BBC's Nick Robinson hacked, sparking warning for 1million people

Yahoo11-02-2025
BBC journalist Nick Robinson has revealed that his social media has been hacked to 'promote cryptocurrency'. The BBC Radio 4 Today programme presenter, 61, said he became locked out of his X account on Monday night and has been prevented from accessing it.
His co-host Amol Rajan was on the Today programme speaking about the chief executive officer of OpenAI, Sam Altman, saying no to selling his artificial intelligence (AI) company to Tesla Motors chief executive and X owner Elon Musk. Altman has also offered to buy X, formerly Twitter, for less than Musk paid for it.
Rajan said: 'Life comes at you fast and very digitally when you're a tech bro and meanwhile, also on Twitter/X, my very own tech bro, the mighty Nick Robinson, has finally succumbed to the temptations online, and I see overnight, is launching a cryptocurrency.

'This is the big news in Britain, and what listeners want to know Nick is, how do they invest?'
Robinson replied saying 'you're not the only one who discovered this last night', adding: 'I was woken up at about 11 o'clock to find that I had accidentally tweeted to a million people that I was indeed launching a new cryptocurrency called 'dollar today' on something called Solana, which you no doubt know about, but I thought was probably one of those drinks that you give to kids after they've been swimming.
'Yeah, I've been hacked on my Twitter account. So if you read that, it's complete nonsense, quite entertaining nonsense. Actually, it (the cryptocurrency) says that, it's more than a token, it's a way for our listeners to come together, celebrate innovation, and be part of something bigger. I'm still locked out of my account, so anything you read today, it won't be me, but there's a lesson learned.'
Rajan appeared to jokingly point out it might be due to Robinson 'having a bit of a go at Elon Musk'. Robinson replied: 'It was absolutely clear that Mr Musk's American supporters had taken a personal animus because I had been swamped by critical messages after I pointed out that what Mr Musk said on air, that the BBC takes money from USAID (United States Agency for International Development), an organisation he's dismantling, is simply not true.
'The BBC charity called BBC Media Action, which helps tackle disinformation around the world, does indeed take some money from other charitable sources and USAID. The BBC news organisation and the BBC overall does not. Anyway, there we are, that didn't make me very popular.'
Robinson, a former BBC political editor, is also a presenter on BBC Radio 4 show Political Thinking, and presents The Today Podcast with Rajan. Musk, who is leading the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), is trying to dismantle USAID, and compared it to a 'bowl of worms' during a recent interview.

White House moves on data echo emerging markets

Investors in emerging markets that have leaders who cast doubt on national economic data may have lessons for American traders, as President Trump continues to dispute official statistics. Why it matters: The U.S. is by no means an emerging market or dictatorship. But looking at how markets around the world perform under authoritarian leadership holds some important lessons for domestic investors. Catch up quick: Trump has made several recent moves. Fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pressured Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell to lower interest rates. Cut a deal to take a portion of revenue from two major American chip companies selling semiconductors to China. Called on Goldman Sachs to fire its head economist, after the institution predicted, alongside most of Wall Street, that tariffs would drive inflation and slow growth. Created a scorecard that rates companies and trade associations on how hard they worked to support and promote the "One Big Beautiful Bill," a senior White House official tells Axios' Mike Allen. State of play: "In emerging markets whenever we see the administration trying to dictate monetary policy it's almost always received extremely poorly," says Jason Hsu, founder of Rayliant Global Advisors, where he focuses on emerging markets. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index is up over 20% year-to-date compared with the 10% year-to-date gains of the S&P 500. Emerging markets with authoritarian leaders can still have strong stock market performance Fabio Natalucci, CEO of the Andersen Institute for Finance and Economics and a former deputy director of the International Monetary Fund, tells Axios. What matters are the specific policies of each leader, how they affect the independence of the central bank, and the integrity of economic data. Between the lines: Highly centralized leadership in emerging markets tends to come with a weak local currency, high inflation and slowing growth. In Turkey, the head of the central bank has been dismissed a number of times, which has led to a crash of the Turkish currency. In China, doubts over economic data have forced investors to rely on alternate sources, including shipping volumes and satellite images. Zoom in: The risk in this particular moment is that Fed independence is under pressure while the full potential impact of tariffs has not been felt yet, which could leave monetary policy "really behind the curve," Natalucci says. The U.S. is "thriving because it's an open economy. It's a rules-based economy," he adds. If the rules are rewritten, it could be a catalyst for investors to continue moving away from dollar-denominated assets. Yes, but: Not only is the U.S. not an emerging market, but American leadership still has the kind of credibility that emerging markets leaders often lack, Hsu notes. Trump has "a lot of willing believers," including market participants who felt economic data gathering needed reforms to make it more accurate. What we're watching:"The market will price (any) policy mistake," Natalucci says. The bond market has been relatively stable since April. But if the Fed were to cut rates amid hot inflation, bond investors could react negatively, pushing up yields and making debt more expensive. And that could put pressure on the administration, which has already proven that it reacts when the bond market panics. The White House responded to an Axios request for comment on these parallels via email. "There is no virtue in defending a broken status quo and upholding elite-approved America Last policies that have eroded our industrial base and decimated American communities," White House spokesman Kush Desai writes, pointing to efforts to lower inflation and strike trade deals.

3 Cryptos That Could Be About to Soar as Stablecoin Adoption Grows

Key Points Ethereum's size means it's a gravity well for new stablecoin issuance. Solana's speed makes it the preferred place to operate applications using stablecoins. XRP's close ties to big capital make it an important stablecoin payment processor. 10 stocks we like better than Ethereum › As stablecoin issuers scale up, more dollars are living on public blockchains, and that extra liquidity tends to flow into the ecosystems best equipped to put it to work. And, given that the value of the stablecoin market just set fresh highs, with total supply around $270 billion and up roughly 5% in the last month, there's no time like the present for the best-positioned chains to be capturing billions of inflows. In my view, the biggest beneficiaries of the growth in stablecoin value are likely to be Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP), and more or less in that exact order. Here's how this could play out and why. With stablecoins, liquidity begets liquidity Stablecoins are tokens designed to track a fiat currency like the U.S. dollar while riding on public blockchains. They have become one of crypto's transaction settlement layers for everything from trading to payroll, and they're also a store of value that's quickly becoming second only to Bitcoin within the crypto sector. The supply of stablecoins is expanding briskly. Tether says that circulating USDT, its stablecoin, now exceeds $162 billion, with its reserves anchored in U.S. Treasury bills. Circle shows roughly $64 billion USDC outstanding as of early August. But where is that liquidity landing right now? Ethereum hosts the deepest stablecoin base at roughly $137 billion, built from its long-running dominance in the decentralized finance (DeFi) segment. Solana has grown into the clear No. 3 chain for stablecoins, at about $11 billion, with USDC constituting the majority. The second-order effect here is simple. More on-chain dollars mean more investor confidence in the chain's features. This creates more potential demand for blockspace, more staking fees for the chain's validators, and, eventually, more actual activity on the chain that compounds into token value over time. That sets the stage for Ethereum, XRP, and Solana to grow significantly, each for different reasons. How these coins will ride the stablecoin wave Ethereum is the liquidity workhorse with the biggest ecosystem. It already hosts most tokenized fund experiments from major asset managers. In other words, Ethereum tends to convert stablecoin deposits into real investment activity quickly, so there's a tailwind for it whenever issuance expands, like now. Assuming stablecoin supply keeps climbing and regulators keep green-lighting new asset issuers and funds, Ethereum's share of that activity should remain significant, even with growing competition. It's not guaranteed, but the base case here favors its continued leadership. Solana's appeal is in its speed and its transaction costs, which are lower than Ethereum's. Those features make stablecoin-based payments, applications, and consumer experiences feel very smooth for users, and, over the long run, it will likely continue to capture some of Ethereum's value share. For Solana, the thesis is thus that more payment- and app-driven stablecoin transaction volume compounds into more usage and DeFi application fees on its network. In contrast to the above two coins, XRP's roadmap has always tilted toward catering to the needs of banks, fintechs, and cross-border payment processors. Thanks to the development activities of XRP's issuer, Ripple, the ledger now has a native automated market maker (AMM) and long-standing built-in compliance controls like authorized trust lines and issuer freezes that financial institutions value in stablecoins. The recent launch of Ripple's own dollar stablecoin thus adds a native settlement asset aligned with that strategy. Its coin has already crossed $640 million in circulation, and Ripple is layering in payments integrations and acquisitions of stablecoin platforms to accelerate adoption. The bet for XRP holders is that enterprise-grade stablecoin rails on the chain will pull in more payment volume over time. So, Ripple's strategy here is closer to Solana's than to Ethereum's, and it has the benefit of good relations with the institutional capital that will ultimately hold the stablecoins it wants to attract to its chain. All three of these coins are worth buying, both due to their chances of accumulating stablecoin value, and due to the underlying value of their technology platforms and ecosystems. Assuming that stablecoins keep becoming a more important piece of financial infrastructure, the ceiling on the potential upside of an investment in any of them could keep rising.
