged between $10–15 per barrel. With the absence of direct disruptions in key oil routes—particularly through the Hormuz Strait, a vital chokepoint for global oil supply—the tension-driven premium has largely unwound. OPEC+, the influential oil producers' bloc, has stepped in as a stabilizing force by easing supply curbs and promising to gradually ramp up production. Iraq, a key supplier to the U.S., continues to maintain uninterrupted oil exports, further supporting the global supply chain. These developments have collectively helped anchor oil prices in a range-bound zone, easing fears of runaway energy inflation that rattled global markets earlier this year. While supply-side pressures ease, the demand landscape is undergoing a structural shift. The report notes that the European Union's decarbonization agenda—with targets to push renewable and nuclear energy to 70% of its total mix over the next decade—is gaining serious traction. Supported by investments of over $300 billion, this energy transition could curb long-term crude demand, especially in advanced economies. This trend adds another layer of moderation to oil prices, as clean energy adoption intensifies across the globe. In the U.S., crude stockpiles rose by 3.8 million barrels as of June 25, bringing the total inventory to 419 million barrels. This build-up suggests that near-term demand may be softening, or supply outpacing consumption—both of which tend to cap price surges. What's Next for Oil Prices? According to Emkay's analysis, Brent crude is expected to trade within a technical ceiling of $70–$75 per barrel, barring any fresh geopolitical disruptions. With key variables—Middle East tensions, OPEC+ strategy, U.S. inventories, and green energy policy—all appearing stable or favorable, a new price equilibrium is likely taking shape. "Unless new shocks emerge, oil prices are likely to remain range-bound," the report notes. What this means for investors & consumers For Indian investors and consumers, this cooling in crude prices could have multiple positive ripple effects: Lower inflationary pressure, especially on fuel and transportation costs Stable input costs for oil-import-heavy industries (aviation, paints, chemicals) Improved trade balance and lower fiscal burden on fuel subsidies Equity market relief, particularly in sectors like FMCG, auto, and logistics For investors in energy-linked mutual funds or ETFs, cautious rebalancing may be wise, given the evolving price ceiling.
